Is that typical? I downloaded the app to follow some on the ground Ukraine stuff, and all I've done so far was download the app and choose some interests -- tech, gaming, art, & funny -- and it was immediate horn dog shit with some woman in a red dress who has just the right shade of underwear on to make it look like she's not wearing any. A swipe up goes to a cat video, and another swipe to some cooking, and then three more thirst traps.

I even reset the app data and chose my selections again, and then I'm hit with Amouranth, among some other similar content. I don't even have an account yet! Now, I don't have any gripes about half naked people in my feed, but at least make me work for it. Especially for a platform that's supposedly aimed at teenagers.

The first few hours of TikTok are just horrible.

BUT I must say that their algorithm is pretty damn good after a few uses. It really pin points what you actually like and is pretty good at making you discover things you will probably like. For all the shit TikTok gets (and deserved most of the time), after a while is quite good to use and one of the best tailored apps I've seen.

But yeah, the first hours I had some really fucking weird videos.

If you watch the videos, they're gonna serve you more and more of them.

If you don't like them, quickly swipe to the next video. A few times of doing this and you'll see far fewer of those videos.

I only downloaded it because my boyfriend uses it and sometimes sends me videos, and at one point it stopped allowing me to view videos without the app.

When he sends me a video and i try to press the back button to leave tiktok it loads another video instead which is really annoying.

Since I don't actually use it myself and don't have any preferences of videos I watch, thirst traps of women in very little underwear is the video that loads about 95% of the time, along with gross pimple popping videos and shit

You'll get that with a fresh account because it's serving you what's popular and guess what.
After a while if you're not showing interest it will shift towards things more tailored for you, but it needs time to learn what you like. And you watching that video 14 times to figure out if she does wear underwear is not helping!

But you would think that if I chose "funny", you would throw some funny shit at me! The closest thing I got to funny was some dude playing kancho with hit hot girlfriend in yoga pants and mini-skirts, so that was more thirst trapping than funny.

there's a lot of thirst
I can only imagine how crazy this would be if they allowed straight up porn like Twitter.

But I was getting it for a somewhat informative cause!

If you watch the videos, they're gonna serve you more and more of them.

If you don't like them, quickly swipe to the next video. A few times of doing this and you'll see far fewer of those videos.
But the problem with thirst traps is that they're traps, so they already caught me lol.

Hopefully they're quick to algorithm away so I can get to what I intended to sign up for while also not eliminating them entirely because I'm a bad person.

To be fair, it only took one video for me to know she was wearing underwear given I'm sure she'd have been banned if she wasn't.

The problem was that they tossed literally five of her videos in the starter feed and they all began with her jumping on the bed in the same outfit in the same upskirt prone pose.

You probably spent a millisecond longer watching those than the other ones. It's pretty uncanny, my gay friend only gets twink thirst traps, through no real effort of himself, or so he says.
But you can long press a video and say you're not interested, or train yourself to immediately swipe away a thirst trap, and pretty quickly you'll get other things you might like more. I only get joke videos and thirst traps. I'm fine with those.

Yeah, pretty normal, make sure to hold the screen and pick "not interested". Once you create your own interest bubble the app is pretty great.

So the problem isn't that it's giving you content you don't want, but that you're being given content you do want but are embarrassed by?

Train the algorithm baby, it's your only bet. Although no matter how hard I try, Tik Tok won't giving stop giving me "when you're Filipino..." content when I'm not. Like not even close lol

More like I'm surprised that I chose completely unrelated topics of interest and I'm being tossed some stuff without seeking it out since it's not within the realm of interests I chose. It's nothing embarassing to me, just weird and ridiculously blatant.

Had TikTok for like a month before I had to delete it.

The algorithm quickly gets used to what will keep you in the app. I was actively despising the videos being pushed to me 80% of the time, but it's my own fault because they were videos I couldn't help but hate-watch.

The little head bobbing stuff annoyed me so much, but I probably lingered on those videos out of morbid curiosity and spite and it kept sending me them etc...

I mean yeah the app is just testing what you want. It doesn't just take your word for it, it experiments with what you might like. After a few days it'll be pretty specific.

It's smarter than your answers lol

While we're on the subject what is dictating the stuff twitter spams? I only follow one person that does cosplay and my feed is drowned in lewd cosplay all day. One was just straight up softcore porn. I'd rather not have to unfollow that one person because their suggests are broken.

The thing with TikTok is that the algorythm is too good for its own good.

Like 2 video's and you get 80 percent of the time exactly the same thing but from other people 20 times in your feed. I once liked a Warzone skit and it was always the "dude raging because he got shot in Warzone" or the "Girlfriend watches boyfriends play warzone" videos. That or the classic "THIS LOADOUT IS BROKEN" videos.

Like one funny video and you get a whole feed of people copying that funny video.

I've only ever checked it out once but in all honesty I was left wondering why the hell they haven't just made an 18+ version. Like clearly there's a massive audience for it there.

So not like instagram?
And Youtube shorts doesn't have traps, but I still get same stuff that I set to "not interested" a couple dozen times.

Yeah the first few times I used the clock app it was not that great. The algorithm did sort out quickly and start showing me some cool stuff, but I'm not really sure if the thirst stuff ever leaves because I sometimes seek that stuff out.

Stay with it and like the videos that you'd like to see more of. It'll take a couple of hours for the algorithm to get to know you.

I don't use TikTok but the same exact thing happened to me when I opened an Instagram late last year. I just wanted recipes and gaming stuff and it immediately gave me booties

It took me maybe two hours to go from thirst traps and bad Memes to nothing but anime reviews and manga recommendations. And now it's a happy place for me to go.

Whip the algorithm into shape by actively holding down your finger on unwanted Toks and selecting Not Interested. It's not enough to just skip what you don't want to see - the algorithm will actively think you want to see more of any Tok that fully finishes playing, regardless of whether you heart it.

Actively like what you like. Actively mark not interested for things you don't want. It's the only way to get it right.

It's like a rapid fire loud Reddit - there is good shit there and there is terrible shit there, but the algorithm does a good job of figuring out what you actually want to see after a few hours of using it.

I still get thirst traps, but it's one I've tailored the app to know I like. That's my own fault so I can't complain.
But yea overall the algorithm is super good and narrowing down your interests, just takes a bit of tuning. 90% of my feed has been Elden Ring footage the last few days.

I had to do some real magic stuff to get rid of the thirst traps. There's still one or two that still show up on my FYP binge but it's much, much better. It seems to have gotten worse recently.

I once wanted to show an older friend just how fun tiktok can be once you get over the initial onslaught. I did forget however that the initial thirst traps on my TikTok had been long replaced by very very very specific content that elicited a nervous giggle from my friend followed by a silence that has lasted to this day.

Moral: Never show your TikTok feed to anyone. Ever.

However, YouTube shorts have made me discover bad things about myself...

I like thirst traps and doom prep videos. 😞

Hearing people talk about Tik Tok and the 'algorithm' always reminds me of 'The Game' episode from Star Trek TNG.

I will not download this app!

It started out that way for me too, maybe that's just the default? Then I watched a cooking video for like a minute so now I get 90% cooking videos.

That's instagram for me. I hit the search icon and I'm greeted with a grid of images before even typing! And amongst images of some of my interests are these traps that I can't help but click. And then scrolling from that choice brings more of the same...
