The news this week that Warner Bros. and Amazon are now working on a The Lord of the Rings series came as a bit of a surprise, since it’d been widely assumed that Christopher Tolkien would never give anyone the rights again. It’s now come out that Tolkien, who has safeguarded the rights of his father J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, recently resigned as director of Tolkien Estate—signifying a major change on the horizon for adaptations of Tolkien’s work.

Well that makes sense. I suppose it was more likely an explanation than Amazon becoming master negotiators that reversed his stance on adaptations.

I don't follow this enough to know the significance.

I take it he wasn't happy with PJ's LoTR? If so, I take it this already was in the works before Amazon got the rights.

I wonder what this means for the future.

If Disney could buy the franchise they could make a Frozen X Middle-Earth X Star Wars Crossover... In the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Imagine this guys- Borormir returns from Ashgard, and he now works for Stark Industries, but he has a crush on black widow so he tricks some hobbits into making a new ring of power to give to black widow but she is dating hulk, so Boromir gets mad (again) and puts on the ring, and then he becomes the new sauron. Then loki, Olaf and the last clone troopers attack earth as a strong army, but not before they kill Tom Bombadill and steal the infinity stone he had hidden in his drawer.

This is of course all a fake flag attack. Boromir (new sauron) merely used Loki, Olaf and the last clone troopers as a distraction to get to black widow behind hulks back so he can say mean things about the hulk like he is natty and his pants don't fit, so black widow will leave him for him.

Good. Never liked him and other Tolkien fans who hold up the books as some perfect Sacred Cow. Maybe we'll finally get a Silmarillion adaptation.

Strike while the iron is hot. It's true you don't want to dilute the value of the "brand" but at the same time, 25 years could pass and they could find that nobody cares about stories about elves and dwarfs enough anymore to be interested in any kind of investments.

Reading the Silmarillion is like reading the Bible. It's not something you can really translate to a movie.
Maybe what they should do is to make every episode a stand alone story. Sort of like Black Mirror. You could have every episode showing a specific situation, aspect or character in the context that Tolkien wrote about. It could make it a lot more interesting.

An episode about Beren and Luthien for example.

I'd rather have this than to have Brian Herbert-esque fanfiction ruining the canon. Doubtful about the Silmarillion adaptation, but seeing as they are so many adaptations of biblical stories, maybe it could work.

Rather Universal get the Theme Park rights instead of Disney. They did a great job with Potter.

People have cared about stories of elves and dwarfs for hundreds of years. I find it very unlikely people won't continue to find common fantasy elements to be appealing in 25 years.

Wow, I was convinced this would never happen. Any info on who will take his position?

I'm a bit worried for future adaptations because any story preceeding the Hobbit would need some serious... embellishment. If it ends like Shadow Of Mordor, I'd rather pass.

I don't want Disney to snatch up the rights because I want Universal to make a LOTR land at their parks that has the same level of themeing and immersion as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Disney can piss off. I hope they don't get the rights to this as well

This might be bad news tbh. It's awesome that they will be more open with the license now but this also opens up the potential for plenty of terrible adaptations too. Man I think there's a likelihood that it can get worse than the hobbit trilogy

Why would Disney buy a series that has been a Warner Bros series for almost 20 years, and that they have wide swaths of merchandise, video games, and a large interest in maintaining control over?
