“I think it’s a certainty,” Cameron says of “Avatar” passing “Avengers: Endgame” at the box office. “But let’s give ‘Endgame’ their moment and let’s celebrate that people are going to the movie theater.”
“I don’t want to sound snarky after I took the high road [by offering congratulations],” Cameron says. “But they beat us by one quarter of a percent. I did the math in my head while driving in this morning. I think accountants call that a rounding error.”
Cameron says he expects his 3D science-fiction epic to take back the box office record through an international theatrical release of the movie that will take place ahead of “Avatar 2” debuting in December 2021.

He's referring to a rerelease of AVATAR not it's sequels.

What do you guys think? Will Avatar reclaim the throne or will End game remain up top?

If they re-release Avatar it will reclaim the record. But then they could always re-release Endgame at some point. Endgame's initial run was higher than Avatars so it won fair and square.

Nah, the film industry is way to different nowadays and Avatar 2 doesn't have a real gimmick to bank off of. Also Disney isn't gonna put it out in theaters nearly as long hahaha

Wow..he cares that much about box office? His sequel isn’t going to do anywhere near the 1st movie and each one after that is going to do worse

Lol....

I mean, I actually do think Avatar 2 will do really well at the box office (over 1Billion) but over 2.7 billion???? uhhhhh, I'ma wait and see on that one.

Edit: Oh I misread the OP. He means Avatar 1, due to re-release? I mean sure, why not? Doesn't really seem to matter at this point.

Really, really don't see it happening.

Even if the film is literally a jump in technical quality from the first and even if it does well with critics and audiences... just no.

There is no way Avatar 2 is as successful or close to the first movie. Times have changed and people have soured on this movie. It was all hype with no substance.

Avatar getting the record with a new IP and no China is infinitely more impressive than a Marvel movie limping past the finish line after 10 years of buildup.

I don't know if Avatar 2 will reclaim the crown though.

The hype around Avatar 1 was crazy. I don't see that happening for Avatar 2. Maybe if it was released in a somewhat logical timeframe but this is 10+ years after Avatar 1.

People aren't as thirsty for 3D movies anymore, no matter how well they're made. The movies are gonna have to be certifiable classics to get as many people in the seats as the first one did.

Good luck.

I remember when people were saying he didn’t care. Welp, looks like he does. An accounting error? Reminds me of when people tried to say Endgame fudged the numbers.

He sounds salty as hell

Record’s gone Jim, let it go.

Yeah I could see a re-release happening. Just for the headlines going into Avatar 2 I could definitely see it happening.

If James Cameron really wants to reclaim the top box office movie paradigm, then he needs to re-release the special edition of Avatar in theaters before Avatar 2 - like what Avengers Endgame did; then it will surely top it.

All that will end up happening is a rotation of James re-releasing Avatar and Marvel doing the same with Endgame until they both have sex.

Not surprised he actually does care, but didn't expect him to say anything, much less months after the fact. Then again, guess it'd be in bad taste to do around the time when he's supposed to give congratulations lol

Didn’t Avatar make most of its money from China?
