Does anyone else use gyms here? And do you have the same experience of people playing electronic mahjong on the bikes as they go super slow?

Like, why even go if you're barely gonna work out and just watch TV or play mahjong. It infuriates me

I had multiple times where I had to wait for a treadmill to be available (there are 6) where everyone was walking on the treadmill, and not a fast walk.
As long as you're a user do whatever you want I guess, it's still better than doing nothing.

Dear Lady and Gentlemen of our illustrious Line group!
Seems like today's smartphone firmware re-installing fried my Line backup, and getting access to my account apparently now requires either a facebook account or a phone number, and since I don't have the former and wont give them the latter... I'm sad to say that I probably won't be able to get back into our fine group :( (unless they remove their authentication bullshit or I can find some other solution ofc).

I wonder if there's some sort of web/pc client based solution...?
edit: mhm... nope. doesn't work without the smartphone app... great
anyway, fuck them and their greed for personal data!

Heads up: Don't even bother with LINE PC, its very easy to be hacked. All those times you hear about people asking for 5000yen in iTunes gift cards? Always down to hacked LINE PC accounts.

Furthermore, for people using the Japanese LINE app outside of Japan, restrictions are being further tightened to disallow access to regional stamps - the struggle is real.

Out of curiosity, what makes using line for PC so easily hackable? It's the same account and I don't think you need to change any settings to be allow PC logins.

Reposting from another thread. I'll be going to Japan for the first time this year, hopefully in October. I was wondering if anyone living there can do me a huge favor and help me make a reservation at the famous Jiro's sushi restaurant. I looked at their website and it states that foreign visitors will have to book via a hotel receptionist but I'll be doing Air BnB during my stay so that's out of the question. If anyone is willing to help I'd greatly appreciated. Thank you.

That feeling when the company that you're scheduling an interview with, which you had somehow thought was located in Shizuoka, is in fact located in Fukuoka. 前調べ不十分

thanks, but since the mobile app is 100% necessary, I have no use for the PC one anyway. Sadly.
My quest for an unused/abandoned facebook account hasn't been successful either so far.

edit: no luck...
maybe I should ask in the fuck zuck thread if someone intending to delete his account would be willing to give me his login data...

First time posting in this thread but can anyone recommend a good MVNO? I just got a Mitsui credit card so I don't think I'm restricted now; guy at Yodabashi told me I needed a Japanese credit card.

Looking at various sites, I have narrowed it down to Mineo or Line mobile. Line seems good for the unlimited SNS but I only use line. Plus, I have a pocket wifi so data isn't important to me. Calling is more important since there are times I have to call my colleagues and other people so the all you can use 10 minutes plan looks good to me. They both offer it as well. So either seems fine really. Just curious what people use here.

I just use SoftBank which is probably overkill for what you are looking for. Don't know which MVNO is good. But the UQ and Ymobile ads are good.

I bought a sim free iPhone to avoid a 2 year contract with any of the big three. If I were to get a contract with any of them, it would have been AU since they were giving me a decent deal and for AU Monday lol.

I've been using Bic Sim since I moved here almost two years ago. It's cheap and does what I want it to. Comes to like 1500 yen a month or some shit.

Not sure I would say that, but for me I never think about my phone bill. I pay whatever so that my phone is the fastest model with the fastest connection and works if I am home or abroad without any extra setup.

How much are people paying for home internet in Tokyo area?

I need to make a new contract because I just moved but I do not know which ones are good as my old internet was included in the rent. What is a regular price? I usually just stream Netflix and play online on the PS4.

I'm paying 6k for Softbank's Internet (1 Gb), but it's giving me a 1,5k discount on my phone bill, so it's not that bad I also got 15k in cashback. Probably would have been cheaper if I got it as a part of some kind of a campaign.

I pay way too much. I have two different bills and they're both around 3,500 yen. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I just finished a contract call with NTT (side-provider Asahinet) as they offered 1gb net for 3450 yen. I should have that working on Sunday so yey for not waiting for two weeks which is pretty common.
I also called イッツコム as it was one of the offering in the apartment manual. They generously offered 160mb for 6000 yen. What the hell at that price...

Chestnutvinegar: Are you renting some equipment?

Also, I found this in the net. It's not new but gives some general idea about prices which you also confirmed: http://www.tokyofamilies.net/2017/02/which-home-internet-plan-is-the-best-in-japan/

I wouldn't risk it, but if you feel that's safe then maybe it is enough. I can't imagine EVERY LINE PC account gets hacked and I suppose avoiding dodgy websites with redirects will help too.
Hm. Guess I'll read into it more. When I set it up, I had to verify with a code generated on the phone app to log into the computer app and then all messages were still encrypted until I verified again on the phone app with a code generated on the computer. But I don't know anything about computers, just seemed legit to me. My boss uses it on his work computer with no real trouble. *shrug*

Hey guys.

I will be in Japan (tokyo/yokohama/saitama mainly). I haven't been in Japan since 2013. Studied there before as well. So Japanese isn't a problem.

Any events and places I should see? Not looking for the typical things. I am into Japanese horror manga, some games, fashion and food of course. Help a brother out?

I assume you're still on your old contract, where you're paying separately to NTT and the provider. 2? years ago the rules have changed and now you the payment is being done in one chunk and you don't need a separate contract with NTT (unless you use them as the provider).
Thanks to this, Internet costs went down a bit. If I'm correct, you might look into updating your contract or changing the provider to pay less per month.

Interesting, thanks. I'm moving soon, so will need to do it all over again then. Kind of want to switch from Freetel (now Rakuten Mobile owned), so will need to look into that too.

Update on this. I finished reading Kitchen. It was really really good. My coworker (a fellow JET) read through it in English after seeing me read it in Japanese and that translation sure seemed rough. Looks like a lot of the style was lost.
Tried out Kafka on the Shore but after 30 pages I decided it's a little too difficult for me right now, so I moved on to 夜は短し歩けよ乙女 which I bought the other day.
Also seems challenging but I'll push through a bit longer. At least this one's not like 1000 pages.

Anyone got any other recommendations? I'd like something a bit more lighthearted than Kitchen, possibly with some romance in it
I don't think anyone cares but maybe someone does, so here's an update on my Japanese novel reading adventures.
After giving up on Kafka, I also gave up on 夜は短し歩けよ乙女 because I couldn't follow it well enough. I'm about halfway between N3 and N2 in terms of Japanese level afaik.
So after this, I talked to a co-worker and asked him for recommendations based on my reading level, citing Kitchen as a nice, readable book. He came back to me a few days later with a nice list, and I proceeded to buy them all from various Book Off 100 yen sections. I really enjoy how easy it is to track this stuff down here.

Anyway, after Kitchen, I read 国境の南、太陽の西 by Murakami. It seems to be a far lesser-known one of his, but my co-worker recommended it specifically because it's not fantastical, and therefore easy to follow.
I didn't have much trouble and read the whole thing in a week or so. It being my first full Murakami novel, I found it was not exactly what I expected. The main character's morals are pretty garbage and he never really got what he deserved, so I was left feeling a bit strange about how the story went, but the events and the mystery of it were enough to keep me pretty compelled. It ended in a really open way and I liked having to interpret it myself. There was also way more sex than I was expecting, although apparently this is a theme in Murakami's stuff? Either way I picked up some vocabulary on that subject. 亀頭 is a word I find particularly funny.

After that, I wanted to read something not depressing, so I tried out 神様 by 川上 弘美. This is one I found recommended as an easy read online.
Unfortunately for me, the writing style is a little more formal and less conversational than Murakami or Yoshimoto, so I found it a bit of a slog. I managed to read through the whole thing, though, and ended up enjoying it well enough. It has a lot of really weird fantastical situations in it which made it particularly hard to get my head around, but it was lighthearted and enjoyable. The story about the mermaid in there is particularly good.

Having finished that, I'm now reading another Yoshimoto Banana novel, 哀しい予感. Going back to Yoshimoto is super refreshing, because her style is so easy to understand, but still descriptive enough to be interesting. I've found her to be my favourite author so far, and her characters tend to be really relatable.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of info online about this book in English because it was never translated, but basically it's about a 19 year old girl and her relationship with her family, especially her dishevelled music teacher aunt. I'm almost done with it and am really enjoying it.

After this, I'm thinking about either trying out the novel of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, or just jumping straight into another Yoshimoto novel with either 'The Lake' or 'Tsugumi.'

Uhhh, anyone else reading Japanese novels lately? Got any recommendations? Ever read any of these books? Want me to shut up?

Keep at it. Reading novels is a huge booster for Japanese skills, without a doubt.

The only Yoshimoto Banana I've read was つぐみ, and it was pretty enjoyable and an easy read. Didn't really leave a strong impression though.

I often recommend ペンギン・ハイウェイ to people in the intermediate level. It's a really fun magic-realism / light SF novel by 森見 登美彦, the same author as 夜は短し歩けよ乙女 (though much easier reading). There's an anime movie adaptation coming out this summer too, so it might prove to be a decent conversation-starter?

I've found Murakami's short stories to be more enjoyable than his novels in Japanese. I found his most recent novel, 騎士団長殺し, to be quite a slog, though it had its moments.

One of the most consistently interesting authors I've discovered is 村田沙耶香. The first thing of hers I read was コンビニ人間 which won the Akutagawa Prize two years back, and is a pretty easy read. I absolutely loved it, and have read another half dozen or so of her short stories and novellas since, and none have disappointed.

Thanks so much for the reply! I'll definitet have to check out ペンギン・ハイウエイ, sounds right up my alley. A different co-worker already recommended コンビニ人間, but I haven't picked it up yet. Your praise has definitely pushed it up my list!

I've been thinking about applying for a monbunkagakusho and coming back for my PHD... I wonder if that's a good idea or not. Although I could apparently chose any university I want... may as well go for the Todai ;)
On a more serious note, (haven't done any research into the matter yet), would anyone know some university which specialises in the bubble economy and or economic crisis, especially concerning social impact?

I'm back! I finished 時をかける少女 (which was a super fast read) and then read all of コンビ二人間. Really enjoyed that! Got a recommendation for another 村田 novel, or am I good to just pick any of hers and go for it? Gonna read ペンギン・ハイウェイ next!!

I have no idea which book to pick up. Could you list the recommendations here, so I can also visit some book off for them?

Also Dingens, Todai has Economics faculty so I bet they have what you are looking for, and it's never a bad idea to study here. Admission is not crazy expensive and you are done in three years max.

What's your level? I'm kinda in the upper intermediate stage rn.

Here are all the books I've read so far:
キッチン by 吉本 ばなな
哀しい予感 by 吉本 ばなな
国境の南、太陽の西 by 村上 春木
夜のくもざる by 村上 春木
氷菓 by 米澤 穂信
コンビ二人間 by 村田 沙耶香
神様 by 川上 弘美
時をかける少女 by 筒井 康隆

and I'm now reading ペンギン・ハイウェイ by 森見 登美彦.

My favourites so far have been 夜のくもざる, コンビ二人間 and 哀しい予感, so I'd recommend those, but I enjoyed all of them. The easiest is definitely 時をかける少女, followed by キッチン. I guess there's a reason they're so often recommended to beginners.

I haven't found anything as downright incredible as コンビニ人間. The next best is probably the novella ギンイロノウタ. The stories in 殺人出産 were also pretty good, but much more "thought-experimenty."
