Ok i think this helps confirm Microsoft just made a fuck ton of Series Xs available globally if even Japan got 3k

A part of me kinda knew FFO wasn't gonna do well, but it still hurts all the same.

Here's hoping that it can carve a little niche for itself globally.

Sometimes I wonder about the strength of the FF IP in Japan. 14 has at least been big over there and I think Remake sold decently. And I guess expectations were never big for Origin to begin with...

That's really bad for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, but maybe the western sales will make it up.

Do we know how many MS actually shipped? Could be they concentrated XSX shipments to the US and UK. That what Sony seems to do with PS5 while the rest of the world gets scraps.

In Japan I would say that FF has lost a lot of strength compared to its maximum splendor.

It makes me wonder if it can't be the reason why Square Enix announces so many new FF inspired IPs that aren't really FF.

No but given xsx previous was getting like sub 1k weekly sales for a while its a big jump in a similar timeframe to NA and EU broad availability for a week

Yeah I would agree. Would be even worse without FF14 lol.

I don't know why people are shocked at FFO bombing. how does anyone look at that game and go "yea, japanese players want to play that". shit would have tanked if it was on switch, IMO

and I say that as someone who likes how stupid it seems to be. this is less on FF's selling power and more on them just not making a game that's appealing to the market

I'm kinda curious, do we know how much the FF14 expansions sold in Japan? Guessing most of that is digital but wonder if SE releases that info.

Hoping FFO picks up down the line and that western sales makes up for it. Would love it to do well.

Square achieved their number one goal of selling the game to a company (Epic in this case), so I'm sure they're good.

Everytime I see these physical charts I wonder if the low sales are because of the avaiabilty of digital version of today... I know that the japanese consumers still prefer to buy physical copies, but there must be a few that drifited to the digital market.

Anyways, Japan doesn't care about chaos and bullshit.

Origins always looked like a "how did this get made?" kind of game.

why? The game itself is fine. It's got flaws, the technical side is pretty awful, but its genuinely fun to play, and the FF flavour is awesome, and while the story isnt gonna win awards, its actually got some good moments.

even on a concept level, an action focused FF game isn't a bad idea at all. It feels like it wasn't provided enough time/budget, though.

Asano is almost an entity apart of Square now.
Nintendo was really smart to partner with them as early on as they did, since they have a very stable and consistent stream of (mostly) exclusive RPGs that do a good job of bridging the gap of old-school aesthetic appeal and more modern design sensibilities. Though the DQ3 remake is going to be for everything, I don't doubt that the lion's share of sales for it will be on Switch because of how closely linked the entire HD-2D series has been for Nintendo hardware.

How does DQX, a japan only game, compare to FFXIV in terms of popularity?

Speaking of Japan only:

Momotaro reached 3.5 million sales.

Here's hoping that it can carve a little niche for itself globally.

Didn't it do 4,700 in UK at launch? That doesn't sound very promising for its worldwide numbers.

In Japan I would say that FF has lost a lot of strength compared to its maximum splendor.

It makes me wonder if it can't be the reason why Square Enix announces so many new FF inspired IPs that aren't really FF.

I guess the 7th and 8th generation wasn't kind to Final Fantasy.

What's the switch YTD compared to 2021 YTD

It's 204k behind if I'm getting it right, like 1.27 million against 1.47 million.

I am still at a loss that this character and this story were greenlit when this could have been the perfect game celebrating 35 years of FF by having this game be a retelling of FF1 where you create your own Warrior of Light with Nioh 2's character creator as the basis

Really all these square projects need to die so they stop making them and get back to their roots
SE has been making these kind of games forever, hell FFO screams 2000 SE. It bombing in Japan doesn't mean anything either when most of there mainline titles and spin-offs have been doing well. FFO wasn't going to appeal to everybody in the first place. So regency bias is rather annoying.

I'm talking about Series X specifically because there have been hints that Microsoft have massively ramped up production of Series X in recent weeks. Looking at all XBS doesn't help that point.

You might be right, Series S is at 19,548 YTD and Series X is at 15,694 YTD. Definitely a shift in ratio this week, I'll keep track to see if that holds.
