So using this and the data above.

Average 3rd party sales on :
ps4 = approx 85k
Switch = approx 56k
Per new release (crude calculation doing total volume / new releases
Ps4 = 109k
Switch = 112k

So 3rd parties do still perform better on ps4, although that is heavily caveated with the fact that the top 5 ps4 releases were 3rd party releases which heavily weights their averages.

Days gone sold pretty decently. I'm always curious why certain western games take-off in japan.

It's tough to remember that sometimes. The charts can be depressing to look at when you go back and see that it used to be uncommon for the weekly Top 10 to ever have a title chart below 10k. At some point in future world, hopefully, we get digital included.

Because the majority of new third party games don't target Japan. Resident Evil 2, for example, did less than 10% of its sales in Japan.

I'm absolutely not sure digital is the main explanation for this decline. Digital ratio is pretty low in Japan compared to the West.

But Switch is one of the fastest selling consoles in the US and EU. So they should put their games on Switch.

Usually because these games are in line with their local Pop Culture. In the case of Days Gone, it is the biker and zombie elements of the game that helped its sales. The Rock & Roll culture (via the Rockabilly style) for example has been established in Japan since the mid 50s.

Who ever argued that "digital is the main explanation"? No one.

It is a factor though. We know digital sales for many games are pretty high. Even on Nintendo platforms we have witnessed a growth in digital sales. We know, for example, that some digital only 3DS games have sold more than 200k or 300k units. We know, via Nintendo shipments, that even big games like Splatoon and Smash had a sizable digital ratio. Also, we can safely estimate that at least 5-10%, on average, of total sales of packaged come from digital channels. We can't measure how much digital has eated BUT we can safely assume that a portion of physical sales migrated over digital channels.

Of course there are other factors: competition from mobile games and aging population concur to the decline in physical video game sales.
