Hmm, so One Piece 99 jumped back up during the leadup to volume 100, but none of the others did. At least not enough to make it to the top 50
According to Shoseki, Volume 98 was 63rd, so not that far. And all the volumes from 91 onwards made it into the weekly top 500. It's been years since One Piece had last had such strong backlog sales. It had over 100k units sold of older volumes, which if I'm not mistaken hasn't happened since the release of volume 80 in early 2016.

Can you explain the reasoning?

Or speculate, rather.

Do we know what's the best selling volume this year so far?
Demon Slayer #23 at over 5m units sold (closer to 6m if you include its limited edition, but Oricon keeps them separated).
#2 should still be Demon Slayer Gaiden at 2.33m, but JJK #14 might overcome it (not sure, depends on KnY's boost with season 2).

Huh. Was expecting jjk considering how popular it was earlier this year. Thanks

Just literally finished reading Tokyo Revengers. That season finale just... I couldn't wait for a new season haha.

So... If Japan is like me, who just binge read the entirety of what's left unadapted of Tokyo Revengers in like a day, I think it's not farfetched for Tokyo Revenger to have a small boost this week... Hopefully.

Guys, if you haven't watched it, do so it's amazing xD

Had to double check if TR had sold 1'6.million or 1.6Hundred thousand haha. (Felt like a certain skeleton character reading a certain pirate's bounty in One Piece, One Piece reference in case it's not undersood lol).

Funny thing is even if TR had sold in the hundred thousands that would have been enough for it to be #1.

Obviously this was the season finale boost and I think Tokyo Revengers anime was broadcasted on Saturdays at 12:00 AM Japan time or something like that, since it was released 2:00 PM in my time (Mexico time) so this boost is just saturday and sunday, which probably is the biggest boost, but I think we can expect the next week to be very similar in sales for Tokyo Revengers (Maybe a bit higher... who knows?).

Kind of ironic/funny to see KnY in the top 10 yet again, but JJK falling out of it.

One Piece ranking 3 is nice... But in my opinion the numbers are just "fine". All that advertisement, etc might have brought over some fans that hadn't bought the Wano volumes, but other than that the boost was very minuscule imo.. But meh, what can you expect from a 25+ year old series, it's difficult for it to get new fans.

Do we know if Oricon tracks convinience stores, because I read that there is this new edition of One Piece Shonen Jump Remix that's like cheaper and sold in convenience stores? Maybe it's not being tracked? Although it's not likely that it would do huge numbers, but just asking anyways.

I'm 99% sure the Black Jack 176m number on wiki is wrong. The publisher never officially revealed such a number (they announced 45m) and every original Japanese source that used it have since removed it (western media that used them haven't been updated)
What about Devilman having 50 million circulation copies with only 5 volumes?

That number sounds pretty fake too. And according to mangazenkan, a japanese source that keeps track of all manga with circulation copies of over 10 million, Devilman isn't even listed (unless I missed it somehow)

Black Jack is listed as 45M there too.

Devilman has a lot of spin-off manga series. My assumption is that the circulation number is correct, but that it includes all of these. (Maybe even the novels?)

Devilman has a lot of spin-off manga series. My assumption is that the circulation number is correct, but that it includes all of these. (Maybe even the novels?)

The circulation number is correct and official since it was given when Cry Baby was released.
But, as Rouk said, it's with spin offs (it doesn't say whether it's spin offs or not, but it would be a pretty big difference between all the big sellers and Devilman if 50mill with 5 volumes was the case).
Devilman had almost 40 volume sin total counting all the spin offs BUT even counting the spin offs, I'd bet you could attribute most of its sales (Say around 40-50%) to the original five volumes.

With the recent passing of Takao Saito (RIP) it makes you wonder how some titles with large numbers sold. Example, Golgo 13 with 200 volumes having sold 300million, and yet whenever a new volume is released... Do we see it ranking? I don't think so, at least I don't remember.
Same with Kochikame, I think I have a faint memory of remember a Kochikame volume ranking like top 10... More than a decade ago? But other than that I don't remember Kochikame or Golgo ever ranking top 10 on weekly sales.
Other example I can think of is Kinnikuman and Prince of Tennis, there is some data from Prince of Tennis's run in WSJ and it was a best seller, and now with Shin Prince of Tennis it has slowly but surely decreased its week #1 sales to like less than 40k iirc (While in its hayday it probably sold around 400k week 1).

That makes me think that, for old, long manga like that:
a) Most of their sales where in their hayday OR
b) They have very strong legs.

Just with a quick google search, this was Kochikame's 185 volume 1st week sales, which don't get me wrong those are pretty good sales for most manga (not in WSJ, that is) BUT it does make you wonder how did Kochikame get to 150 million copies sold with numbers like this?

21.- Kochikame #185 Osamu Akimoto 32,089/32,089 Shueisha

Did it sell in the millions during its hayday? Maybe some old Kochikame volumes sold more than 1 million per copy, and then just slowly lowered.

It also helps that for these two mangas in particular, you could buy any volume and it didn't matter much, as their stories are episodic... I guess that could help them just being re-published in different formats.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

EDIT: As for this week's sales.

Told you all Kimetsu would get a new boost from its 2nd season... Which scarely enough hasn't even started lol.
Kimetsu is... Is not only lightning in a bottle, I don't remember if I had a discussion on this board, or I think it was in another board when the movie released, but basically no other piece of media has ever, in the history of humanity, exploted the way Kimetsu did. The thing sold 82 million copies in like the span of a year, not even Harry Potter sold that much in any single year (Yes, I know Kimetsu had like 20 books of backlog to get to that number, while HP probably had like 4 when it got to its peak sales, BUT Kimetsu especially exploded in Japan, where there are 120 million people, and when you, for example, think of how many people went to see Mugen Train... It sold 41 million tickets.. That'd be 1/3 of Japan's population, though of course we can't know how many of those people repeated the movie.)

So basically, never bet against Kimetsu haha. It clearly has some room left to grow, especially when you consider that 41 million tickets were sold for Mugen Train (Assuming no one repeated the movie that's 41 million people, but of course that's not the case since some people must have watched twice, three times, etc) BUT it has sold around what...? 7-8 million per book? There is a huge difference between people who saw Mugen Train in the movie theater and actual manga readers, even if only a small fraction of those watchers decided to continue the story by reading, imagine just 1 million people out of those, that's 22+million new Kny volumes sold.

Tokyo Revengers is probably out of the race for #1 at this point, it would still be on it if it had remained in the 1'3M range.. But yeah TR fought to the end.

Jujutsu Kaisen SHOULD get 1st place but it all depends on KnY really, let's just wait and see, the following 2 weeks are going to be the decisive ones.

NSESN
#1, #2 and #3 are pretty much set in stone, we don't know the order but it's gonna be KnY, JJK and TR. What are your possibles #4 and #5 that would take OP out of the top 5?

We still have 8 weeks left for Oricon tracking right?
I don't expect to happen since JJK is getting a new volume soon, but could Demon slayer surpass it before the deadline?
Tokyo Revengers is probably not going to reach n2.

end of the year ranking should be
  1. Jujutsu Kaisen
  2. Demon slayer
  3. Tokyo Revengers
  4. Attack on Titan
  5. One piece
  6. My Hero Academia
  7. Chainsaw Man
  8. Spy x Family
  9. Kingdom
  10. Kaiju #8
Wonder how jump ranking will be

Did it sell in the millions during its hayday? Maybe some old Kochikame volumes sold more than 1 million per copy, and then just slowly lowered.
Kochikame had 29.86m in circulation for 50 volumes.
Then 49.5m for 65 volumes in 1990
50m, 67 volumes
70m, 79 volumes in 1993
84m, 90 volumes in 1994
93m, 98 volumes in 1996
100m, 100 volumes in 1996
112m, 112 volumes in 1999
118m, 119 volumes in 2000

After that, there is a lot of different numbers that don't quite all make sens. But that's the point where it really started to slow down.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is any data for older Golgo 13 prints. But it's safe to assume that it once sold a lot and that it's now way past its prime.

Thanks for the info Rouk. So it was always a great seller, kind of weird that it got an anime only after 20 years, you would have thought that it would have gotten an anime pretty soon like Dr. Slump did.

Jiggy It's the Kimetsu effect.

It was bound to happen that whatever manga that became hot after Kimetsu's ending would get a boost in sales. Just look at how the manga charts went crazy after KnY.

Am I saying JJK and TR are not good? No, not at all. I really love Tokyo Revengers and JJK is... fine imo. But it's no coincidence that these two got a huge boost (and by huge boost I mean they literally are making numbers that in the past would be record-breaking, in fact Tokyo Revengers became Kodansha's yearly highest seller if I am not wrong - at least within the time Oricon has existed-.) and this is all happening because of the new reader base KnY created.

Also, I wouldn't say any manga not named Kimetsu no Yaiba has leapfrogged One Piece really.. Sure, Jujutsu Kaisen oversold One Piece's volume 99, but who knows in the long run, basically JJK won the sprint while OP's volumes will win the race.
And Tokyo Revenger currently has sold 1 million per volume (OP volumes still sell around 2 million, and I imagine a bit more than that since they still get like a 3mill first run print), and TR latest volume sold 435,000 week 1, One Piece sells 1'000,000 week 1.

Even though it's unlikely, Demon slayer could surpass JJK and get first place again. All depends on how big of a boost it will get with the second season.

Are there any new volumes for Spy x Family coming out?

Spy x Family #8 will release on November 4th (and will thus have 3 week counted in the 2021 oricon year).

Even though it's unlikely, Demon slayer could surpass JJK and get first place again. All depends on how big of a boost it will get with the second season.

Are there any new volumes for Spy x Family coming out?
jjk movie vs demon slayer season 2 , would love too see the respective boosts, when does the year/time period end

Wonder if Blue Box will be in the top 10 next week. Dandadan and Mashle are a lock, but is Blue box also in? All three seem to be doing extremely well.

Wow, One Piece may actually end up below MHA this year.

Even if volume 101 releases in December it won't be counted as part of 2021's yearly sales right?

MHA is less than 400k behind OP, I think it passing OP is almost certain
The biggest fight will be between MHA and AoT

This means nothing without the same research being done with AC lol
This doesn't change the issue that there is no similar data for AC, but this new article puts the KnY IP revenue for 2020 at 1 trillion yen, including 90% for merchandising.
Thought you might be interested by the split.

900 billion yen for merchandising alone, holy shiiiiit

Ain't no way AC merchandising revenue comes close to this, let alone One Piece like the guy was talking about

Some people really don't fully understand just how HUGE of a hit Kimetsu was in Japan during 2020

Being a more established franchise with way more characters means nothing when merchants all over Japan are literally sticking anything Kimetsu-related to any kind of product just to increase their sales lol (and they actually managed to increase it!!)

"Beverage maker DyDo Drinco has expanded a sales plan for canned coffee products featuring Demon Slayer graphics, by 15 million cans. The Osaka-based company, which would not break down its total sales, said it sold more than 50 million cans of coffee in the first three weeks after releasing the Demon Slayer themes in October. In the year through January, canned coffee collabs are expected to equal more than 10% of all coffee products sold the previous year." - Asia Nikkei

Social phenomenon for a reason.
