I'm pretty sure it is at the top now. JJK is the second highest selling in terms of new volume releases (or maybe SxF is idk but I think JJK) but One Piece is the only one doing a million in a week. That said, I think Demon Slayer was the only one to really 'pass' One Piece in the way you are asking. I think JJK got pretty close and might have actually passed One Piece for one volume but the rest (TR, SxF) all passed it only through backlog. As far as new volume releases go, One Piece has been as dominant as ever with only the post-anime KNY volumes blowing past it

The only reason One Piece is rarely the best selling manga of the year now is that backlogs have dropped (obviously since there's 100+ volumes) so a new hot property with an anime boost can sell more in a single year even if its individual volumes don't come close. Blue Lock is most likely going to be the best selling manga of 2023 and its individual volumes sell like a million less than One Piece

It's a drop (though it's hard to tell exactly how much of a drop it is since this is a 6-days first week and the two previous volumes were 3-days first weeks).

Nothing aside from One Piece sells 1M in a week anymore. Even One Piece sometimes misses that.
The next two series are Jujutsu Kaisen and Spy x Family.

I like the compromise of the official French title: Tsugai - Daemons of the Shadow Realm.
It released after the english version, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were instructed to keep the English title to create some brand power for the franchise worldwide. But it still allows us to say "Tsugai" when we talk about it.

I don't know more than this about Deep 3. But it is trustworthy, yes. The Japanese editors of Deep 3 have mentionned before on color pages that the series is doing well in France. Extremely rare to see that.

Most series that sell better in France are probably minor.
Like, Leviathan is a manga that was first published in France (but by a Japanese mangaka) and was later published in Jump +. I think it sold better in France than in Japan.
The Miraculous (French tv cartoon) manga adapation is probably way more popular in France than in Japan.
I also remember that there was a Happy spin-off of Fairy Tail that escaped cancellation in Japan because of how well it was doing in France.
But these are all small-sized series. Same for Deep3.

For bigger series, I know of stuff that are disproportionately more popular in France, while still being smaller than in Japan overall. The best example of that is Fairy Tail I think. It's probably at around 13 million units sold in France, making it the 4th best-selling manga of all-time (behind OP, DB and Naruto). But that's still only 1/5th of what it sold in Japan.

As for OP, it is still on track to be selling 7M+ units in Japan imo.
France could achieve that with a sizeable Live-Action boost. But otherwise, One Piece should be slightly down compared to last year.

It's so interesting how certain markets love some series and some don't like I heard in Argentina Fairy Tail, which started being published around 2016, was a "flop" (or at least didn't sell to expectations) since the series started being published way past its hype.

Is it just me or all these numbers kind of low for their respective series (except Blue Lock I think)? Even One Piece seems to be a lot lower compared to the last couple volumes. I wonder if its just a new arc effect and it'll increase again as Oda gets farther into it.

On a positive note, JJK backlog is looking good so far (90k in a week). I could see the series selling 2-3 million more this year in backlog due to season 2's effect.

Yes, Blue Lock will win the year.

There is no room for a Demon Slayer-like run anymore. We're already well into the Summer season, and it's weak in terms of boosts - we know what to expect already.

A Fall anime won't be able to reach Blue Lock even with a huge boost because the year will end in the middle of it and there will be no time to actually sell (and print) all these copies. Take Jujutsu Kaisen for example, it was a fall anime, and was huge (2nd only to Demon Slayer's boost), but could "only" manage to reach 6M units in 2020 (vs 30M the following year).

That's just how it is
Most of the time, shojo/josei get priority with live-action while shonen/seinen get priority with anime

You're right actually, just checking all the 2022 Japanese dramas adaptations, it seems to be more or less 50/50. But two things:
-This means female demo manga are more likely to get dramas than male demo manga (since there are way more male demo manga being produced)
-I also noticed that seinens are way way more likely to get dramas than shonens, whereas it's more evenly split between Shojo/Josei/Boys Love on the female demo side.

This is something to consider: there is fewer big shojos than big shonens, so you'll also get fewer anime adaptations (but even considering this, they don't get as many animes as male demo manga, it's just an aggravating factor)

But yes, Honey Lemon Soda's case is weird. Smaller and younger shojos have received anime adaptations in recent years, so it's not just about the demographic bias. There is something else at play here.
