Jason Schreier: "a CDPR dev told me recently that they'd just clocked a 100-hour week."

Yikes, if CDPR devs were literally being chained to their desks and had to pay for the pleasure folks would still defend the corporation that employs them by saying things like: "at least they feed them!" "They don't even beat them!" SMDH

Capitalism is a hell of a drug.

I was working consistent 80-100 hr weeks for months crunching on a game a couple years ago. It’s not just the hours but also being under the gun trying to solve problems under tight deadlines. Shit sort of breaks you. I left that job not too long after the project shipped.

Just delay the game further and give these people back a regular workweek. The players will still be there whether it comes out in December or March.

Man I thought they couldn't enforce large amounts of crunch with everyone WFH, boy was I wrong.
God this really sucks to read about again, 100 hours is absolutely insane and ridiculous.
Literally developers damaging their own mental health to achieve an unattainable release date during the year of Covid.

Unpopular opinion however if you want to be the best it takes lots and lots and lots of hours.... i have my own business and i spent the best part of 2 years working 7 days a week for 14 hours a day, it pays off to put the effort it.

CD-Projeckt have already said that i think 10% of their annual profits will go to their employees, now say they have 250 employees and this game makes $20 million (that is extremely conservation figure) all the employees will get $8,000 each ontop of their normal salary.

It pays to put the effort in
What makes you think the 10% bonus will be equally split among the employees? I bet the higher ups will eat the majority of it.

You realize the employees working 100 hours a week aren’t going to see shit, right?

They’ll get like a fucking pizza party and not even the good pizza it’ll be like Pizza Shack down the street. Your response is wack.

I'm happy for you that you aren't pushed to make deadlines and make sacrifices for the career you chose. Doesn't mean that has to be the norm.
Nice assumptions, albeit completely misguided ones. I’m just not one to defend poor work environments and would rather push for better work life balances than devour corporate boot because I’ve also had to endure them. Pushing for better across the board and empathising with those suffering under them sounds better than the dumb take of “but I also work shit hours”.

They really should have just delayed until the spring.

i know delays lead to more crunch but it could have at least meant the devs could have reduced their hours and spent more time with their loved ones over the holidays and weekends

I really can't imagine how one would feel after such a week. It must be horrible. Delay the game to 2021 instead of ruining the health of the people working on the game ffs.
Fucking this.

Just delay the god damned thing till next year thing and let these people get some fucking sleep.

People saying they have to make a next gen patch but aren't they working on the next gen version already? I thought the problem has been the scale of the game and current gen not being enough for the game?

How much they getting payed for those hours that's nuts. I'd prob put up with it if it payed $50+ an hour with bonuses. Shit is horrible regardless

Feb/March 2021? For the devs I'd want this. I'm worried excessive work until your eyes bleed to hit late 2020 won't be worth the pain.

I'll check the game out after the hefty patches.

To you, maybe not. Don't put words in the mouths of the CDPR employess, you have no idea what their choices are.
The fact that one of the employees looks "sickly" I'm pretty sure he isn't happy about this.

Also in my mind I really don't see how you could say "I just worked 100 hours this week...it was great!"

No matter how much you love your job, burn out is real.

You are aware productivity evaporates way below 100 hours a week and all you're doing is making people string out the productivity they do have and destroying their work life balance.

Working longer is not working better and people who drink this kool aid are fucking morons.

Do you think you'll go to the grave regretting not working longer? No. But the top regret is working too long.

Stop being a fucking idiot.

i used to walk 12 miles in 6 feet of snow to school everyday, up hill

if you're not in pain and barely conscious, you're not trying
“You don’t like toxic work environments so you must not know what it’s like to work in them” somehow manages to be an even greater stupid take.

I love seeing the grunts come out and share how their 60+ work week justifies it for others.

I've put in 100 hours weeks before. It was a result of bad management. I am extremely successful in my career and my CSV could go toe-to-toe with the vast majority of people. Working long hours is not a choice made in a vacuum. When the "choice" is you either do it or forgo the ability to support yourself, then it isn't a choice at all. You all believing in hustle culture to feel some type of worth is hilarious. "Go find another job"-head boi.

Friend of mine was in talks with CDPR for a job and when they send him the terms he laughed and 'walked away'. So this doesnt surprise me, unfortunately.

I feel so bad for the developers. I hope they get a long vacation. Oh who I am I kidding, they’ll work 100 hour weeks after launch.

I attempt to document every classic response to tweets like this:
  • What's Jason's agenda with this reporting?
  • People aren't working 100 hours.
  • Jason only talks to one source, I doubt that everyone does this.
  • Crunch happens in every industry, this isn't new.
  • Why does he have to steal the developer's spotlight, can't he just let them have some happiness for once?
  • I mean at least they are getting bonuses.
  • Their overtime pay is going to be crazy then.
  • Well they aren't forced to work 100 hours a week, they could just, ya know, quit.
  • If its so bad, why do they still work there?
I think we got a bingo on the first page alone for this. Amazing the way people will bend over backwards to defend bad labor practices.

That bit about rarity is key.

CDPR have been crunch for nigh on a year since the last 2 set of delays.

This is an escalation of that. So overtime for months and now 100 hour days? You're going to damn well kill people if that keeps up.
Agreed. And during one of those short periods I mentioned, I almost killed myself in a car crash when I dozed off for a split second driving from the office back to the developer's studio in the middle of the night. My car hit the side railing on the outside of a turn. On the other side of the railing was a dropoff of about 40' or so. I managed to regain control and get back into my lane, but I'll never forget that moment. You'd think that would have been the end of me doing OT, but alas, I'd do them over the course of the next couple years before I finally stopped.

choices? lmao what, unemployment or crunch?
Did it say anywhere that they would be let go if they refused to work 100 hour weeks? You have absolutely no idea of the inner workings of that company. It's much easier to follow the masses and dogpile on the company, I get it. The gang mentality on this forum can be sickening.

So there's gonna be several hot takes, but I'm going to address the biggest one that infuriates me the most.

"I work X number of hours" combined with "I work X hours and if I didn't want to I'd find another job."

Nothing, and I mean, nothing is worth that much work for one human being. It shows a lack of management or employees. If anybody is working that level of hours, there's a problem. Your ability to do it doesn't excuse that you and them are being used. That's not a defense.

As for "find another job," find it where, exactly? It's 2020 during a pandemic and a mass employment downsize. The idea that I can get me a job off the job tree is, and I'm sorry to be blunt, fucking stupid.

People sometimes to have the option to just find a new job. We excuse this shit when CEOs and Board members are making bank. It's fucking disgusting.

Stop excusing being used as a prop yourself and start objecting to the usage of human as expendable capital.

I routinely work 70-80 hours a week. If I don't want to do it anymore I do have the option of quitting and/or finding a new job. You act like they're chained to their desks.
Y'know this industry is known for having agreements between nearby companies to prevent employees from being hired if they quit, right?
And that's from places like Naughty Dog and Insomniac. I could imagine it's worse with CDPR and close software companies.

Most game developers end up changing their line of work altogether to avoid crunch.

In my line of work (transportation) it is quite easy, yes. No one is forcing them to work there.
"It's not the system, it's the workers who are wrong!"

Nobody has explained to me why they couldn't have just hired more devs instead of upping crunchtime. Especially in COVID times when everyone is remote, why isn't this a possibility?
The explanation always given is "bUt DeVelOpMent Is hArd, iMaGiNE wItH MoRe PeOplE"

The actual reason is rising costs, and likely longer development times to coordinate the pieces (So, even more $$$ into production)

The saddest part is I'm sure a lot of these Devs absolutely love their work and have poured so much time, energy, and emotion into this project that CDPR doesn't have to crack the whip on them to crunch. What CDPR should be doing is making folks take mandatory brakes and providing extra PTO to compensate for these hours in addition to being paid the over time they're legally entitled to.

Maybe they could just work 40 hour weeks, but they want to work 100 hour weeks :^)
I'm sure those employees knew exactly what they signed up for when they started the project and they totally aren't stuck between crunch and unemployment now :^^^)
just in case: /s
More unfounded assumptions. Keep it up, ERA.

If these are full time employees then there's almost no way they would get overtime as they would be salary based. 100 work weeks are insane, the most I've ever pulled are 60-70 hour work weeks and those left me fucking drained. People shouldn't have to give up their life in order to get paid. And even if they wanted to, it's not as straight-forward as just get a new job and work somewhere else when the culture in a lot of studios are exactly the same.

Regardless: fuck crunch and fuck the employees at CDPR (READ: not every employee, but the ones who do) that think shitting on trans people is acceptable
