Jason Schreier/Kotaku: The Last of Us Part II Delayed to Spring (May 29th 2020) [UPDATE: Confirmed by Naughty Dog]

Oct 25, 2017
UPDATE official from ND -

To our fans,

Let me cut to the chase and get the news out of the way. The Last of Us Part II has a new release date of May 29, 2020.

I know. It was just about a month ago when we had our big blowout for the game, letting media play over two hours of it along with debuting our new story trailer and revealing the release date. The positive response we saw from our community was overwhelming. You can feel the energy among the team members. After working on something for so many years, it’s invigorating to get a glimpse of validation for all the hard work.

However, it was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality. At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time. We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team.

While we’re relieved that we won’t have to compromise our vision, we’re disappointed that we weren’t able to avoid this exact situation. We wish we could’ve foreseen the amount of polish we needed, but the size and scope of this game got the better of us. We hate disappointing our fans and for that we’re sorry.

We hope you understand that this additional time ensures that The Last of Us Part II lives up to our collective ambition as well as our commitment to the highest level of quality. We know the extra few months will add to what may already be an excruciating wait for all of us. We are grateful for your patience and continued support. Come next May, you will finally rejoin Ellie in The Last of Us Part II.

The PS4 sequel to The Last of Us will no longer be out in February, sources tell Kotaku. Publisher Sony has delayed The Last Of Us Part II to this spring, just a month after announcing a release date of February 21, 2020.

The news isn’t official yet, and Sony didn’t respond to a request for comment yesterday, but Kotaku has heard from two people familiar with goings-on at Naughty Dog that the game is bumped to spring. We expect an announcement this week.

Update -

GoT also pushed back internally

Wow that was fast.

Delay is odd so fast after a release date announcement but in the grand scheme of things, it won't matter. Hopefully, it avoids Cyberpunk and the really busy March 2020.

No problem for me, I don't mind waiting. Best of luck to the team during these last few months.

I'm all right with that. Less than two weeks before FF7R was really tight for me

He wasn't kidding about the "upset and then over it" thing. Happy I can focus on FF7:R now!

So weird after we just got a big reveal and a releasedate.
They better not release it close to Cyberpunk!

Not really unexpected. In fact its a ND tradition at this point lol. Probably for the best as it was way too close to FF7. I'm guessing new date is April/May.

Just gives me more time to make sure my Ellie Edition money is in order, so I'm fine with this.

What a shame it is to announce a date and “immediately” delay it.

However! Q1 of 2020 is already fucking insanity when it comes to game releases... so I’m not crying about it.

Gives me more time to finish games in Q1!

Doesn’t seem to be a huge delay, so if it helps cut back on crunch, good on them.

Bit stupid of Sony.

Let's announce a date to a whole bunch of fanfare. Then a few weeks later go nahhhhhh it's delayed see ya later

That's a weird one after they waited so long to announce the date. And then just a few weeks later....

That's wild. Obviously I have no issue with them delaying it (especially as it doesn't seem like it will be a long delay) but they've only just announced the release date.

Edit: Depending on their definition of Spring that could be anywhere from March - June.

That's kind of funny actually, but as he said in the other thread, it's not a big deal and that some will be upset and then quickly get over it.

I knew The Last of Us 2 and FFVII Remake would never release less than two weeks apart from each other lol. My wallet is happy
