It's more likely that the announcement is on June 3rd than the actual event.
Which puts the event on that OG June 9 AKA E3 week, unless they want to announce the thing months in advance like Xbox did.
As much as I admire your pessimism, Grubb has always been referring to the events themselves rather than the announcements.

He's clearly implying the event's on the 3rd.

It'd be really cool if they announced it alongside the stream of TLoU 2 today because a lot of fans will be watching that stream.

I was planning on holding off on it but think I'm going to watch it

Why is it more likely? Not that I mind either way I just want to know why specifically it is unlikely that the event is actually on the 3rd.

In what way can ‘PlayStation event,’ which Grubb has been talking about for going on a month, now be interpreted as an announcement for an event? It’s not ambiguous.

The official Sony accounts tweets about today's thing have a definitive statement that there won't be any PS5 news or updates, only TLOU 2.

June 3 is only a week away... One wonders when they'd announce this if that was the case. I wouldn't expect a HUGE amount of notice for an online only event, but I'd expect we'd hear about it this week rather than next if it were the case.

Only because a big event warrants a big buildup, bigger than a few days of notice.
That's the only thing I'm basing it on, it's unlikely Sony does a megaton event without a decent heads-up.

Like I said before, end of the TLOU 2 SoP. Lot's of eyes will be on that tonight.

If it is June 3rd, would it be the announcement of the PlayStation Meeting, or the actual meeting? If it's the actual meeting, wouldn't Sony have to announce it tomorrow, Friday, or Monday?

I feel like they wouldn't announce it Tuesday (June 2) because State of Play's are announced 2 days beforehand.
Ehh it won’t be an in person event anyway so I suppose they could get away with announcing it as little as 1-2 days before imo

They announced the TLOU2 SOP two days before, so i could see that

They could announce it tomorrow no? It is unlikely they will announce anything today considering the Last of Us State of Play but tomorrow is fair game no?

I just think they're cutting it very close, not that it won't go down like that.

Look at Apple and Xbox, they announced the June and July (respectively) events months in advance, because they want tons of coverage from sites = bigger reach.

I still don't get why Star Wars: Project Maverick would get its own event instead of just being shown at EA Play a week later.

My money's on Cod: Vietnam. We Were Soldiers, and all that. Activision has to reveal it soon and they don't have another event scheduled.

What if the State of Play teases the PS5 announcement by simply giving a date that we should not miss out on... They know people are going to tune in for TLOU2, might as well put a little teaser at the end.

How so?
We're getting nothing but news almost every day for their next 2 huge games. The Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima.
It's clear they won't have PS5 outshine those 2 releases.

Next week PS5 hype starts in full swing. They know what they are doing.
Yes, it's been better for ....the past month, I guess. Before that it was terrible.

I think without a live event to make travel arrangements for, announcing as late as Monday would still behoove Sony. We all saw how much the Road to PS5 blew up just by sending a tweet into the internet abyss and letting it stew. This’ll be a biggun.

Apple announces their June event (WWDC) months in advance because it's a worldwide developer conference. Apple announces their other media events ~14 days in advance to allow journalists time to attend. Neither is a factor for an online-only event.

If it's June 3rd, then they'll announce this today, no? Letting people know a week in advance should be fine.

Very excited to see demon souls remake, horizon zero dawn 2 and the rumoured silent hill game as well at this event. Plus whatever else they've got to show.

It's clear Covid 19 messed up all plans. The Last of Us was supposed to release in 2 days. (went from May to June) Ghost of Tsushima hype machine was supposed to start in April instead of May, etc. Everything got delayed a month i would say.

I'm sure their marketing department was a mess for a few months. We had no idea how things would play out.

The cycle of next gen info has been shockingly sparse. Comparatively, last time around we had seen games in february.

You really think a significant lead time is necessary to get coverage from sites that are clearly desperately in need of game news right now? Like, what's the preparation that is necessary?

I don't think Xbox needed to call out July for "bigger reach" either, for the record. They'd get major coverage either way. I think they had to do that because May's thing was not what people were most excited about from them.

Hey I'd love nothing more about this thing than to be wrong, I wish they'd have the event tomorrow if it's possible...
Just hope they open up pre-orders after the showcase xD
Apple announces their June event (WWDC) months in advance because it's a worldwide developer conference. Apple announces their other media events ~14 days in advance to allow journalists time to attend. Neither is a factor for an online-only event.
Yet this year's WWDC event is online only and they still chose to let everyone know since last month.

A developers conference doesn't seem like a great comparison to writers simply re-presenting Sony's PR. The former is far more complicated and requires a greater degree of participation from (virtual) attendees than the latter.

Times change. Information and hype machines doesn't need almost a year to happen now that social media grew even more during the last 7 years.
Last time Sony was trying to clean up their act after the PS3 era, much like MS is doing, which is why they are talking about next gen and have shown their console last year already.
I'm sure Sony announcing PS5 next week, then another push (and announcements) in August with a release in October or November will work amazing for them.
No need to start all that in February.

You can't stop this train starting next week, i'm sure.

Because it's WWDC. Like, they sort of had to announce that it was online-only around the time they normally announced the dates, or else the regular attendees would be wondering what was happening.

The WWDC media event (the keynote) is only a small part of WWDC.

Apple does not announce their normal media events, even the ones that are in-person events, months in advance.
