The negativity about Perfect Dark as a potential franchise to revive is something I can't connect with at all. Sure, Perfect Dark Zero was incredibly mediocre. It was a huge disappointment, not because of the source material it borrowed from but because it was a thoroughly disappointing game through and through. The core idea of slightly campy Spy-Fi game with a female lead would be something novel in the Microsoft catalog. I'll be glued to the announcement if and when it comes, and who knows? It might sell me my next Xbox.

It's a good thing, they need to start using these IPs they have let waste away for years. Revisit Banjo or Conker too!

The Perfect Dark IP has lots of potential and I am very surprised many people don't see it. Joanna Dark is a perfect choice to be Xbox's leading lady. Xbox which doesn't really have a strong leading lady with her OWN franchise(and no I'm not counting Kait from Gears 5). Look at how Lara Croft was revamped successfully with the new Tomb Raider trilogy. I feel Joanna Dark/Perfect Dark could have more success than Lara Croft/Tomb Raider.

Then add making it a third person spy game in a cyberpunk world...? Its much sense why Microsoft/Xbox would revive it especially with Darrell Gallagher. People need to open their eyes. So much potential. Just don't make Joanna like the one in Zero. Hope we get a Black Widow(MCU) type of Joanna Dark.

Perfect Dark is just super played out. They had *checks notes* 2 games, the last one 15 years ago. We're practically drowning in PD games! People just want to get excited for fresh, new IPs like Fable, Halo, Ratchet & Clank, and God of War.

Why would you not count kait if she was the lead for gears 5 and obviously going to be the lead for 6? But as for perfect dark itself I don't think it's that people don't see the potential as much as at this point it has as much potential as any new ip could. There isn't exactly a large perfect dark fan base anymore so I think some, kind of myself included, might just not understand what there is to actually gain in revisiting it aside from a few people saying "I remember that". Maybe even slight brand recognition is a more powerful motivator than I'm giving it credit.

Because Kait didn't start the Gears franchise but was handed it. Joanna Dark started the Perfect Dark franchise and is associated with her. And like I said I feel the reason Microsoft is reviving it is because Perfect Dark has a strong female lead. Its no coincidence that Gallagher who worked on the revamp of Tomb Raider is possibly revamping PD. And we hadn't had a PD in over a DECADE and so a PD reboot would essentially be a new IP. Not sure what's the issue.

This is very true. You hit the nail on the head. If people can't see the potential that you are describing, then they simply aren't trying or have no grasp on basic psychology.

Exactly, Joanna Dark is a recognizable female lead character with her own franchise. Give her the Lara Croft Gallagher makeover and we are in for a treat. I see Microsoft putting her next to Master Chief as Xbox's most recognizable characters. Ips are important not just when it comes to gaming but also characters for the brand. Senua from Hellblade is a dope female lead but she imo is not as recognizable or iconic as Joanna Dark.

Okay I understand what you mean, a franchise entirely centered around a woman rather than having perspective for now shifting to one is why gears is out. for PD you are correct that it is essentially a new IP for many but for myself at least there will inherently be something a little less cool in seeing a PD reboot than seeing something like a horizon reveal. There's always something so exciting about a world where you have no expectations. Just a bit of a bummer to think that a studio with crazy talent is already working within some kind of creative parameters.

Exactly, and imo Kait is not as iconic as Joanna Dark. For crying out loud Gears started off as a dudebro franchise lol.

Not sure why? The last Perfect Dark game was released back in 2005. You do the math. More importantly a rebooted Perfect Dark would be a new IP from narration, gameplay mechanics, new game world and it basically being confirmed that its 3rd person(PD games were traditionally first person). Heck Joanna Dark will have some changes to her. Not only that Xbox has plenty of new IPs it plans on releasing like Avowed and whatever its many studios are working on and so we'll get many "Horizon reveals." Point is from Microsoft's standpoint they see Perfect Dark as a IP that is worth dusting off. Perfect Dark may not have that "Horizon reveal you're looking for but it is 100% going to have that "God of War" type of reveal.

A Perfect Dark reboot is basically gonna be a new world.... Heck this game may in fact only be "Perfect Dark" in name only with Joanna Dark.

Third person means we get Wall guy 2020

I do miss perfect dark so a 3rd person spy guy could be great
I used to love switching heads/bodies on the N64 multiplayer character select screen, I was weird :3

I understand what you are getting at but I think you may be blowing Joanna Darks level of recognition out of proportion a tad. Honestly if you are a fan of the series I apologize if it seems like I'm trying to put out the flames of hype for the franchise. I hope you get a reboot that's as great as you want it to be. I can't say that it's what I'm looking for but I've had years of halo so if someone else wants an old franchise to get some attention then by all means they should get it.

I played both games and I'm not even a HUGE fan while I do like the first game. I just recognize potential and its no coincidence that Gallagher who remade Tomb Raider is working on this game. Never said Joanna Dark is a Lara Croft but she is easily the most iconic female led character that Xbox has. As for the bolded what makes you think this is about me? I'm just clarifying how Microsoft/Initiative see's the IP.

And as for your last sentence(I hope I am reading it correctly), comparing Perfect Dark to Halo due to both being "old" is faulty. We had 6 main Halo games with the 7th installment coming next year and ith about 7 spinoff titles. Once again, we only had TWO main Perfect Dark games the last one back in 2005. Apologies if I misinterpreted your last sentence. Lastly, we don't even know if the game will even be "Perfect Dark" in name.

All in all I don't care whether or not the game by the TI is Perfect Dark or not but if it is I understand why Gallagher picked the IP.

I never even knew the Perfect Dark IP existed until earlier this year, and I predicted it was going to be third person.
I'm excited and just don't understand the reasoning behind being disappointed.

Its definitely 3d person. Xbox need more non 1st person games. Hell even bethezdas most games are 1st person.
If this ends up a cool ghost of the shell knock off I would be really happy.

The bolder portion I included because it seemed you were speaking a bit from passion for the franchise. Was just a feeling I got but apparently not the main motivator. The last line was purely about one old franchise getting more attention than another and maybe PD deserves it since something like halo has been bathed in attention for so long now. But I still would argue that at this point, senua would have more cachet than Joanna purely because of timeliness. If you put out a new game and the character really draws people in then that could change but currently I don't see it.

Didn't this dude just say a couple of weeks ago that his early leaks might've put undue stress on development teams at 343? Might be misremembering. Lesson not learned if not 🙃

The big question if The Initiative game is set in the PD universe is : what about the multiplayer ? Would it be single-player only ?

PD is often considered as the best multiplayer game on the Nintendo 64 (and multiplayer was the most interesting part of Perfect Dark Zero).

From what I understand, it wouldn't be exactly PD but a game set in the universe (like Apex Legends) and probably 3rd-person.

My only disappointment with third person is that I think the franchise would work better as an immersive sim like Deus Ex or Prey. It would be a logical evolution of the "objective" based level design and stealth elements.

I was hoping for an imsim out of this revival. Never played the original, but the dynamic objectives that change with difficulty sounds ripped out straight from the Thief games, :)

But with Microsoft now having Arcane to do in-house imsims for them, it sounds way more likely we'll get another 3rd person stealth shooter, :(

Thankfully I could play the entire game without using the cover system once; and in Mankind Divided I was able to turn off the radar (can't do that in HR without editing hex files)

Still had to have ladders and aug animations, but at least I could cut down 3rd person to a minimum

I'll give it a go but Perfect Dark is kind of a boring franchise. Wish they had gotten to do an original IP.

So if they make a scfi spy game with a female lead and call it perfect dark its boring but if they make a scfi spy game with a female lead and call it something new its great even if its the same game? I dont get it.

I really cant wIt to see what they are cooking they have hired some great talent

It's a similar thing with some people complaining that Playground makes Forza Horizon and not a new IP when Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon are very different racing games, and if Playground called it something else it would not make any of their games magically better.

Absolute hype for this.

Perfect Dark was a diamond in the rough, and Zero was a swing and a miss (for me).

Lots and lots of potential with a strong female lead in third person.

Not a fan of PD. Was hoping for a new i.p.

Maybe it will be so different it will blow me away. Time will tell.
