Jim Ryan on PS5: "The 'bigger differences' have yet to be announced"

Considering how hard this place started to nut over logo where they literally swapped number at the end and doing some super deep think analysis over it then they don't really need announce anything meaningful to get huge hype from core gamer audience. They can milk shit out of this and drip feed tiny bits of info over whole Spring leading up to E3 reveal where they actually reveal shit.

I’m calling it. Touch pads on the sides of the controller. The natural follow up from back touch and front touch. “Side touch”.

So it has the same triggers that the xbox has had for an entire generation..?

Patiently sits and waits for more info....
The DS5 has resistive triggers that let the controller automatically adjust tension depending on what you're doing. So if you've got a bow and arrow you can feel the extra tension as you draw back the arrow. That plus the new haptic feedback system got me all excited to experience it. Can only dream of what Horizon 2 will be like with the power of the PS5, the 3D audio and the new features of the DS5.

What about making a controller that doesnt need to be plugged in all the time?
We know the DS5 has a larger battery, we'll have to wait and see what sort of battery life it gives though.

Sounds awesome. Looking forward to trying these out. I hope devs go all in on supporting it.

Imagine Kratos shouting disappointedly at Atreus for not following orders and you feeling Atreus’ shame and frustration through the haptic triggers.

Posted this in the next-gen thread but I’ll paste my ridiculous prediction here:

The PS5 has a semi-modular design that allows certain components such as the GPU to be “upgraded” over the course of the generation. GPU upgrades are sold by Sony and are easy to swap into the system. PS5 Pro will release with that year’s new PS-GPU, but the PS-GPU upgrade will also be sold separately for existing PS5 owners.
I wish!

I can't wait to experience haptic shame!!! :D

As much as I'm excited for the haptics of the DS5 I'm more excited to see what they're going to do on the VR side of things. I'm sure we'll get VR controllers, but I'm VERY hopeful that we'll also get VR gloves that can provide full haptic feedback and can even lock positions to make it feel like you really have an object in your hand. If I'm in a VR world and there's a fuzzy wuzzy animal in front of me I want to be able to pet it and feel the fur. If I'm playing Half Life Alyx and am holding a crowbar I want to actually feel like I've got it in my hands.

I can only hope Sony are going that deep on VR and accessories :)

I'm starting to wonder if maybe some secrets regarding the DS5 are a game changer

I could see a "phone" connection on top of the DS5 for a Switch-esque setup (although only locally to the PS5) to be a pretty big deal for those that love being able to casually play games anywhere in their house without needing a TV, it also allows them to replace something portable they had before (Vita).
That's been a thing for years with PS4. There's even an attachment for the DS4 to stick a phone on it from sony I think.

Pachter was asked a question about modular consoles a couple weeks back, I found some wisdom in his thoughts:

Yup, that's just remote play with a cheap 10 dollar attachment you can buy now for the DS4.

I still like the idea of a controller with a built in screen that lets you remote play right to the controller though. It'd be small but fuckit, it'd be cool as hell :)

I know this may sound crazy, but hear me out. Jim is seen as an innovator within Sony and is credited with the success success of PlayStation in European regions (rightfully so). He is forward thinking and understand that console revisions are mostly about shifts in graphical fidelity and performance but that consumers long for more. We know that the PS5 is rumored to have around 2.0 ghz clock speeds. Sony chief executive officer Kenichiro Yoshida said he wanted someone to focus on growing PlayStation as an overarching platform before hiring Jim. Jim Ryan likes cars and often references GT franchise. It wasn’t a coincidence that Jim was the man chosen to usher in the PS5 and I’m sure as leading man in Europe he had lots of input on PlayStation 5. It was rumored that PS5 might be called PlayStation V rather than PS5 but made sure there was no ambiguity when he showed to logo at CES. Now Jim comes out speaking of unique features over and above the haptics RT, and the fastest storage in any consumer device ever etc. Curious that he would do that isn’t it? It isn’t normal for Jim to talk about special features during his tenure at a PlayStation but it makes sense now. Jim obviously cares for gamers abroad but part of his heart cares deeply about the European market. Europeans are more likely to ride trains than their American counterparts. This will have affected Jim’s view of PlayStation to some degree. When you put it all together him probably did the right thing going this direction.

Camera and fingerprint scanner in controller for social/personalization/authentication features.

Designed to be wearable in backpack (optional), making PSVR2 'wireless'.

Built-in jetpack, using the traditionally built-in Playstation jet engines.

Probably a fast SSD I think that’s going to be the biggest thing for next gen consoles.

It’s easy to sell a PS5 if PS5 games have minimal to no loading time compared to a PS4.
Jim Ryan: “Each time a new console is released, the processor and graphics improve. Those are enticing of course, but we need to have special appeals as well. We have already confirmed the use of an solid-state drive. Having load times that are next to nothing is a major change.

He's not talking about the SSD because that is already announced.

I agree!

What?

Seriously, I don't really understand your point, remote control for PS5? A PS5 Switch?

That’d be cool. There’s supposedly a Horizon VR game as well. So would be cool if you could feel the metallic frame of a watcher you tame or the blast of teraway arrows.

I could see the tech being awesome in VR.

What could be a big surprise?, dGPU in power brick?

Danger with hyping up unannounced surprise features if they end up being a damp squib on reveal. This could backfire...

They did recently file a patent that splits the current touchpad into two pieces, one on top as now, and one smaller touch strip on the front of the controller above where the current light bar is. Pitched mostly as an auxiliary input for OS operations... like swipe from left to right along this strip to increase volume or whatever.

Of course something like that is hardly a huge deal. But, speaking generally, I’d be cautious about picking at Ryans’s statement too much. It might be a very subjective take that Resetera might not agree with ... his idea of what might be the bigger new elements might differ quite a lot from yours or mine. It also strikes me that he could just be talking about the games which will obviously be a pretty big part of differentiating from the prior generation (although I agree that contextually it would seem a bit odd when everything else in that answer is a platform-level feature). On top of all that, I’m not sure we’re looking at the original English answers - instead I think they may be answers that have gone through two translations now (?) Something to bear in mind maybe.

Yeah the actual controller is great but let's hope the battery life is triple the 8 hours I get out of my DS4 for the DS5
I would kill to get 8 hours out of my ds4s!!! They go about 4 each. Sucks because they are in great shape otherwise. I would really like to upgrade the batteries. It'd be worth it.

Wow that's awful! I've had my two since I bought a Pro at its launch. They're still decent I guess.

I really hope that the PS Meeting will happen in February and not in April or May.
I think it'd make sense for them to get it done in Feb just before the end of their fiscal year to generate more hype around the brand. Anyways, Klee indicated Feb is when we should expect a reveal and of course there's a precedent with the PS4 reveal, so Feb is a very safe bet.

"During the migration from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, there will still be a great deal of PlayStation 4 users. That is very important and we have an obligation to those users."
I know this is marketing speak, but I still feel that there's a whole lot of truth to this statement that cannot be said for every company. I still remember the huge gap of years between Wii and Wii U in which we pretty much had no new Nintendo games to play except Skyward Sword, and Microsoft seemed like they dropped the ball after Kinect launched, only to pick it up again after the Xbox One backlash. Meanwhile, I was still playing great new games on my PS3 well over a year after the PS4 launched. Having great support for the previous generation even as the next one has launched is one of the best things about PlayStation in my opinion.

Mine are a few years old. My experience with lipo batteries has shown me that most devices hace a voltage cutoff that is on the low side. We let ours run all the way down to cutoff over and over through the years and now the batteries are beat. If you can avoid that low voltage, your lithium battery will last alot longer. The ds4 batteries werent big to begin with which leads to running them to dead alot. Then they start holding less charge and it snowballs.

hmmm.. Jim hinting that the biggest changes still haven't been announced?
OK I'll bite...
16tf GPU confirmed ;)

however I suspect that it isn't going to be that, I think it will have a smaller TF count than the xbox series x, but will offer way more unique stuff just like the dedicated share button or touch interface that the DS4 had..

If I was to speculate, integrated additional hardware to allow twitch streaming (so there's no sharing of cpu / gpu resources)

if i was to just throw all rationality to the wind and just wildly speculate, then

hardware to allow the streaming of VR to the PSVR2 headset (it will be a wireless solution)
dual GPU's with the second one solely dedicated to RT (although the graphics pipeline would be a bit convoluted)
a second 'daughter board' with a seperate cpu / gpu to deal with streaming (see above).

or

it's a hybrid, that is in effect a ps4 portable in handheld mode, but a full blown 'bells & whistles' PS5 when docked.. (this is one i don't want, a jack of all trades, which the switch already does successfully and something Sony doesn't need to do).

What I am expecting is exactly what I want, more of the same, just more powerful. Sony don't need to mess with the basics. it works (and 100m + sales prove their strategy was the correct one). They don't need to re-invent the wheel. Let Nintendo do their stuff, let MS do their stuff, no need to compete with these if you don't want to.

I absolutely cannot wait for this reveal. The PS4 one was insane, I think this will top it once we see the games. Very curious about all the extra features and refinements we should get with this console.

As for the console design itself I actually really liked that mockup someone did where it had a grey/silver metal look to it. Would be a nice call back to the PS1. Black is sort of boring now even though it’s the most practical colour.

Hmm I don't know that I've ever experienced it. What about it do you not like?
I just don't like vibrating controllers.

Partially because I've never been able to discern any details in the vibration. That damn game on Switch where you're supposed be able to count the marbles in the controller? No way. It;s just a vibrating controller. The rumble triggers in my Xbox/ No idea. i can;t even tell which one is vibrating. It;s just a vibrating controller.

And vibrating when I drive a car off road? That's just irritating. I can tell I'm off road. I'm looking at the screen.

If some like it, fine, but let me turn that all off. I'd much rather they spent the money squeezing out some decent battery life from a PS controller for once rather than haptic feedback.

Hmm that makes sense. I don't think you'd be able to turn off haptic itself but I would assume you'd be able to turn off all vibration on the controller.

That marble game sounds like a trip haha.
