What is up with the amount of shit posting in here? Don Mattrick doomed the Xbox One for this entire generation. Jim Ryan has made a couple dumb comments but otherwise has made PlayStation into the powerhouse that they are in Europe. Anyone making these comparisons doesn't know what they are talking about.
People in here acting like Mattrick didn't preside over an extremely successful console cycle taking an unknown quantity in the industry to a undeniable competitor before his backwards ideas blew up in his face. I'm sure the man will sleep tonight if enthusiasts don't eat up his every word and dare to criticize him when he has been wrong.

He's like your dad's Phil Spencer.

I'm sure he's actually really great at his job. You don't get promoted to this kind of position without having some kind of idea what you're doing. I'm positive Sony will continue to sell consoles and software.

In this thread people will freak out because of an off-the-cuff comment he made about Gran Turismo once, but in reality this makes sense as Ryan is one of the main reasons behind PlayStation being a dominating force in Europe.
BC panic will last a few weeks, and then people will regain their common sense.

Don Mattrick was also responsible for the Xbox 360's huge surge in sales in the second half of the generation before fucking up the Xbox One launch.

Just saying.

This guy has made some tremendously boneheaded public statements in the recent past regarding crossplay & BC. Actually extrapolating that to the PS5 is some serious armchair analyst bullshit - but that's why we're on a gaming forum.
Just ignore they dont actually have a clue about anything.
Entire first page is "hmmm" because no one is informed enough to know what to make of this. Making a hot take or drive-by isn't as easy but you can still see some try to make an effort.
No, but that's what people are reading into.

Gotcha, everyone.

Wow Wario just tweeted this dudes hate on BC and indies*

Is arrogant Sony back?

PS4 ran laps around the XB1 this gen without it.

The dude wasn't going to sing the praises of something the competition had and they didn't. If/when the ps5 does bc it'll suddenly be something they cared about the whole time and what not.

Good choice, he's done a fantastic job for years in Europe.

What happen with Kodera though?

He played a part in playstations brutal domination of Europe and the wider EMEA region so I'm glad to see him on top. Best of luck Jim, hopefully you kill it with the PS5.

Ryan says dumb shit, especially about BC, but it's the old exec maneuver of shitting on whatever you don't have to make it seem unimportant. If they have it, he'll be singing its praises
The thing is that people on this board haven't been able to figure out the Jim always comes out to defend PlayStation on it's weak points then you combine the fact that most people don't actually know Jim's real job at the company.

Eh not a huge fan of Jim's but hopefully his foot-in-mouth moments were him just trying to explain unpopular policy democratically. I'll give him a shot, I definitely can see the great success that Sony EU is experiencing so hopefully he can bring that forward a bit

I'm asking why people in this thread are jumping to defend how incredible he is. I'd be excited for someone who has done things I admire to take the job, as opposed to someone who has made public statements dismissing features I care about.

Maybe read here:

  • Comment from Kenichiro Yoshida:
"Our Game & Network Services business has grown into the Sony Group's largest business in terms of both sales and operating income. Furthermore, our business in this domain holds significant importance as our growth driver going forward. At the same time, this industry is relentlessly fast-moving, and to remain the market leader, we must constantly evolve ourselves with a sense of urgency. Based on extensive discussions with John, I have decided to change the management structure of SIE to ensure sustainable evolution of the PlayStation® platform and further growth of the network area. Jim Ryan has been long committed to the growth of the PlayStation® business for the last 25 years. I believe that this new structure, where Jim will manage SIE's overall organization and operations, and which will allow John to focus on the key mission to further develop PlayStationTMNetwork (PSN℠) that has now grown into an immensely large platform with over 90 million Monthly Active Users worldwide --- will enable SIE to accelerate its innovation and evolution even further. Moving forward, I also have expectations for John to lead the Sony Group's DX (Digital Transformation) strategy drawing on his wealth of experience with PSN℠, in addition to his mission at SIE."

  • Comment from John Kodera:
"I have been discussing with Yoshida-san the need to drive SIE to the next phase in our rapidly changing business environment, and realize the evolution of the PlayStation® platform and further enriching the user experiences made possible through the network, which is an essential value that people expect in the entertainment PlayStation® provides. As a result, we have concluded that the best direction is for Jim to take the helm of the overall management of SIE, and for me to spearhead the network area to continue creating innovative services and experiences, where competition continues to intensify with many new players joining the business. Jim has extensive knowledge around the game business and industry, as well as deep understanding of the PlayStation® culture and strengths. I am confident that he will lead us to greater success as CEO of SIE. I will continue to support Jim by contributing to further strengthening user engagement, and to the overall growth of the PlayStation® business. I also aim to leverage my experience and accumulated expertise to contribute to strengthening the Sony Group's DX (Digital Transformation) strategy."

  • Comment from Jim Ryan:
"It's a huge honor to be asked to take on the role of President and CEO of SIE. I've seen the PlayStation® business grow and change massively since the very early days, and I hope to be able to put that experience to good use in reinforcing the foundations of the Game & Network Service business, and in evolving the entertainment that PlayStation® offers to its engaged and passionate community. Working with John and the SIE team around the world, I am committed to strengthening relations with our business partners, and to continuing to provide the ultimate interactive entertainment experiences that make PlayStation® the Best Place to Play."
Jim Ryan joined Sony Interactive Entertainment's Europe-based legal entity, Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe (SIEE) -- which was then Sony Computer Entertainment Europe -- in 1994. Since then, he has held a number of senior positions at the company. In 2011, he was appointed President of SIEE with responsibility for leading the PlayStation® business in more than 100 territories across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania. He also served as Head of Global Sales and Marketing at SIE since April 2016. He has been Deputy President of SIE since January 2018, and has supported John Kodera in developing the PlayStation® business.

Some of ERA being concerned over his comments on BC.

Judging from this, BC and Crossplay should be a slamdunk for Ryan.

Well, we care more for BC and cross play/ps classics than how much of a success sony has in Europe you know?
Imagine thinking that now Ryan will change the HW because he apparently doesn't care about BC. Or maybe he said it because they never planned to implement it this generation while MS was heavily betting on it.

Because people think this is a bad decision but when looking at what he has done it's actually the opposite, him being appointed as the president also isn't gonna affect BC in PS5 as that would have been a thing long before this, they aren't gonna just change plans this late and there is really nothing pointing at the dude being against BC.

You have just as much idea as the next guy writing "hmmm". Digital is growing, is bigger than ever for Sony, it only benefits them to have BC so that they can sell more content to new and existing consumers, and enrich services they offer by having games that you can download as well as stream. Ryan has made a couple of dumb excuses in interviews (certainly hasn't published press releases that draw out plans to not support old games on newer hardware). That's all you've got on him. Good luck with what you're peddling.

I, like most of you, thought this was a weird and disconcerting decision by Sony until I looked at his track record. He was the President of SIEE, which overlooked Europe, Oceania, Middle East, and African regions, since 2011. PlayStation holds market dominance in all of those territories. PlayStation is incredibly aggressive in Europe as well, so this seems pretty exciting. I hope he doesn't do anything to backwards compatibility and cross-play, but I personally doubt it. I have high hopes. This man knows how to succeed.

considering that report about how investors were disappointed with slowing ps gaming division, maybe a reaction to that?

If that remark is indictive of his mentality toward previous generations, then it's a fuck ton more relevant than calling it "an off-the-cuff comment he made about Gran Turismo".

Theres no need to get hostile here.

Many simply believe Sony won't do BC for many reasons.

You have yours, he has his.

Honestly I don't like this dude from the few times he has appeared in Sony's conferences and from the interviews he has given. Why can't we have Shawn Layden as president or get Jack Tretton back? I even like Kaz Hirai and Andrew House, but they decided to leave :(

Well yea but that has much more to do with xbox shooting themselves in the foot for the first 12 months(?) or so, and then failing on their first party content after losing the early lead. Xbox one didn't launch with it either.

BC, IMO is going to be important going forward more-so for Sony because of their fairly big first party catalog this gen
