This is why I love Jim Sterling. Recently there has been a lot of backlash against Waluigi due to his awful fanbase, but I think people are forgetting that Waluigi is actually one of Nintendo's most complex and lovable characters. The video is a good watch both for people who dislike Waluigi, as well as those who are unable to control their distaste for his treatment in the Smash Bros series. I particularly appreciate the focus on the fact that Waluigi is purple, as it is one of his best characteristics.
With all this buzz, I'm hoping we could see him as DLC in Smash, but we probably won't if the harrassment doesn't stop.

They should just make Waluigi into a boss to fight in the Mario & Luigi games

Honeslty yeah, that's a great idea. Especially if he's the main antagonist. Mario and Luigi games, at least from my perception, have really fallen into mediocrity lately. Highlighting Waluigi in the Switch one could be the advertising gimmick they need to really sell copies.

At the very least, you'd see articles on non-gaming websites about it.

A contrarian take to contrarian takes to a backlash, good show.

(I’ve barely followed the whole thing but I’ve always kind of liked Waluigi tbh. It’s probably Dan Ryckert’s fault).

Waluigi is one of my favorites, I just love a good underdog villain and his goofiness never stops making me laugh. Thanks Jim for giving Waluigi an episode.

Wario wouldn't hang out with that looser outside of sports

Wario got his own two universe

And no connection to walugi
It would be cool to have a Wario Bros RPG where Wario is trying to have a normal adventure but Waluigi insists on tagging along this time, and everything goes to shit. Give him Dark Shadow powers that get stronger when he fucks up/is humiliated and you're set.

Waluigi not making it into Smash and all the reaction to come out of it (the sad art and stuff, not the crappy tweets to Sakurai) has honestly propelled him from being a character I was meh on to someone I'm really pulling for in DLC now.

Is this whole Waluigi thing some kind of long running joke or are people actually seriously fighting over this fictional Nintendo character?

Are you surprised people are fighting about fictional video game characters on the internet? We've had somewhere around 5 or 6 threads that have hit around 400 pages that are 90% people arguing about characters making it into Smash.

I've been saying this for years, but Wario/Waluigi rival battles should totally have been a thing in the Mario and Luigi games a long time ago. Have them be a recurring pair of enemies that randomly pop up for boss fights throughout the game, like Popple in Superstar Saga or Jr. Troopa in Paper Mario, and gain new attacks and gimmicks each time. There's so much untapped potential to be had with the Wario/Waluigi pair in Mario spin-offs.

if Wario ever does get another game that's not Wario Ware, I could see Waluigi as a character you have to clear a stage against. He'll try to sabotage you by attacking if you get too close or maybe even throwing items at you along the way, then call you a cheater once you beat him. It's cheesy and cliche, but it'd be a start.

Waluigi is totally confirmed for Smash 6 or even Smash U dlc after what happened. It's going to be the next Ridley.

But wario and waluigi aren't a pair

They are only paried up in spin off games for partner roster reasons.

Wario is his own dude with his own characters

Waluigi is litterally a guy wario plays pick up games with at the mushroom kingdom rec center

I have a strong disliking for this character. Wario is okay though but Waruigi annoys me more than Mr Satan from DBZ.

Not going to happen since he's an assist trophy. Gonna have to wait for the next game, same way Ridley did because he was already in Smash 4 as a boss..
There's plenty of ways to make that work that doesn't require them releasing an entirely new game.
They could remove the Waluigi AT entirely.
They could have the Waluigi AT not spawning if playable Waluigi is on the field (something that is already done for other characters).
They could give the Waluigi AT a different outfit, e.g. the Mario Tennis Aces one.

"It wasn't until many years later after considerable fleshing out of the character that I came to appreciate Waluigi for what he was."

I'm sorry, but at what point did Waluigi become a fleshed out character? At what point did any Mario character become fleshed out?

Except for the fact that Ridley honest to goodness actually deserved to be in. He's an important and reoccuring anatagonist in the Metroid franchise, the closest that series has to someone like Bowser or Ganondorf. The only reason he's taken so long to be included was because Sakurai was under the belief that he wouldn't work as a smaller playable character.

Waluigi has existed for nearly 20 years and he hasn't set foot in anything that isn't some Mario branded spinoff. The whole point of assist trophies are to acknowledge popular characters that just weren't exactly feasible, important or relevent enough to be playable, so in that sense, it's the most perfect role for Waluigi, and that's what he'll remain as.

That is, of course, unless Nintendo actually bothers to do something interesting with him, whether that'd be putting him in a mainline Mario platformer, putting him in either Wario Land or WarioWare, or just flat out giving him his own game series.

I would argue that Luigi, Rosalina, Bowser Jr, and Bowser ( more so in spin offs ) became much more characterized.

Wario too, but he has two ongoing game series so, you know he kinda has to be.

Waluigi game with Wart Tatanga as the final boss.
FTFY
Imagine, Waluigi has to rescue Daisy from Tatanga, only to find out that she's a strong capable princess, saves herself from Tatanga and is repulsed by the idea of him even trying to save her

Or or or, you find out that Waluigi was really the baddie the whole time and wanted to kidnap Daisy, like
Braid

I've never disliked Waluigi, but I haven't liked the kind of meme status that he's got thanks to his fandom.

He's talking about Waluigi's personality and characteristics, not story-related fleshing out. Waluigi's grown into a bigger joke than he was in Mario Tennis on the N64.

He's an assist trophy though. Maybe in smash 6. When ridley was revealed as a boss, pretty much everyone gave up on him for smash 4.

Waluigi's character works more as a villain, he doesn't need his own game but he can be the big bad in one

Waluigi is the ultimate example of the individual shaped by the signifier. Waluigi is a man seen only in mirror images; lost in a hall of mirrors he is a reflection of a reflection of a reflection. You start with Mario – the wholesome all Italian plumbing superman, you reflect him to create Luigi – the same thing but slightly less. You invert Mario to create Wario – Mario turned septic and libertarian – then you reflect the inversion in the reflection: you create a being who can only exist in reference to others. Waluigi is the true nowhere man, without the other characters he reflects, inverts and parodies he has no reason to exist. Waluigi’s identity only comes from what and who he isn’t – without a wider frame of reference he is nothing. He is not his own man. In a world where our identities are shaped by our warped relationships to brands and commerce we are all Waluigi.

Wait who is playable and also an assist trophy?

Either way, sakurai has clearly made his point that he doesn't want to male him playable and doesn't care about the charavter. The miiverse post and now him being the example of how at's can be ko'd.

I would be pretty mad if Daisy was in a Waluigi game. Please keep her in the sports titles.

Complex? Waluigi is as one dimensional as it gets, all the "complex" crap are fanfic made on the web.
Waluigi has no backstory and no character aside being the mean counterpart of Luigi, everything else is made up by people online. You people are incredibly obnoxious, stop trying to make it look like the lack of Waluigi in a dumb party game is some kind of cardinal sin.

Not comparable to this situation.
It is. There already is a system in place to remove/replace characters that ended up being playable from stages they would normally appear in. It takes like 5 minutes of coding to put in a flag that says if player Waluigi is selected, disable Waluigi AT.

Waluigi is an assist trophy in smash u, sakurai doesn't want him playable.
The post wasn't whether Waluigi is an AT or not, because it is a fact that he is. The post was about why the argument "he's already an AT, he can't be playable" isn't an argument against him.
