Text:
Jill and I are keeping everyone impacted by the shootings in Atlanta in our prayers. We don’t yet know the motive, but what we do know is that the Asian-American community is feeling enormous pain tonight. The recent attacks against the community are un-American. They must stop.

Edit: For those of you who don't get it. Thank you, Poltergust and Lesath

I think we might have some ideas about the motive, and It's very American actually.

Y'all are going to be disappointed if you're expecting him to tweet on speculation and not wait until the federal investigation plays out.

The President knows better than opining about a situation that has nothing to do with him directly the day after it happened. And using the situation to segue into talking about gun control would just get people and his political enemies upset.

Best to have all the facts before saying anything definitive, while condemning all senseless violence, and speaking to the general inclusivity of asian Americans.

He says it in the same sentence where he highlights that it's the Asian-American community that's affected. I don't think it's meant to obscure that it's Asians who are being targeted.

Not sure why Biden is calling it un-American. I personally cannot think of anything more American than a racially motivated mass killing.

I mean, from the perspective of being able to state it flatly from the national bully pulpit, we don't. It's pretty easy for us to intuit as private citizens with an awareness of things, but the president has to speak to the facts as they're known currently. When the investigation inevitably turns up evidence that this guy is a white supremacist piece of shit, I expect Biden will say so. Part of the problem we had with the last guy was that he spoke out of turn and made constant assumptions without data. This is how it works when someone responsible is in charge.

I know what he's trying to do with it, but I am very ready to stop hearing Biden's "this isn't who we are" rhetoric. Of course it's who we are. It's primarily what we are. It always has been. That's the problem.

Say the words joe. "White Terrorism must stop" Enough with this "they" stuff and acting like why it happened was a fucking mystery when we just lived through and entire year of Donald Trump riling the hogs up with anti-Asian sentiment.

I get that he wants to acknowledge the tragedy to help console the families, but if he's going to play coy with not knowing the motive behind the shootings then he's better off not even talking about the motive at all. Just focus on the victims.

Really bad messaging there.

Y’all are really itching for the president to interfere in the criminal justice system huh. Remember how awful that was when Trump did it.

People in authority shouldn't make statements on motive until it's unassailably known. That's one of many things that made Trump so horrible. Of course Biden and all of us "know" what his motive was, but it's better this way in the 0.0000001% chance case that it's not racial. It'll all come out soon enough.

Nobody knows the motive, but everyone is sure that it is un-American and the murderer needs to be sympathized with.

It isn't what you know, it's what you can prove. There's no way Biden can say anything other than what he did because he can't influence the investigation.

Some of y'all really don't seem to grasp this

This. I know people are upset and at least half of the people hemming and hawing about “not knowing the motive” are gaslighting, but the President speaks with a loud voice and he absolutely should not speak on a motive until it’s confirmed.

I guess what I’m mad about it is that he even brings up the motive. Right? Like I hear what y’all are saying he’s the president and shouldn’t speculate till it’s iron clad but why even say that part?

Yeah, this. I'm not sure if it's wise to tweet on speculation on what it could be when the investigation's not confirmed yet, even if it's seemingly obvious. He literally talked about racial hate crimes today.

Do we really want the president to be tweeting about speculative leads? We had more than enough of that bs over the last four years. This is a good statement

To show that idiots like you and Biden are the ones actively perpetuating a system where white dudes get away with killing people.
What the hell are you talking about? As private citizens were fully free to speculate on why this happened. But for people in power, they need to be not also engaging in the same speculation, they need to be dealing in pure facts. Otherwise you get people like Trump who give little to no shit about the facts and just say whatever.

I mean the survivors quoted the guy as literally saying "I'm going to kill all Asians" I'm not sure what more motive you need at that point.

So not say anything and then accuse of him of ignoring it?
Here's an alternate way of phrasing his tweet that is much better:

"Jill and I are keeping everyone impacted by the shootings in Atlanta in our prayers. We know that the Asian-American community is feeling enormous pain tonight. The recent attacks against the community are un-American. They must stop."

Don't even talk about not knowing the motive, because we know it and he knows it, even if it hasn't been officially confirmed.
