Finn's character arc in this new Star Wars trilogy has tracked his journey to break away from the conformity of the First Order Stormtroopers and discover his own identity. However, the follow-up film The Last Jedi sidetracked that character progression, much to the chagrin of fans and Boyega himself.

"The Force Awakens I think was the beginning of something quite solid, The Last Jedi if I'm being honest I'd say that was feeling a bit iffy for me," Boyega says. "I didn't necessarily agree with a lot of the choices in that and that's something that spoke to Mark [Hamill] a lot about and we had conversations about it. And it was hard for all of us, because we were separated."

"I guess the original Star Wars films there was much more of a trio feel where it was essentially about Luke's journey, but Han and Leia there was a strong dynamic, which I think, I don't know how quickly we're going to be able to establish that longterm dynamic with [Episode] Nine. But if it's exploring that dynamic, then that would be cool," he notes. "I do feel even after three films still, we don't know them as much as we got to know Han, Luke, Leia. And maybe that's a great opportunity to get to know them a little bit more."

He also suggests his decision to return to the character would be based on how well they keep to that classic feel:

Like many fans online, Boyega believes in the themes previously established within the Star Wars franchise, rather than the focus on the realism introduced in The Last Jedi, and would only return to the character if the future story encapsulated those classic characteristics. "The banter, the bickering, the undercover romances that then manifest an epic moment. That for me is Star Wars. It's not hyperreal or realistic or grounded. Don't do any of that. It's like connection, family, friendship. If they're going to do it in that direction, then absolutely."

This is also not the first time Boyega has criticizes Finn's storyline, but it's probably the most vocal he's been about it.

I like the last Jedi but it doesn't service the characters who aren't Rey or Kyle at all.

Finn had the potential to be the most exciting character in the sequel trilogy. Great actor and cool concept done dirty in TLJ.

Can't blame him. They threw everything good away with Finn in The Last Jedi. He became an utterly useless character and if anything went backwards in character development. Fuck Rian Johnson and The Last Jedi.

Finn was done dirty. Let's get a poll rolling if people would rather Last Jedi get remade more than the prequels.

I can't blame him, the film decided to give him a Shaggy Dog storyline while giving Poe the meatiest character arc behind Rey.

Mods merged the threads but kept Bor Gullet's title, making it look like I don't know how to spell "disappointment."

Absolutely disgusting

Nah I agree with him wholeheartedly. I defend TLJ quite a bit but it dropped the ball on everything Non Kylo/Rey related. Finn should have been a Jedi/Force Sensitive

I enjoyed the last Jedi but I agree with him, they kind of ruined that character in the sequal.

I agree with what he's saying. I also agree with his other statement about not wanting a realistic/grounded Star Wars episodic films.

As much as I enjoyed TLJ, I didn't like seeing Finn trying to bail so quickly. It just felt so out of character at that point, especially when he fought so hard in TFA to save Rey and help the Resistance.

I understand I assume he was eyeing being a fellow Force user and didn't end up going in that direction.

Hopefully he's happier with his character's arc in RoTS.

I like The Last Jedi, but I feel bad for Boyega. He was probably sold a role as one of two new faces of Star Wars, only to get pretty comprehensively sidelined in the second film.

Yeah I can see that, he has to go to casino world to relearn the same lesson he learned in the last movie

Can't say I disagree, they did fuck all with his character after what I found was quite an interesting intro in the first film.

Finn was my favorite character in The Force Awakens. Shame he got demoted to a space janitor and comic relief character in TLJ.

Even as someone who liked TLJ, it definitely disappointed on Finn's front. Hopefully Skywalker delivers but I'm not holding my breath.

Not everyone has to be a Jedi, but I really wanted Finn to be a Jedi.

Still have hope for him with this final movie.

Even liking TLJ I would have 1/10th the excitement for ROS if I didn't love Driver's Kylo so much. None of the other characters do much for me, Rey is fine but it's her relationship with w Kylo that makes her so interesting to me

I loved TLJ, but Finn is definitely under-served. I wasn't a fan of where they took and ignored his character.

I mean yeah, the whole resistance ark was huge BS, including my boy Finn. So he is right.

the whole Luke/Rey/Kylo ark was nice tho.

That was a trend in last jedi, interesting characters with awesome actors like finn, rose and phasma, even bencio del toro, and nothing interesting, or even sometimes coherent, was done with them.

Wouldn't surprise me if one of the draft has him comatose for the whole runtime as an homage to Han Solo getting carbon freezed.

I didn't hate The Last Jedi, but I fucking hated what was done to Finn. A rogue stormtrooper who has inside information on the First Order and he takes a backseat? Come the fuck on!

They've really done a piss poor job of recreating that trio dynamic that they had with Luke, Han and Leia. The Force Awakens did a great job when Finn was introduced to Poe, and Finn's relationship with Rey developed very naturally and believably. Ah well. Let's see how TROS handles it.
