I considered it a very good chill out game. Just drive my bike around and do things, often spaced out or listening to a TV show or podcast or whatever.

The starting is slow, as others have said, but the game has some great moments and some pretty unique moments

one of my favorite games of the year.

trick is to stick to the story in the first few hours. you want to get to the 3rd camp as soon as possible. it has the best upgrades so dont bother leveling up the first two camps. i loved the game from the start so i didnt mind it at all but the story doesnt take off until you get to the third camp.

its also a very long game with a story that lasts roughly 40 hours without side missions. so dont worry about skipping anything.

you wont be able to take on hordes without an assault rifle and you wont get one until the second camp so dont bother. the second camp also needs to be leveled up just so you can buy an AR so just go to the third camp and level that up instead. if you come upon an AR in the wild, keep it on you at all times and just refill ammo. if you drop it, its gone.

The gunplay is masterful and in depth with the freakers being implemented perfectly. Magnum opus tier game and top 2 on this gen very easily, also incredibly creative and original.

I didn't find the second half stuff that much different to the opening hours to be honest. I've never really understood the 'first few hours are boring but it gets better x hours in'. I think it's largely the same throughout.

Awesome game. I enjoyed it all the way thru. The survival aspects are well done, combat is fun, and the characters are interesting even if they tend to make stupid mistakes. Would be my PS4 GOTY if it wasn't for Shenmue III.

Know that the complaints are insanely overblown. Know that the hype counteracting the complaints is insanely overblown. It is a perfectly okay game with a weak narrative, mildly entertaining gameplay and great presentation and that's about all it is.

It was fun from the beginning to me. Hell I got to the third camp "the good part" and set it down just because can't wait to go back to it.

This sold me right here. How come I didn't know it had Gyro aiming? haven't seen anyone else mention it.
Every PS shooter should support gyro aiming options! Sony should be requiring it.
They added a bunch of stuff with patches

INVERTED HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL CAMERA CONTROLS
While Days Gone did have the option to invert the Vertical Camera, there was no option to invert the Horizontal Camera as well. Now the player can invert both the Vertical and Horizontal cameras.

CAMERA FOLLOW TRACKING
Camera Follow Tracking was an option in Days Gone, but it wasn't fully working as intended. Non-aiming cameras didn't always automatically follow the player, especially if an enemy was in close proximity. Now, this option should be fixed. Enabling Camera Follow Tracking will now allow the camera to slowly follow the player when turning.

DISABLE CONTROLLER SPEAKERS
Previously, the only way to turn off the DualShock 4 controller speakers was via the PlayStation® 4 system menu. We've added the option to disable the controller speakers from within the game. Doing so will reroute the audio through the player's normal audio output device.

SUBTITLE SIZE
To make subtitles easier to read, we've added the ability to adjust the size of the subtitles. The options are small (default), medium, and large.

SUBTITLE BACKGROUND
On top of adjusting subtitle size, the player can now change the subtitle background by making it transparent or disabling the background entirely.

SUBTITLE SPEAKER NAMES
By default, we always display the speaker's name in front of the subtitle. Now, we've added the ability to disable the speaker name from appearing in front of the subtitles.

REPEATED BUTTON PRESSES
We shipped our game with repeated button presses for our grapple events. We have now added the option to change the tap to a hold. Now, players can hold the required button for a certain amount of time to complete the same events.

REPEATED BUTTON SIZE
The size of our repeated button icons can also be small, especially for players further away from their screens. We added an option for the player to adjust the size of repeated button icons, from small (default), to medium, to large.

EASIER SPRINT ACTIVATION
We relaxed how far the left analog stick had to be pressed before activating sprint, making it feel much more responsive.

TOUCHPAD DEAD ZONES
While we love our swipe menus, players can sometimes accidentally swipe into them. We've now added options to change the dead zones on the touchpad. Adjust the vertical and horizontal dead zones and required swipe lengths in the Touchpad menu.

This is only the beginning of our push for more and better accessibility features in Days Gone. We're still working on trying to implement more options, and will be rolling them out in the coming months. We'll keep you updated as we work on and roll out additional features.

Motion Sensor Function Aiming

This feature allows the player to make fine adjustments to aiming by rotating the PlayStation 4 Dualshock 4 controller. It is set to '0' by default (off), but when set to values from '1' to '10', the sensitivity of the Motion Sensor Function Aiming can be adjusted.

Auto-complete QTE (Easy Mode Only)

Turning this feature on inside the Accessibility Options Menu will now automatically complete all the in-game Grapple Button events without the need to press any buttons. Note this feature is accessible in Easy Mode Only.

Controller Dead Zone

Located in the Gameplay Options Menu, we have added the ability to adjust the Dead Zone for your controller. There are 4 adjustments (small, medium, default and large) that allow players to fine tune the stick movement to their liking, even fixing some extreme issues caused by some seasoned controllers.

Accessibility Features

UI HIGH CONTRAST COLOR MODE

In our push for accessibility, we've added UI COLOR MODE to help visibility and contrast in certain HUD elements in Days Gone. When enabling HIGH CONTRAST, certain key HUD elements on screen will swap color palettes to become easier to see and more visible during the game.

New Linear Option for Aiming

Some of you have requested a linear input curve for Aiming, and we heard you. This will make camera movement more one-to-one with the Right Stick input, instead of using more of the input range for smaller aiming adjustments. You will find this setting in Options->Gameplay->Dead Zone Sensitivity->Linear.

Our team will continue to identify and resolve major bugs if needed in future patches.

It's easily one of my favorite games of the year, OP. If it had managed to ship with that final coat of polish it would have ranked among the PS4's exclusives. The post-launch support, however, has been superb. Game was a labor of love, for sure.

Is this a major reason why it didn't review that well? I mean, I'm only a few hours in but it seems like the metacritic score is low based on my experience so far.

Game was a 5 out of 10 at launch, patches brought closer to a 7. It's clearly a game that should have been released on the PS5 though, the FoV on foot is tiny and the lag/pop in on the bike is awful. First 5-10 hours are very average, the middle starts getting good and then the game drags on for hours. To me the most interesting part of the game was the sound design and weather system.

I don't get threads like this.

Just play the game. Are side missions getting boring? Ignore them and mainline it. Are the main missions and story not doing it for you? Try some side stuff.

How should I play to have fun with the game? Finding out about this for yourself is a big part of a game's enjoyment.

Don't ask people on the internet how you are supposed to play a game before you've even tried it.

Its basically LTTP thread really. Also its normal for people to ask for tips before playing a game.

Just bought this for €25. Going to start it right after in finish Death Stranding. Everything about this game seems very mediocre / generic, but ERA convinced me to give it a shot.

I basically just played the tutorial section this morning (good lord, big ass install and a 20gb download). So far it seems pretty good. Mechanically it seems solid, but I will probably shelve it until I finish Jedi Fallen Order.

Thanks to those who provided tips for the early game.

It started slow and dragged with too many "go kill" quests, but it was still fun to avoid hordes and taking on whole camps of npcs who are decently smart (not great, but they do use flanking and bust you out of cover more often than not).
Then suddenly, after a dozen hours or so, the story really does pick up, and I am at the point where I am ok with the game winning a story award (Golden Joystick).

The game just opened up big time in the south after 25 hours ish, not sure how much is left for me as I hear the story leaves us on a bit of a cliffhanger.

Played about an hour or so last night. Graphics are wayyyyy better than I was expecting.(Pro) The animations are a little hit or miss. Gameplay so far is pretty fun. Just got to the camp and started the first mission and stopped there. The shotgun you use in the beginning is sooooo good. Love the makeshift silencer too. The environments are gorgeous. Will play more tonight.

Enjoy one of the best games of the year. I really, really enjoyed this from start to finish. It has a pretty good power progression curve where you'll feel weak and soft to begin with, but by the end of the game you're a zombie horde slaying one man army. I also liked the story a lot.

I want a cheap self-pressie to play over Xmas and I've been uhming and ahhhing about getting Days Gone after watching some reviews. It's a toss up right now between this, Judgement and MGSV. Bearing in mind I've never played an MGS game (tried 3 but found it clunky and gave up VERY early), but I do like stealth. I've played a bit of Yakuza 0 and liked it but found the combat dull and samey, I didn't really get far enough to see too much, the early game is very hand-holdy, locked off and cutscene heavy. But I like the general premise and setting, just need patience to get in to the meat of it, Judgement appeals for having VF5 in it also if I'm honest.

The idea of a douchey all American guy protagonist (what he looks like to me) puts me off, but if the story isn't too in your face I can look past it for the open world post-apocalypitc vibe (I quite like avoiding combat and sneaking around situations so if you can do that rather than go in guns blazing that's a plus).

It starts slow but when it picks up it never goes back. Going through the story will get you everything you need to tackle a horde, you shouldn't do it before the game introduces it to you. Also, upgrade your bike and your fighting abilities, you don't need new guns until the last two camps so don't spend money on that. Find Nero checkpoints / research areas if you want to do some side stuff, you can dramatically upgrade Deacon that way (health, focus, stamina). Enjoy, it's my GOTY so far (still working on DS).

The pacing of the game is bad, but I'm enjoying it so far. I think i'm about half way through and it's your typical open-world fare. I think Noah Gervais' criticism that this game is like a Netflix series is apt because it does feel like watching a show when it shouldn't.

I love stealth and really loathed MGSV (but Im in the minority). It always felt like you should have brought a different gadget than the one you did. Also, there is ALWAYS guy that you missed when scouting a base before attacking.

Take it with a grain of salt since Im in the early early game, but the game is already promoting avoiding confrontations if you can. There is stealth grass to sneak by zombies and you can toss rocks to distract.

One of my favorite games this year. Taking down a huge horde is extremely satisfying. The visuals are great and I love most of the characters. Really don't understand the super low scores.
