🧰 Latest drivers: (as at 24/02/2022)
AMD: 22.2.2
Nvidia: 511.79

📊 Benchmarks:
GameGPU (Russian; launch build)
Overclock3D (English; launch build)
TechPowerUp (English; launch build)

🎩 Tips and tricks:
Cap the frame rate/potentially improve frame times: Download RivaTuner Statistics Server (if you use MSI Afterburner, then you already have it installed), input your desired framerate limit in the "Framerate limit" box, and hit Enter . Alternatively, those with an Nvidia GPU can either cap the frame rate at the driver level via the Nvidia Control Panel (requires the 441.87+ drivers) or use Nvidia Inspector to force a vsync internal lower than one-half (click the small tool icon to open the game profile section).
Note: Useful if your system can't maintain, say, 60fps and you're sensitive to the wild fluctuations, or you're experiencing uneven frame times. The greater window the engine has to render a given frame, if you're imposing a lower frame rate than the game can otherwise provide, may also help in alleviating stuttering related to data streaming.

Work
Updated as of 12/3/18 @ 6:43PM EST

Currently running this rig
Ryzen 7 2700X
16GB 3000mhz RAM
RTX 2080 Founders Edition
Loaded off a 970 EVO m.2 SSD.

There's not a benchmark utility from the looks of it, which is kind of a shame. That'd make comparing results much easier to do. Anywho, I'm playing maxed out @ 1440p and am seeing anywhere between 70-100FPS depending on what's happening on screen. Haven't seen it dip below that, but also only been playing for about ten minutes. Will continue to update as I go.

Is it crazy that the non-standard editions had 24 hour early access but the day-one patch wasn't ready?

I'm hoping this is why I couldn't progress after the intro mission due to a broken level.

Ah. There it is, then.

Or maybe not :(

Just Cause 4 – Patch 1.01
Map update, including the display of "locked items", a reward preview for taking over regions, and reworking symbols.
New Game + option has been added
The control of boats has been optimized
Underwater visualizations have been improved
Additional tips for the interface
Visual effects on explosions, sparks, rain and burns have been improved
Vehicle destruction now has more stupid things
Various optimizations across the game

I don't know what they mean.

Those are from steam forums

It's a shame that this happens to a series which used to be renowned for CUDA WAVES.

(Just Cause 2 is the only game I'm aware of to actually directly use CUDA -- rather than through middleware -- for an effect. Was really cool at the time too)

Here's a little theory of mine, please correct me if you think I'm wrong: the weather stuff feels like one their initial ideas with the game basically being optmized/ developed around it.
When I saw some of the dev's preview videos showing how the tornado can pick up hundreds of objects, I said "nope, this ain't gonna run ok on consoles or mid-range PCs". So they lowered the visuals to make it somehow work with those intense physics calculations.

Got to say that this franchise is managed very badly - soo much wasted potential: they could've taken those ressources and make more structures destructable instead of having this 5 minute sensation.

2700x @ ~ 4150MHz / 1080Ti @ ~ 1960MHz / 16GB DDR4 @ 3466MHz C15 / Running from a SSD, newest Nvidia Driver
1440p - Max Setting - 45-90 fps (edit: 70-90)

Performance during the first 30 Minutes was okay. Game ran at around 70-90 fps. Arrived in the Jungle and performance can go down to 50 and below especially during heavy combat. Will test a bit more, but not long. 66 minutes so far and I plan to refund.

edit: restarted the game, played for another 10min and it is back to 70+ in the jungle... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The game is not finished. So many glitches and bugs.

For resolution scaling problems, use exclusive full screen.
To avoid hair transparent glitch, disable Temporal SMAA and use FXAA.
To improve surfaces blurring, force Aniso x16 in drivers.

To fix water sins, clipping problems, low res reflections and so many other problems, wait for a patch.

Sure it runs "ok" but holy hell this game seems a mess. Menus and UI navigation is a nightmare. LOD is awful. AA seems non-functional.

Max shadows quality means vegetation shadows appear 2 meters in front of you. 2 meters.

I'm talking about pc version at max settings. This is the PC thread.
The game is a straight up console port with nearly zero graphical enhancements over consoles. Also - JC3 runs and ran during launch just fine on PC. So whatever they did to improve JC4's performance on consoles have certainly made the game look worse on PC.

It seems more than that. There are things unfinished. Not downgraded.

Is this game having as many issues on PC as Steam reviews is making it out to be? I want to pick it up but im seeing a slew of review bombs saying it has a slew of problems.

The water, dear God, is ATROCIOUS. Im normally not one to judge a game too harshly on graphics alone, but why such a major downgrade? (I know, consoles.)

Water and their reflections are broken. Building textures lack depth and shading. Hair when illuminated looks disgusting (yellow). It doesn't look great at all, even at 4K. Some stuff does look nice, and the moment to moment gameplay is pretty good as well. The game "feels" good to play. Real shame.

There are parts of the game that definitely look subpar, but loving that it runs so much better than JC3 did, I'm getting a pretty solid 60fps on my 1080Ti at 4K w/ almost everything maxed. Also the addition of the balloon and improved rocket tethers is huge, played for a couple of hours last night and spent a lot of that just hooking balloons to cars driving by to see how many it would take to make them float, then dropping them to watch them explode, lol.

I have basically given up on the game after an hour or so. It crashes all the time for me and when it works hair and flora are constantly flickering. I'll try again after a patch but boy, this is one terrible version of the game at least for me.
The good thing is I can run it at 60FPS at the highest settings I guess. When it works. Which it doesn't most of the time

The problem is we have no idea if those settings are working properly. Some people suggest some settings are stuck on low or medium. We'll have to wait for the patch and/or driver update to know for sure what performance is like.

Currently running this rig
Intel Core i5 3570K (4,2 GHz)
16 GB Corsair (10700) RAM
FA2 GeForce GTX 1070 Ti EX
Loaded off a Samsung 860 Evo
Driver Version 416.94

First off, it runs a lot better than Just Cause 3 on my Pc, 1080p with every settings maxed with 70-80 fps, will try 1440p later.

I edited most settings in the Nvidia ControlPanel due to a reddit post reddit, but unsure if it helped.

The cutscenes are looking kinda bad and the flickering on vegetation and hair is quite noticable. Same with the water. I must say it does not impact my enjoyment, explosions are looking better than in JC3 imho but not as detailed. Controls are a bit fiddly with mouse and keyboard, better with a controller.

From high up the landscape is quite lovely, but moving closer you notice the aggressive fade in of vegetation and sometimes low textures on mountains. The LOD is quite bad as some others have mentioned.

To alleviate the ambient occlusion flicker, turn it off from the options and install the latest ReShade version and use MXAO. I personally use an older version of ReShade(3.0.X or 3.1.X) because I don't like the direction where it is going: lot more bloat and connecting to internet to check for a new version to remind you if you are not running the latest one etc... But MXAO didn't work with older version and I thought I could try the latest one. It works!

It's quite subtle effect but as a result the image is much cleaner than with the game's own technique. The hit seems to be around 10% on my GTX 1080. I also use couple of other settings to get rid of the in my opinion too dark image. The attached screenshot is not too convincing but it's more pronounced in the game. Adjusting the settings it's possible to bring the effect out lot more of course. Also noting the previously mentioned Nvidia Control Panel settings, I think only thing which works anti-aliasing wise is the FXAA because the game uses deferred rendering. SMAA from ReShade helps as well.

Image wise the game resembles PUBG quite a lot. Actually, as I was comparing the screenshots the more I started to think I can live without the effect completely...

Noticing some UI issues at 21:9 but other than that it seems to be running pretty well for me.

That said I would not call this a pretty game. I wasn't going into this expecting RDR2 level of graphics but this game seems to be 2 steps forward and 4 steps back in some places. It's very inconsistent.

Thanks to the patch the game now keeps crashing. Either while starting or 5-10 minutes in. And I am unable to send the crash report ... brilliant.

I tried all tricks in the book. New graphics driver, updated directX, reinstalled, moved it to another ssd, disabled my overclocking.

I7 and 1080Ti here, seem to be getting a more solid 60@1440 maxed, and ground textures definitely seem improved. Played for a couple of hours this morning.

So I saw that the save system is not correctly implemented and causes a lot of stuttering, after moving the save folder to RAM disk 70% of the hitches disappear.

Just yesterday I found that the remaining 30% are related with achievements and not streaming issues. Forced a firewall rule to avoid Just Cause 4 network activity and the game is fucking smooth now.

What a shit show.

I remember their DLC for JC3 used static images (think comic book art pages) for cut scenes even though they charged full price.
Can you imagine Assassin's Creed Odyssey pulling that stunt?

They are working to improve the water and vegetation shadows and antialiasing... two and half months after release.

https://square-enix-games.com/en_US/news/just-cause-4-development-update
I wonder if failing to recoup their losses was worth the decision to launch the same week as Smash Bros, all just to try and get some of the holiday money they'd be competing with Spider-Man, God of War, and Red Dead 2 for. Good lord, Square-Enix...

Good on Avalanche to keep working on fixes, though. They're probably on their way out after this game, but I appreciate that they're getting to fix the game rather than going directly into DLC.
