With the announcement of Half-Life: Alyx, a lot of people have recently taken the plunge in to VR for the first time and I've seen a lot of requests for game recommendations. I thought I'd compile a list specifically for PCVR to point to and give you some ideas. Everything here is playable with any PC headset though some will require the use of Revive if you're using something other than an Oculus headset (If I've linked to the Oculus Store, that's how you'll know it will need it).

Definitely going to second Elite Dangerous and Pavlov VR. It's not really made clear in the OP, but Pavlov is basically Counter Strike for VR. You actually have to pull off/eject mags on the guns and prime them when you reload. For the sawed off shotgun for instance you have to open it, dump out the empty shells, grab two new shells off your belt, put them in the gun, fling to close it.

Repeated exposure. You always stop if you start to feel sick then come back and eventually you'll be able to play for longer and longer (doesn't work for everyone though). Chewing ginger candy can help a lot too if it's really bad.

I got my VR headset only yesterday and I think it's absolutely wonderful. It's not a platformer though, very much more of a point and click adventure game with some top notch Tim Shafer writing. The story leads into 2 so that's nice too.

I built up by doing small things that helped. Put a fan on you while you play, the constant breeze helps. For full locomotion games, this sounds stupid, but it really helped me starting out, walk in place as your character walks using the joystick. Sucking on some ginger candy helps also. Doing this stuff and just playing regularly (never force it though!!!) and I can play full locomotion anything no problems now for hours at a time. Starting off with non locomotion stuff like Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, etc might also help.

Is a Valve Index worth it if it's primarily going to be used in a sitting position? I'll be setting mine up in my bedroom where there is next to no walking room. I was thinking about using a 16 ft USB extender to play it in my living room, but I'm concerned about added latency.

If you can swing it, it's still probably worth it for the higher res screens, wider FoV, comfort, and higher refresh rate options.

Some games with traditional locomotion have a vignette comfort option that kicks in whenever you move with the thumbstick. It worked for me but it lowered the immersion, so I tried ginger candy. That gave me instant immunity. It's really great. After 10-15 sessions of Pavlov relying on ginger candy, I felt confident to retest my VR legs. That's how I tackled nausea.

Best advice is check the ratings for comfort on each of the games. Theres a lot of games designed around just staying in one place, teleporting or using your environment as a form of locomotion. If you're playing games with 100% free locomotion, I think you can gradually ease into it by only walking forward and in the direction you're looking. In time your brain just gets used to it.

Theres basically 3 stages you can acclimate to.

1) moving forward and only forward and only at a locked speed. Most people are okay with this, we've adapted to it from cars and trains etc but of course some people still get travel sickness. The main roadbump is the initial acceleration your brain thinks you should be feeling.

2) moving sideways, strafing and other sideways movement. This is the big one a lot of people struggle with I think. I've got my VR legs now but I remember the first few apps that I accidentally did this in really threw me off. Had a headache or turned stomach in the morning.

3) total artificial, jumping, snap/smooth turning, flipping upsidedown (still not used to this one lol) and insane sprint speeds.

Fantastic work OP. There are a lot of amazing looking upcoming games as well. Stuff like Boneworks and Walking Dead Saints & Sinners (which is a full scale lengthy game). Could offer an "upcoming games" section to your list if you wanted to put in the work lol.

The only game that didn't feel like a tech demo is Skyrim, unfortunately, I played a hell lot of this game already. Is there something a bit like Diablo (with loot) that is fun? BL2 is still too expensive to my taste.

Theres optional snap/smooth turning. The main form of locomotion in that game is just reaching out and dragging your environment.

Best advice is check the ratings for comfort on each of the games. Theres a lot of games designed around just staying in one place, teleporting or using your environment as a form of locomotion. If you're playing games with 100% free locomotion, I think you can gradually ease into it by only walking forward and in the direction you're looking. In time your brain just gets used to it.

Theres basically 3 stages you can acclimate to.

1) moving forward and only forward and only at a locked speed. Most people are okay with this, we've adapted to it from cars and trains etc but of course some people still get travel sickness. The main roadbump is the initial acceleration your brain thinks you should be feeling.

This thread is highly relevant to me, thanks, since my partner brought up that she would put up half of the cost for a complete index purchase but as I sat down and started browsing the games that would be relevant to me I still couldnt come up with more than Alyx, Rez and Beat saber ;/ I wish RE7 was VR on pc, seems like the dumbest shit that it isnt.

So, dunno if I've just gotten better at VR or if Stormland has a good walk/run speed but I just played around half an hour of it and only feel slight discomfort (I wanted to like Pavlov VR but the free locomotion in that churned my stomach something awful).

It's super disappointing it isn't. I always figured it'd be like, a timed exclusive but nah, just not in the PC version.

Those are the best experiences I've had so far. Super Hot and others weren't that great to me. Moss is on sale on Steam and Lone Echo is on sale right now too. If you got the cash, give one of them a go. Can't recommend them enough.

Also, I bought Natural Locomotion on Steam and like using it with games with casual traversal, and not twitch movement. Like, it's good for Skyrim, but I got my ass kicked using it in Doom VFR
