I always thought Gal Gadot was horribly miscast as Wonder Woman but at least this time around she probably won't be the butt of some terrible Whedon "comical" moments.

Sometimes I wonder what is going on in Joss' head when he decided to direct the JL movie... Did he foresee the consequences?

It sounds like he was brought onto the project rather hastily. He was just there to fulfill the studio's bidding of a more lighthearted superhero teamup movie while throwing in his own questionable creative choices. Even if he was a truly great director it isn't easy to come onto someone else's movie and finish it.

Maybe he had a deal with WB for a Batwomen show. Even if he is the greatest director, which he is not of course, there won't be any good to come and fix a 80% finished movie by another director who has a completely different style than his.

I'm gonna wait for Moviebob's take first, he's usually my barometer for whether I'm gonna like a film or not, and considering he was one of the people who actively loathed BvS (and also made an entire miniseries dissecting why BvS was terrible), I'll only know if Snyder has really redeemed himself if Bob likes this one.
You could also watch it for yourself and judge it that way.

He was probably thinking, "Man, if I pull this off, I'll be known as the man who brought The Avengers and The Justice League to the big screen."

Like, if he had succeeded, it would likely be his name people talk about as the definition of modern superhero cinema, rather than Feige or the Russos. He'd be the godfather of the genre in a manner similar to a Spielberg or Cameron. Sometimes you've got to shoot your shot, you know?

I don't know historically people tend to look down on Age of Ultron these days as opposed to the latter MCU movies like Civil War. Of course these days his name is associated with enough bad stuff that no amount of success could have probably pulled him above water.

I don't think it was that level of self-aggrandizing, more that he would be able to come in and fix it, proving to WB he's reliable under extreme circumstances and pretty much give him free rein to do what he wanted. Which given he left Batgirl not long after, didn't shake out.

But given his history of abuse and narcissism, I wouldn't outright reject that theory.

Yeah, it's also possible it was more of a, "You're going to pay me to punch up a film that's already mostly shot? Hey, it's your money" situation. I mean, yes, these dudes are already rich, but apparently no amount of money can keep some people from pursuing an easy payday.

My theory is Superman Returns doesn’t receive the level of hate MoS does because no one really loves it. There’s a bunch of MoS fans and that drives the people who hated it nuts. I have a hard time believing that deadbeat stalker dad is more in line with what people want from Superman.
Yeah but that one shot where the bullet hits his eye is dope.

People shit on Kevin Smith, but I absolutely love the guy - he says it how he sees it - and he loves what he loves. I actually just transcribed this from his Fatman Beyond podcast, while talking about his response to WandaVision - cos it encapsulates why I love his enthusiasm so much. Bear in mind, its all said with a smile:

Kevin Smith said:
I put up a tweet where I was crying and shit, and I kinda quasi-quoted the show where I said "goodbye Wandavision, we'll meet again" or whatever the fuck - then of course, I put that up on Instagram and Twitter. Some.. many fuckers attacked me for y'know, being all emotional and shit like that...

My point to them was "I wasn't even smoking weed all last week 'cos I had the peridontal surgery, so I watched that show CLEAN bro". There wasn't a THC molecule bouncing around my fuckin' body anymore! I watched that shit just as crisp as YOU, or JC... fuckin squares, all normie, not fuckin' with the fuckin devils cabbage and shit like that... so I watched it completely straight up - so much so that you can never be like - "he smokes too much weed and cries at everything"....

So I was a hate tank without my weed! Y'know.. I was in the opposite position! I shoulda been like "Fuck this" and "Fuck her" and "Fuck all this" --- instead it absolutely captured my imagination, melted my heart... and so I was crying. I put up a picture and I was quick to point out: "Hey man, that's not even *high* Kevin Smith crying." That's just how fuckin' beautiful this show is. It was everything I wanted it to be.

And then some fuckers, y'know, wrote dissertations about like - you SUCK - and I'm like "yeah I know, people have been telling me that for 27 years.. but y'know, "Why do you think so today?". And their point Mark was that I don't have enough critical thinking to properly enjoy a thing... cos only with critical thinking would I see the flaws and hence not enjoy it as much.

This logic makes no sense to me whatsoever! They're like "Your problem is you like it too much! You need to not like it as much as you like it"

And their point was like, with all the Marvel things I like - like, I'm just not discerning. Or whatever the fuck. And now, just because I love a thing, don't mean that I can't y'know, fuckin' pick on it and be like "Hey, they coulda" or "this coulda" or blah-blah-blah... but that's not enough for me to change an opinion of a thing. Like, I found this incredibly sweeping.

Y'know I'm not just a guy who loves superhero shit. I fuckin tell stories for a living. I know how the sausage is made n' shit. So when you see ME caught up in it? One of two things: either I'm an idiot, which I probably am, or TWO - even the magician, gets fuckin' moved, even the magician buys in to that fuckin' act and is like "HOLY SHIT, what the... where'd the rabbit come from?!"... That's how GOOD they are at their jobs over there at Marvel.

[...]

Anyone can groove on this shit now. I just don't understand why anybody would be like nah-nah-nah - you gotta rethink this so that you don't like it as much. Why the FUCK would I ever do something like that? That's like.. madness to me.

So y'know, for anyone that's like "Where's the critical thought about it?" -- I don't have any. It's that simple. I love a thing, I love a fuckin thing. And this thing I love. And all these Marvel things I love. And maybe there'll be one day where I hit one of em and I'm like "eh who gives so much a fuck about this?" - it could be The Eternals...

[...]

I'm tellin' ya man, if you're lookin' for somebody to like - pull the strings - and fuckin', y'know, be REMOTELY well fuckin "I don't like it because X, Y and Z" - I'm sorry kids, I'm not the guy! I'm fuckin' 50 years old. The ONLY things I'll talk about are the things I deeply fuckin' love. The things that move me. The things I think are fuckin powerful. Now.. does that mean I love everything? Fuck NO. But you will NEVER hear me talk about the shit that I don't like. Why bother? There's no time. It's like.. reading that person's reaction, like "He needs to be more critical" -- I'm like "Why?". So that I can be as fuckin' bitter and obtuse? And not like something like you? Let me like a thing! I like it 'cos I like it! Especially, y'know, something well made

[...]

I'm sorry kids, if you want somebody to pick at shit - talk to that guy over there. He's happy! You want the truth? He can handle the truth... My truth is this!

[...]

Let me tell ya man, I almost died a few years ago? So I know one day I AM gonna die, and when I leave this world? Y'know what's not gonna make me feel good? Going [clutches chest] "Sure glad I told them what I fuckin' thought of that shit"... what's gonna make me feel good, I'm tellin' you... if somebody told me "you're gonna fuckin die in 24 hours", I would do a lot of things, try and pack a lot of livin, one of the only things I would make sure I do before I left this world is watch that ending scene from WandaVision... not the ending scene, but like

[spoilers ensue]

Appears to be midnight. The Kevin Smith hosted red carpet thing is supposed to lead right into it.

I can already guess Kevin Smith's reaction to this film.

"This movie was amazing man. Like, Snyder just absolutely knocked it out of the park. It just brought me right back to being a kid again, you know? My childhood was right there up on my screen at home man, it was crazy. Seeing Affleck as Batman again brought tears to my eyes and I was weeping like a kid again man when Superman comes in with his black suit."

Why are people so upset about a 4h runtime, then binge watch a whole season on Netflix in 10h straight? I don't get it. These streaming services let you continue where you left off. Just make it take however long you want.

Movie might be bad, but I just don't get the argument.

Apparently it's divided into chapters so it's like a mini series.

No one is complaining about the four-hour time simply because it's long. They're commenting on the fact that it is four hours of Snyder and most people don't believe he will find a way to justify the story in this film being something that needed four hours.

What I'm most looking forward to is reading deep dives listing every single difference between Snyder and Whedon's versions. Most especially how Superman is handled.

"And Darkseid dude - Ray Porter did a fantastic job. We've been spoiled a lot in comic fandom and superhero movies and shit, but seeing Darkseid - I have to admit - choked me up a little bit. That voice had me crying with my eyes and in my pants. What else is there, oh, and Granny Goodness - Granny Goodness is in a fucking movie, man".

Goddamn that man can still make the fucking best trailers...

There is a fantastic visual storyteller in there somewhere...it’s just masked and often squeezed out of the picture by, well...everything else.

Yeah, I’d imagine it was more about getting his HBO show off the ground than anything else.

Snyder's ability to compose and visualize superheroes and fantastical images is clearly amazing. He works with great DPs and storyboard artists.

It's the second anyone has to open their mouths, or those images have to then be coupled with meaning, it all falls apart.

The only thing I liked about returns are the 2 rescues scenes( the plane and the montage towards the climax) other than that it was very boring. I actually liked MoS outside of the flashback stuff

No matter what the reviews are though, am gonna watch it. Have been a long-time Reeves Supes and Batman DCAU fan and hope they get some good representation here

Also you know, seeing all these reviews for Star Wars XI and now JL, it's crazy how Infinity War + Endgame somehow managed to meet our fanboy expectations.

It’s definitely more positive than the usual Snyder fare and considering how critics usually don’t like him im more optimistic this will be decent

Sounds like social media impressions alright...

I'll give it a chance though, can't be worse than the original at least.
