Like, dudes, we're on like OT 37 for the Last Jedi, your hot takes on the movie are way better served in there.

Good character in a good film.

Some people have terrible taste, but to take it this far is just disgusting.

Anyone who has contributed to this should feel utterly ashamed.

Criticizing thread derailment because of TLJ plot point discussion seems valid to me, but a passing "Well I mean I didn't like her character either but Jesus Christ that's not how you treat other human beings" seems 100% appropriate and relevant to me, and it comes off as far too needlessly aggressive to try and demonize those sorts of posts. Like, what is actually wrong with this?

Cuz it prioritizes TLJ criticism over what the thread is actually about, Tran being driven off of Instagram because of her gender, race and physical appearance.

Also, "I love/hate the character of Rose" literally leads to thread derailment by relitigating EP8. I regret entertaining it at all in this thread when people started comparing her to Jar Jar and spouting off that they hate her or that she's shit. You said it yourself with the bolded. That's where it ends up.

Like why would we even be talking about that in a thread about someone being harassed off of the internet.

Yeah they’re trash but I don’t think this kind of thing is exclusive to Star Wars. Just about every fandom has a tier reserved just for this kind of garbage.

This is literally what all those people are saying, though.
I think people should be able to put their ego aside and speak up against online harassment without including their opinion on the movie being bad. There are plenty of other places to talk about that where it doesn't distract from, or worse, justify the harassment.

How? I really feel this is derailing this further but come on dude it really doesn't.

Nothing about TLJ should matter in this case.
I was referring to the guys post.

To reiterate, this behavior towards her is pure scum, I do not agree and it is completely unwarranted.

However her badly written character is fine to be disliked. As a 'character'.

The abuse is inexcusable and my heart goes out to her for that.

Because it's a major factor in why this even happened. We've seen it happen before with Jake Lloyd. It's not prioritizing whatever dumb opinion over the fact that someone has been facing endless harassment, it's recognizing that some people are fucking crazy and take whatever dumb opinion about a fucking space movie they saw way too far. The point that everyone is making is this: Regardless of opinion on a character, one should never harass an actor. The posts condemning that as "embarrassing" or telling people they need to get their priorities straight comes from those poster's own perception that people are seriously trying to make the thread about TLJ point discussion (Most aren't.) I don't really know if it comes from a place of defensiveness or a place of feigned moral superiority, but it's quite ridiculous. Again, these people are already agreeing with you that what's happening to KMT is fucking awful. Trying to assert yourself as higher as those posters is petty, arrogant, and missing the point entirely.

EDIT:
Rinse Bassfunk brings up a good point, too, that feels hypocritical.

But this thread has nothing to do with TLJ plot points or whether or not you think she was good in the film. Valid criticisms aren't what drove her off of fucking Instagram.
I loved her in TLJ and the hate she gets is overblown to an absurd degree

She doesn't deserve any of this shit.
Like you can't just get upset at people making the exact same point you are in nearly the exact same way as you are just because their opinion on the least relevant part differs from yours.

EDIT 2: Written before your later response was seen.

I think people should be able to put their ego aside and speak up against online harassment without including their opinion on the movie being bad. There are plenty of other places to talk about that where it doesn't distract from, or worse, justify the harassment.
Trying to dictate how people condemn something is strange. Again, I feel that the point many are making is that it strictly does not justify harassment. Ironically I find the posts with this mentality to exude way more ego than the ones you're talking about.

Did she release a statement?

This sucks. Why do people do this? If you don't like the character then fine but don't make it personal and attack the actor or actress. It's disgusting.

Fucking hell. She seems so sweet outside of the movie too. I loved her in TLJ and the hate she gets is overblown to an absurd degree

She doesn't deserve any of this shit.

TLJ got a lot people showing their asses though that's for sure.

I bet you there will be people in this thread who will express hate for her character too

In fairness, you yourself came in with side points about the film, fans hating on it, and what they'd be talking about whilst also condemning these shit's actions. See above, apologies for the quotes being out of order somewhat.

The “not all Scotsmen” defense, eh?

Sorry, but it’s time to accept that an alarming percentage of Star Wars fans, and nerds in general, are vile, misogynist, racist pieces of shit. If those particular assholes were the only nerds stuffed into lockers and left there in the 80’s, the world would be a better place.

I really didn't like her character in TLJ but shit like this is just ridiculous. Can' imagine how empty your life would have to be to harass an actress because you didn't like a role she played in a movie.

So people really now think that the actor playing is the "same, not acted person" IRL.
I wonder what the crossover is with people who needed those signs about the silence during the holdo maneuver.

Also appreciate the many users here who felt the need to qualify their posts with “She sucked but...” in this thread. Keep it classy fellas.

It's not relevant at all.

But some TLJ haters gotta let everyone know are every opportunity that they didn't like the movie/parts of it.

Every thread is just waiting to turn into a TLJ hate thread.

It's crazy how pathetic some folks are. She seems like such a nice person too with the stories I've read of her.

SW fanbase toxicity is too much.

Right. Take his Battlefield example. Those guys are assholes AND fans of the game, especially when they are going to be staying up to the wee hours of the morning playing a game while spewing racist and sexist vitriol. Those guys didn’t casually wander into a Best Buy and buy the game to spend all their free time on because they aren’t gamers...

So everyone keeps saying she's being harassed for being a woman and a minority. Is it because she is both a woman and minority?

Female actor Carrie Fisher wasn't endlessly harassed.
Female actor Natalie Portman wasn't endlessly harassed.
Was female actress Felicity Jones endlessly harassed?
Minority actor Sam Jackson wasn't endlessly harassed.
Minority actor Billy Dee Williams wasn't endlessly harassed.
Minority actor Forest Whitaker wasn't endlessly harassed.
Minority actor Diego Luna wasn't endlessly harassed.
Minority actor Donnie Yen wasn't endlessly harassed.
Minority actor Riz Ahmed wasn't endlessly harassed.
Minority actor Jimmy Smits wasn't endlessly harassed.

That said,

White male child actor Jake Lloyd was endlessly harassed/bullied in real life and quit acting.
White male actor Hayden Christian was endlessly harassed.
White male director Rian Johnson was/is endlessly harassed.
White male George Lucas (while fondly remembered now) was endlessly derided during the Prequel era.

Fandom just fucking sucks. People just suck. So I'm curious, the thing about Kelly Marie Tran (who was awesome in Comedy Bang Bang by the way!) is it because she's both female and a minority? Of course, let's not forget how much people gave total hell to lovely Daisy Ridley and Laura Dern who I loved as Holdo.

It seems to me if you fall into the female or minority category and play a character many people don't like, it's a total powder keg.

Leave this poor woman alone.

She didn't get driven out because people thought she was bad though. She's been dealing with racist and sexist shit for months, which is an underlying factor in someone choosing to harass her off Instagram. We already had somebody get banned in this very thread for commenting on her looks.

I did and I shouldn't have even mentioned her character, you're right. I was trying to interject some positivity before people started up with the same extreme/negative talking points. I didn't even realize that I did it. But my first reaction wasn't to voice my opinion on Rose, it was to comment on how fucked up the situation is.

This is ridiculous. I hate TLJ ALOT. In fact I hate it so much that it is the exact point that I gave up all hope on the modern incarnation of Star Wars and she was easily one of the worst parts of TLJ for me, but she doesn't deserve this. Nobody does.

People need to take a step back and calm down. Fandom is one thing, but this is not that. This is asshole behavior and straight up bullshit and needs to be treated as such.

I hope she’s okay, and I hope she doesn’t let it get to her.

Oh, I 100% agree. It's the same reason people want Kathleen Kennedy's head on a plate, but those same man children don't even know who the fuck Rick McCallum is.

Actress harassed off of Instagram

"Well I didn't like her character, but dang yo--"

Missing the whole entire point

Like why do you need to qualify your concern? It'd be one thing if she did something personal to you and y'all were on bad terms so hey, you need to clarify (and even that's stretching it)... But all she did was act a part you didn't like in a movie you didn't like. There's no need to add your mini-hot take on her role or how she played it in regards to her being harassed.

Absolutely, positivity is definitely important. Hopefully there are people reaching out to her in support to help drown out that negativity
I edited my post too, not sure if you saw. But I'm just tired of the hyperbolic negativity and people feeling the need to relitigate TLJ before caring about what actually happened in the OP.

This really isn't about fandom though. I guarantee you that the vast majority of Star Wars fans who disliked her character for whatever reason, didn't take to instagram and harass her over it
perhaps, it could be MRAs and other deeply unpleasant types, but there's also plenty of examples where fandoms have been horrendous and engaged in lots of harassment. i guess i just hate the idea of fandoms.

Anybody who feels the need to clarify that they hated The Last Jedi or Rose in this thread should get their priorities checked.

Anyone who prioritizes defending their darling movie over accepting that people expressing sympathy for the actress and disgust for this behaviour despite their ideas on the movie as a qualifier for their opinion (and to highlight the idea that no matter what you think about the movie and the character this is absolutely unaccepable) are the ones who are wearing their priorities on their sleeve.

Here you have people who are expressing sympathy for the actress and the usual suspects try to dictate how they do and make the topic the umpteen defence of the movie because criticizing it is the really unacceptable. It's bizzarre to see the TLJ Defence force being almost gleefully content of the abuse Tran is going through because it gives them the umpteen chance to throw vitriol at people who are critic about the movie. And that's the kind of priority that needs to be checked, honestly.

The only thing that matter here is that the poor woman had to suffer the attentions of the worst kind of fans, and "I hated the movie but your character wasn't the problem" and "I hated the movie but I'd still stand against the stuff you had to suffer" are perfectly acceptable messages of support, expecially for a movie as divisive as TLJ. Critics being vocal in their support for Tran is important because it shuts down the idea that everyone who didn't like the movie automatically hates the character of Rose or worse her actress.

Shameful. She was great in TLJ but Star Wars fans have become the worst group of MAGA anti-SJW nerds so its not surprising really.

People used to love this shit when Lucas was the target. This was never healthy. One thing is to find something negative and be vocal about it, other is to cling onto it forever.

I didn't see it either, but going by the Rogue One thread at the old site, I'd say her character committed the grave sin of being Asian.
There's really NOTHING that could justify this kind of behaviour, but as for "hating" the character I think the only thing I can think of (I'm not going to touch these people's "opinions" with a ten foot pole) is one particularly egregious bit of bad writing her character is victim of at the end of the movie. And even that is just "WTF just happened and how did that make sense?" innocent thing, not an "OMG SW is now ruined woe is me" thing. Before that, her character barely gets anything to do and is generally charming all around.

Honestly racism and simply mob mentality targeting the newest, "weaker" entry in the cast are the most likely explanations. A part of the people who didn't like TLJ have been absolutely toxic about it and it's not beyond them running a hate campaign against an actress just to keep throwing vitriol at the movie.

She also ruined people’s Rey and Finn ship how dare she!!!!! >____>
That's even more absurd. I mean it's so open ended that it could literally lead anywhere.

But I'm sure that if ESB came out in the age of the internet you'd have crazies complaining how shipping Leia with Ian ruined their Leia+Luke shipping.

So glad you qualified you position on the film and how much you dislike it I was curious to know how much you hated it before you called out how bad this all is...

The last bit of your post is all that's required really.
Um....okay? I was mostly just trying to illustrate that its possible to not like the role she played in the film or even just the film itself and still find this kind of treatment repulsive.

Because it seems that a large portion of the backlash stems from her role as well as other obvious factors. Not everyone who disliked the movie or her character are gonna agree with this kind of bullshit treatment she is receiving. Thats all I was trying to say. But sure lash out at random people who agree with what the thread is saying. Thats sure to work out great. No problems could possibly happen with that.

She has the terribly useless, badly written part of being a low-level mechanic whose gunner sister sacrifices herself at the beginning of the film to blow up a dreadnaught. Rose is distraught but when an opportunity arises that will allow her to be a hero, takes it up, wholeheartedly. She manages to drum up support for the Resistance on a Casino planet, and saves Finn from a suicide mission.

Real, really terrible arc. I mean who writes just dreck?

/s

Also, does anyone honestly care about Finn and Rey being a thing? I think the story is much more powerful if they were to just remain friends. That's one thing I really appreciated about how TFA treated their relationship.

I'm curious to see if Lucasfilm or Disney will come out with an official statement about this. This seems to be a bigger topic then whenever Daisy Ridley left Instagram (I honestly didn't even know that she did until today.)
