There's people whose first message in the thread was a comment on how people are prefacing their support with a comment on the movie. Just look back at the thread: BEFORE expressing their support (some even didn't) they immediately take the "disgusting that you guys feel the need to specify that you didn't like the movie, btw the SW fandom sucks and is horrible like I've always said!".

You have messages that leapfrog the issue of giving support to Tran and just take the chance to throw vitriol at others and the problem is people who post "Didn't like the movie but you were fine mr Tran" are the problem?

Look how many in this thread have started by saying "I hate the movie or character but..." I have to wonder what about the thread title brings them in to post that first.

And being positive about a persons role is always preferable to being negative in a thread about that person being abused imo.

I know you don't see a difference in that but I do.

I love Star Wars movies but I try to stay away from fandom. Just embarrassing.

It was more that her character was in a about a third of the movie and accomplished nothing and wasted everybody's time.
The whole Rose-&-Finn-go-to-casino-world-to-get-the-code-breaker-but-instead-save-the-horse-doggies shit was the biggest sin in a litany of awful choices in that movie. If you cut that whole side story out of the movie what would you lose? Would the movie be better? Arguably yes. Her character is no Jar Jar Binks but she doesn't add anything to the story. Unlike her sister who was great.
It's ridiculous that people are attacking her personally but that's what you sign up for with star wars.
If anyone is to blame it should be Rian Johnson. Seriously that guy shouldn't have been paid.

This reads like Comic Book Guy.

I'm sure he'd rather have it directed at him. It shouldn't happen period, but he was the captain of the ship.

Yeah I am sure he would rather have that, but it shouldn't happen period. I can understand movies can be disappointing, I personally really enjoyed TLJ but I knew when I walked out of the cinema, that this movie was gonna cause a rift in the fandom. However if disappointment leads to you actually be angry (at directors or actors) the best thing to do would be signing up for therapy.

I have never been as disappointed (with a movie) in my life as I was with AotC. That did not make me angry though. And I did not direct anger or disappointment towards actors or directors

Just an FYI, even if you didn't directly post to her Instagram, the lambasting that her character received on here for months is a microcosm of the hate she received on social media. Do you guys think your continued bitching about the role of an Asian female character in a Star Wars film was any better than what she had to be exposed to? I imagine she had to see hundreds of comments telling her that her character was stupid and her subplot was useless.

It's frustrating the lack of self-reflection that goes on here sometimes.

Honestly I think it shouldn't matter. I didn't mind Rose (honestly I feel like she's a good character, and she's just suffering the same issues the crippled Finn in the movie) and I absolutely liked Tran's acting and enthusiasm (she's been onboard from day one, she was super passionate about the project, you can literally see her enthusiasm which, as a fan, is all you can ask for) but even if she absolutely phoned in her performance and her character was the biggest piece of turd to ever hit the screen, this stuff would STILL be unacceptable.

That's an important point. How good the character or the movie is doesn't matter at all. Nothing justifies this. Expecially if we didn't like the movie we need to be vocal about this and make those people understand that they're not backed up by any part of the fanbase (and more importantly dispel the idea that since the movie is divisive, the dislike for Tran has similar traction instead of being the expression of people who are probably just racists).

Idk about that. I understand criticisms about the character she played but that's very different than harrasment. They're not mutually exclusive.

Guys I'd just like to say I absolutely HATE her character. Now, harassing the actress is bad but boy was her character BAD. I mean, again, don't harass the actress, but she was the worst character in Star Wars bar none. Just thought you guys should know that, it's very relevant.

Fanatics are something else. They can't separate character from actor. Regardless of what you think of a portrayal, no actor should be harassed over it.

It's true, these Star Wars fans are the fucking worst. Bunch of manchildren. We've got a few of them here, even.

Kelly Marie is awesome and Rose is a good character. Excited to see more of her in Episode IX.

This fandom is absolutely toxic at times. It's sadly not surprising that she's harassed. I'm surprised Rian Johnson hasn't deleted his Twitter with the man children who tweet at him on a daily basis.

The girl is too goddamn adorable and pure for this world.

Fuck all these so-called Star Wars "fans" that feel the need to harass and belittle actors and actresses because a fucking film franchise doesn't fit into their world view. I wish the lot of them would throw themselves into the nearest volcano to improve humanity by removing themselves from the gene pool.

This is exactly the same kind on replies Casey Hudson and other Bioware developers get every day... fandoms are toxic.

Remember that guy on here last week who called Rose a "mistake" and said she should be brutally killed on screen to fix it? Star Wars fans are bananas.

Why does this read like "I'm not a racist but..."

Like why even post in the thread?

She was easily one of the best things in the movie. The movie was awful in a ton of areas, but her character or performance wasn't one of them.

I don't think Indy is saying you're not allowed to critique the movie, but that some of the critique that can be found around TLJ is massively toxic. It's not exactly difficult to find people justify their distaste for Rose as a character by cooking up a conspiracy about how Kelly Marie Tran was included just to lure in the Chinese market, despite the fact that she's not Chinese, nor from Chinese descent, so unjustifiably throws shade on why she managed to land the role while also insulting the intelligence of China's movie-going market.

This kind of thoughtless toxicity dressed up as thoughtful analysis is just as much a problem as the mindless screeching of MRAs upset that the new trilogy's main character is a woman, and may very well have contributed to KMT deciding to make a break from social media.

Shame on everyone. It's one thing if you don't like the movie or character, but it's another to attack the actual person who was just doing their best in the role.

Anybody who feels the need to clarify that they hated The Last Jedi or Rose in this thread should get their priorities checked.
Why though?

Why can't people clarify they also hated the film/the character, but didn't feel the need to harass anyone involved on their personal social media sides?

Imo that is a good thing.

This is so shameful and disgusting. Imagine being so deeply pathetic that this is what consumes your time and energy. Leave this woman alone, god fucking damn. Reminds me of that one guy who sent death threats over a Marvel VS Capcom Infinite review and justified it by saying "This was the only good thing in my life and he ruined it." Good lord that is some wretched shit.

These self-professed nerds are so myopic and immature and violently militant; it's been said a million times, but they've become the exact kind of people who they claimed they were against. They are pathetic, vile bullies. And these aren't little kids on a playground, these are grown ass adults, full-grown men, who think that doing this kind of shit is a good use of their time.

The internet has done a great job of showing the world that nerds too can be utter bullies and monsters.
I'll never understand why so many people make the leap from writing a review/commenting on a message board/talking to their friends about what they like/don't like to harrassing people either IRL or on social media.

I have conflicting opinions about The Last Jedi but screw all the fans who harassed her. That is NOT and has NEVER BEEN OKAY. Screw those fans. Bunch of entitled whiners who gawk at anything that changes the status quo.

The internet is a cesspool.
