More "Farcry with Apes" than "Apocalypto with Apes", but I loved it. I love all these films. I want the next one right now and I haven't had that feeling coming out of a franchise entry in what seems like ages now. Like I'm looking at the next 5 films feeling excitement instead of exhaustion and that's such a good thing.

I have to say one thing that bothers me about this exact scene is it seems like the ape's mouth is open much longer than the time it takes the voice actor to say "day."

Just got out of the theater and loved this. It didn't drag at all for me and if I had any complaint about the pacing I feel like it's too rushed once it hits the third act.

I like how morally grey it becomes once Promixus enters the picture. It's like, yeah he's a dick but not wrong either. I was glad to see the movie lean into that rather take the easy route.

Movie was great. I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic movies with set pieces of destroyed civilization, and seeing the first half city that was crumbling, then the boat hulls on the beach, that was all so, so good. Then the last bits we see were great too.

The movie itself was a fun ride, though a bit long. Really, really looking forward to seeing how this all plays out over the next couple movies. Fingers crossed they get approved to be made.

I was a little worried going in but this was really good. Of the modern Apes movies, I might put it at #2 below Dawn and above War.
I wanted way more time with Raka. He was by far my favorite character. Both Raka and Proximus were not confirmed dead, so it's possible both could return.

I also think this trilogy's films will be close to each other in time and we'll keep most of the same human cast between films unlike the previous trilogy. At least the next movie will. Showing Dichen Lachman's character and the other humans at the end only to not bring them back would be a weird move.
Now I can't wait for the Zelda movie. As far as direction goes, it should be in good hands. I'm also curious if Wes Ball will return for the next Apes movie or if they will go with someone else to get it out faster. Or if he's already attached to the sequel and the Zelda movie is further out than I'm expecting.

Really enjoyed this. I like how the events of the Caesar trilogy have become myth at this point. Also enjoyed virtually all characters. Noah seems like a worthy protagonist for the new series

Love me the TLOU vibes with this movie. Hot damn, what a gorgeous movie. These movies always hit a sentiment chord with me.

We are definitely in good hands with Wes.

Heading in for my third viewing but this time with the fam. Curious to see how they'll feel about it considering how much they loved the last trilogy.

I feel that I read somewhere he is going straight to the Zelda movie after this so someone else is expected to helm the next Apes movie.

Just came back. To me, personally, the best of the new saga. By far. Proximus is awesome. The movie was a lot of fun

Just saw it, ranks with the trilogy imo. Keen to see where it goes from here.

Was Mae lying about her camp getting attacked? Think they leaving some Mae backstory for a sequel but not sure I missed it, or not lining up for me with how her "camp" and that base at the end sync up
Sort of. Proximus confirms that they originally found her in a group of humans that they killed, but I think she was still "fudging" facts by calling it a camp. She probably came from the bunker with a squad of humans and they were camping when they were attacked as opposed to it being a more permanent settlement. The way she looked at that herd of silent humans made it seem like that was the first time she's encountered them.

Yeah her reaction to the humans gave me that vibe too, I was all in on thinking she completely lied about the camp attack, but she does have trauma so yeah. Her seemingly not allowed inside the smart human base is interesting if she came from there, might just be unintentional framing as they wanted that walk up the hill and look at the dish scene. So just a bunch of mysteries for me with her story, hope we get more in a sequel.

Yeah I mentioned in another post that there must be a camp for the truly immune outside the base and it must be really odd having them and the bunker humans living side by side assuming that's what's actually going on. Wonder if they'll explore that later.

Yeah, it is great, and all the better for going in directions I never guessed. Some spoiler impressions

From the trailer, I extrapolated a whole general plot in my head. There would be a conflict between Noa's tribe and primitive humans. He would befriend a girl and discover they had some value and culture of their own, and would spend the whole movie trying to save the humans from his tribe and his dad, the king. Nope! This movie kept surprising me.

- shocking moment #1 -- brutal raiders kill / capture everyone and then say "for caesar." I'm like 😱
- loved the competing interpretations of Caesar's legacy and how important he is to this story.
- it's fun to consider how much of this civilization is built on James Franco and Caesar's relationship, like the window icon and sign language.
- loved the moment when Mae first spoke -- a shocking moment reminiscent of Caesar's first "NO"
- even more shock when she had full powers of speech (the clothes should have tipped me off, but they got me with her silent, primal behavior)
- another surprise when you realize that there are more advanced ape tribes out there; our protagonists are much more deliberate naturalists / isolationists
- loved that the three factions each had a compelling point of view. Proximus was not entirely evil and not entirely wrong.
- from the trailer, i did not expect as much exploration of human structures and tech. I'm a mark for post apocalyptic architecture
- another surprise to find there is a human collaborator just chilling with the apes
- mae just straight-up mercs william H macy
- love noa as a contrast to Caesar. Noa is not strong in the same way. He literally wins by singing, but he is just as much of a leader.

I recently showed the trilogy to my kids, and I'm just so happy this fourth movie lives up to those films.

WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY

I was constantly thinking to myself "Huh, this environment looks a whole lot like the city area of Horizon Forbidden West."

Anyway, I thought the movie decent but it took a while for the main plot to kick in.

Yeah...I just saw it and that was awesome.

Not sure where I would put it but it's definitely close to Dawn and War for me.

This movie shocked me more than I thought and if they do make another one I'm curious about it for various reasons.

I didn't have too much issues with the pacing, in fact this was a blast from start to finish IMO.

The movie definitely dragged hard in the second act but I thought it was a worthy additional overall. The visuals were crazy good.

I'd ranked the new Apes series like this:

2 > 3 > 4 > 1

I thought Proximus was an awesome villian, wish we had more time with him. I wasn't sold at first on Kevin Durand as he's always been a pretty bland and medicore performer but he really knocked it out of the park with this movie. That lunch scene was some incredible acting. I'm surprised I don't see more people praising him for this.

the way I read it was She was sent with a group from the vault to retrieve the hard drive from the bunker. On the way, they were attacked by Proximus apes and killed all except for her. And she is no longer allowed inside said bunker because she is potentially contagious with the virus.

Bitconneeeeeeect!
It was good. Nothing mindblowing, but I was entertained. Kinda in line with the reboot series.
What was more interesting that on literally the first screening on premier day there was like 30-40 of us to watch this. And one dude was escorted out because he tried to record it. Kinda sad how even mall cinema chains are struggling nowadays (in Hungary at least).
Also shout out to the chubby guy who clearly had some kind of mental condition. We were worried because he dropped his drink while trying to sit down and he got pretty worked up about it. In the end behaved better than your usual mall cinema audience, bless him!

After a solid opening the film slows way, way down, spending a lot of time with sketches of characters (the effects and apes look wonderful, but they've never been more thinly written than here) that just didn't invoke any empathy or interest. Proximus ending up very underwhelming as an antagonist (really missing Koba at this point), didn't help matters. Great effects team but I'd love to see the creative switched up if they go for a fifth film.

I thought the movie was really great, was particularly delighted by how nuanced it ended up being, where you could understand where all sides were coming from, especially Proximus

I really enjoyed it. It was a bit more of an action adventure film than the last ones, which I thought were more successful as thoughtful science fiction. This movie felt like it had more action set pieces than Dawn and War combined.

It had some really good ideas that I wish it touched on more, like Caesar's legacy being twisted into a pretty ugly religion. That's a cool idea, but the movie didn't seem to interested in diving much into it beyond the top layer set dressing. Same with the human side of things, the idea that they've been surviving, maintaining some level of civilization, and staying educated for hundreds of years begs a lot of questions and has a lot of interesting potential, but not much information there.

Overall it was really fun, but you definitely feel that you're not in Matt Reeves' skilled hands.

Saw this yesterday. I thought it was a good setup for a new trilogy with a central question on whether humans and apes can co exist.

I wish we see Raka again.

Proximus has a good characterization, but I feel it's probably because he doesn't do a whole lot of actually villainous stuff and maybe as such he felt less impactful. In a way it felt like they held back to not make him look too much like a villain. I wonder if he's not dead.

Just seen it. By far me least favourite of the 4 new films. Was boring in large parts and the characters aren't as strong as previous films. It wasn't a bad film, but a but of a letdown definitely. Didn't tug at the heart the way all previous 3 did. We'll see what the next film has in store.

Yeah, that's pretty terrible . Not quite Dune Part 2 posters level bad, but still very bad.

It has this great poster at least:

Kind of annoying that this and even the original teaser trailer spoil this considering it's one of the bigger character beats. The first scene of the teaser is literally one of the last shots of the actual movie lol.

it was pretty good, i only found the climax with fake ceasar anticlimactic... like you got this lame ass monkey alone against the whole tribe that hates him, and nobody even try to lift a finger... i know i know, fear and all that, but it's a bit too much when he's completely surrounded, they had to wait the damn eagles to do something.. And it was so obvious the eagle would come up at some point, but i would have imagined him to be a duel and the eagle helping at the last moment to make him fall, would have obviously worked better without changing much, like having the tribe being further away from the cliff, unable to help

That's a nitpick considering it's only a small part of the movie, but still

It's not like you'd know until you're watching the movie, and even then, an animal companion that starts off icy but eventually warms up to the main character is one of the most obvious cliches out there lol

It's not a big deal because it's a predictable beat but still a bit annoying. More so the teaser trailer shot than the poster considering that was in the back of my head the entirety of the movie.

One thing I kept thinking while watching this, all the old overgrown cities reminded me a lot of Horizon Forbidden West. A big budget Horizon movie like this would look awesome on the big screen.
I had the opposite thought rewatching the reboots this weekend. We get so much licensed AAA these days, would love to see someone tackle an Apes game

I've been trying to tell people since he was attached to the Zelda movie, Ball is like the perfect fit for that film. When you let those Maze Runner movies just wash over you, you can see a director who is: 1) Great with visual effects on a smaller budget 2) Still cares about the character relationships even when the script is screaming "PLOTPLOTPLOT" 3) Can direct the hell out of an action scene. It's the same trajectory as Matt Reeves, who leveled up his career with the Apes films.
OMG, did he direct the hell out of those Maze Runner set pieces. Didn't care about the story of those films at all but his direction and constantly fresh new angles for action in the series kept me engaged
you two are making me consider watching the Maze Runner movies lol.

at the end of the credits, you hear a sound that sounds similar to an orangutan, which was something they did for Koba as well, back when they wanted to give themselves a chance to bring him back. Add that to his relatively vague death, I think he may be coming back. I also wouldn't fully give up on Proximus yet, even if he fell 300 feet from the air into the water heh, his fall may have been slowed down/made less impactful by birds still clinging onto him by then

Saw this today and loved it, the visuals are on another level. I loved the world building and the characters.

I have complete faith in Wes to pull off Zelda after this movie.
