Kojima Productions has finally released the first game since becoming independent from KONAMI. Death Stranding officially launched two days ago on PlayStation 4, with a PC version scheduled for next Summer.

In an interview with Italian publication Tgcom24 published on the release day, Hideo Kojima had the chance to discuss the early reception of critics. While the average score was quite high, there were some low scores as well, coming mostly from US publications. Kojima attributed this to their preference for first-person shooter games, whereas Death Stranding, in his own words, 'flies higher'.

I must say that the game received rave reviews, especially in Europe and Japan. Here in the United States, however, we have had stronger criticisms. Perhaps it is a difficult game to understand for a certain type of critic and audience. Americans are great fans of first-person shooters and Death Stranding isn't one, it flies higher.

I always try to create new things and disputes and discussions are fine, but it must be said that the Italians or the French have a different artistic sensibility that allows them to appreciate this kind of very original product, not only in video games but also in cinema.

Well, yeah. You can tell by the reaction of the people that played the game.

gone home doesn't have any action and got wildly good scores. there are all kinds of non-shooters that are beloved.

game is boring, some people didn't like it. Stop avoiding criticism.

Didn't someone look at review scores for death stranding and US scores were a mere 2% less than Europe

Yeah there have been plenty of non-shooter games that have been critically lauded in the US. I enjoy Death Stranding, but trying to hand waive criticisms of it away as "it's not a shooter" is just lazy.

Didn't games like Journey, Flower and Flow get good reviews in the US? Not much shootbang in those. Suck it up and get over it, it's a divisive game that some people find boring and tedious.

Kojima really needs to stop acting like his UPS simulator game is some sort of revolutionary world-defining experience. It's a game about delivering packages where you fall down a lot.

Disco Elysium just released and barely has any battle and got a 90 metacritic average so it's easy to point out how wrong this is.

Oof, that doesn't come off well. Thought the reviews weren't even that bad overall in the end?

Come on, flies higher?

Pretty sure someone in our review thread here did the numbers (graphs and everything!) and proved that the scores weren't wildly different in any particular region. They certainly weren't harsher from US critics.

I just want to say everything pre and post Death Stranding has been very entertaining

Forget Citizen Kane, it's nice to know we finally have the Rick and Morty of video games.

They're divisive, but it has a great average. Some reviewers in the US loved it, some hated it, and some didn't like it but appreciated it. It kinda comes off like Kojima thinks he deserved a 90+ meta or something.

... the 2 games are basically sitting at the same metacritic score so I'm not sure this was the example you wanted?
Metacritic pulls from worldwide scores though and his claim is that largely American critics didn't dig it, which is true. Gone Home got a 9.5 from IGN, DS got a 6.8 for example. His point doesn't really stand.

The scores were pretty low in Australia compared to all the rest around the mid 80s
