Would be cool if Konami could resurrect Hudson since they own the corpse.

Or maybe better yet let outside parties develop traditional games with their IP's since Konami isn't really interested.
The biggest problem is not many of outside parties is interested with their IP too there.

I hope nobody think this is because they went pachinko only.....This growth has nothing to do with them stopping doing AAA games. They were increasing their profits BEFORE they got rid of Kojima. They more then doubled their profit between 2015 and 17 but they cant say the same for the last 3 years...And btw they probably included their operational cost decrease in the new profit....
Wut? Actually them stopping making AAA games is what allow Konami to focus more on business like mobage and smaller games. Kojima AAA endeavor not only hemorrhage huge money but also huge talent energy wasted.

Those who get invovled with the arts. Which should always be an anticipation.
Lol. you are underselling what real art is, if u considered MGSV is art lol.

I wonder how many at Konami have Kojima Tears mugs.

Konami sure isn't hurting without him.
Lol. Konami CEO probably have A sony tears mug for how long death stranding have been going lol.

And to think everyone ridiculed them for this:

Bet it was the most profitable Silent Hill game.

I am interested in the games they're working on going forward as they aren't abandoning the business, but it is obvious it's not a priority for them.

3 of almost nothing but walking around gameplay video...... the game will probably launched as cross release with ps5 at this point of time.
Yes, because the game is still in development.

At the point of the first E3 reveal Kojima only joined 6 months earlier. There’s no way anyone could pump out a big Budget game in 2 years

I'm just here waiting for Suikoden mobage, but I know Konami realized how ultra competitive RPG mobile game is, so it will probably never happen :(

WHERE IS SUIKODEN VI KONAMI?
Dead because suiko V flop and no one like Suikoden.

So. Big money sinks project that dont suit Konami at all then. It is still to see if Kojima project there will be a very profitable venture for Sony atm.

Sony probably doesn't care as much about the project profitability as Konami does.
Kojima bring in his rabbid fans and critically acclaimed title that gives Playstation headline news.
Sony makes more money from 3rd party software and PSN.
They may as well treat the project as "cheap marketing expense".

I know this is a joke, but taking a look at it seriously for a moment:

Metal Gear Solid 2 was estimated to have cost 10 million back in 2001 and took a bit over two years to make. It ended up selling over 7 million copies. Metal Gear Solid V cost over 80 million in 2015 and took 4 years to make and was still considered "incomplete". It shipped over 6 million copies.

That's why Konami gave up on high end console development. The mobile and pachinko games they make now can be pushed out at a fraction of the cost in a fraction of the time and make just as much, if not more, money. Their reprehensible treatment of their employees and Kojima deserves all the criticism it gets and fuck the executives for doing that, but from a business perspective It just wasn't worth it to them to continue HD game development in its current format.
You can make the same argument for every single high end video game company today. The difference is that other companies are actually smart about their console and game development business. Konami was completely idiotic. It's totally possible to have a high end gaming division in conjunction with their mobile and gambling businesses.

Yeah, like it or not their move to mobile/pachinko was smart for the company business wise. The pachinko stuff with the Erotic Castlevania was really stupid though and not fitting of the series at all, but some of their machines are actually super cool. Better for them take a safe route than be like Irem and collapse and do literally nothing with their own dev teams (they hardly ever license out their stuff for new games these days). Their mobile games are shockingly solid too. Duel Links got me back into YGO games for the first time in a decade (and I wanna buy the Switch game as a result) and Pixel Puzzle Collection should be a must download on anyone's device since it's been my go-to for college break sessions, so their mobile team has talent. The compilations coming out are also super cool and give me hope for more future console support.

Really the only major complaints I have is that they're making PES the next Metal Gear by shoving it in everyone's faces and milking it as much as they can. Yearly releases of the same game with little else new besides Bomberman/Survive/Baseball is really disappointing and they really need to give it a rest like with Metal Gear before they make the MG Survive of the PES series.

I'm REALLY hoping they can finally unleash the Hudson IPs from their rest and bring out a bunch of super awesome Hudson collections/revivals. I'd be overjoyed if they made a TG16 Collection or a Bomberman R sequel!

Yes, they could have gone that route. But it was an investment far larger than they willing to make. Capcom is basically pulling out of Pachinko ("downsizing and withdrawing from unprofitable divisions" as they call it) for the same reason: they COULD make as much money as Konami, but it just isn't worth the investment for them to reach that point.

Honestly I'd be content with M2 doing ports of Konami's classics. M2's work on Phantasy Star is exemplary and the Rebirth games are under-rated.

Most dev studios aren't dominated by a creative lead sucking up $80 million to make a single blockbuster game. Most similar companies also don't have footprints in other industries ranging from casino amusement to to health clubs, either.

Konami could cut back on their game development because they have other ventures that are doing well for them. Sating Kojima's Hollywood dreams also isn't necessary for the company to be successful at video games.

Wasn't video games their number #1 reason for existing as a company? If so why the fuck aren't they making shit people want like most developers out there? They like profits so why not profit even more by giving people what they want? I don't get it.

Nintendo was originally a playing card company. Now playing cards make up a tiny percentage of their business.

amazon started as a book store. 3M started as a sand paper merchant. ect

businesses evolve into other things. being a traditional games company just wasn't in the cards for Konami

Companies evolving is common, yes but I guess it's hard to take in especially from KONAMI. They should just sell off their IPs and let other people create with them.

No True Scotsman, amirite?
Anyway, MGS was clearly a labor of love by Kojima and an expression of his own ideas from game design to nuclear war. What gives you the authority to decide what isn't art?
I never considered any games as art anyway. But i am just feeling funny that an incomplete game can be considered as art lol.

There is many way to do business and Konami find the one suite them the most is the one without high end gaming.

They still provide A to B game division. Some old port is also coming. Their mobile and arcade division is fantastic. And gambling is thriving. There is simply 0 reason for Konami to return to their money bleeding formula during Kojima era when they are literally making more every year.

No successful companies sold their IP bro. Those Ips is company assets that can be used as leverage when they are in trouble. And considering currently how great they are doing, why should they do such brain dead business moves?

Also, to answer your first question on why they dont make shit people wants? They are actually making shits that people want which is why they are racking all their money.

They are only seen as not making what people want from the eyes of AAA gaming junkies. The masses simply enjoy their products.

gaming is still young. Konami is just the first big name to move on from it as their bread and butter, and many will follow. like by the time you're 60 capcom and square may be selling smart watch accessories or something, and several new publishers with beloved IPs will have filled the interim

it sucks, konami was my favorite. but just the way it is.

What do the categories represent, exactly?

I assume "games and systems" is their "core" games, and "digital entertainment" is their mobile stuff? "Amusement" is... pachinko? And "sports"... their fitness clubs?

Selling IPs is stupid... but how about licensing those IP to other, willing companies?

Like SEGA did with Bayonetta?

That way they can sit back and just take their cut, while someone else bears the costs of their own volition.

i think sega essentially gave nintendo bayonetta, maybe they got something in return but not much

thing with IP licensing is there's not much financial incentive on Konami's end unless the games go on to sell like GTAV or something

They have before. They licensed Momotaro Dentetsu to Nintendo for the 3DS before. I dunno if they'll do this for some of their bigger IPs, but I wouldn't be opposed to them handling some of their IP this way.

As far as I can tell from the PDFs:
Digital Entertainment = video games, including Pro Evo and mobile stuff like Yu Gi Oh Duel Links
Amusement - arcade games like Dance Dance Revolution
Gaming & Systems = casino stuff
Sports = fitness programs, such as table tennis school, as well as sports products

Honestly I'm fine with Konami being out of AAA game development and making a killing in their many other ventures but they should do more ports and remasters of their old games at least. Metal Gear Solid The Legacy Collection would make money.

What do you mean WUT ? Look at the numbers, forget the business statement (made for the shareholders..), look at the numbers! The growth was higher before the change ! Doing AAA games has nothing to do with focusing on Pachinko... it is completely separate and not related. With the way they treat their employees and everything else, they MUST rot in hell !

Again. Wut??? Konami leaving AAA focus industry is what lead to the company workforce free to do other business like Mobage which is multiple times more successful than MGS.

And pachinko is not even that relevant here as literally the number shows, it is the move to mobage and smaller scale games that lead Konami into such success.

Also, prepare to curse literally all gaming companies for their treatment of employees k?
