Welcome to the Korean dramas & movies OT! This is an all-purpose thread for Korean dramas & movies discussion of past, present, and upcoming shows, as well as actors and actresses…etc.

New and confused? Here a little introduction:

Korean dramas or K-dramas are television dramas made in South Korea, they are popular worldwide, partially due to the spread of Korean popular culture (the "Korean Wave"), and are available through streaming services that offer multiple language subtitles. They have received adaptations throughout the world, and have had a cultural impact on other countries.

These are 2017 most watched shows in Korea:

Guardian: The Lonely and Great God: Fantasy/Drama

f1l87cI.png

In ancient times, Kim Shin is an unbeatable general in wars cursed to become a goblin and remain immortal for hundreds of years unless he meets his bride. Ji Eun Tak is orphaned at a young age live with her abusive aunt and possess the power of seeing spirits, she accidentally summons the goblin and so their journey begin.

Strong Girl Bong-soon: Action/Comedy

D7A49I2.png

Do Bong-soon was born with superhuman strength, her dream however is to create a video game with herself as the main character. Coincidently, she gets the job of a bodyguard to a rich heir Ahn Min-hyuk, the CEO of a gaming company who has recently received anonymous threats, blackmails, and even been stalked at an occasion.

Stranger: Crime/Drama

tQ5oj5A.png

Hwang Shi-Mok is prosecutor who had brain surgery when he was a child, which caused him to lack emotion. He is also one of the only prosecutors not involved in corruption. A passionate and warm-hearted Police Lieutenant Han Yeo-Jin meet him at a murder crime scene and team up to eradicate corruption at the prosecutor's office and solve a serial murder case.

Tunnel: Thriller/Crime

wG5dUlU.png

These are my personal favorites, I strongly recommend you to give them a go. Trust me and you won't regret it.

Reply 1988 (2016 N°1 most watched in Korea): Family/Slice of life

sh0FnYj.png

Times may have been a little simpler, less technological, but still just as challenging to get through a typical day of life in the late 1980s. Five childhood friends, who all live in the same Ssangmundong neighborhood of Seoul, lean on each other to survive their challenging teen years and set a path for their futures.

Note: This is hands down the best & emotionally heavy Korean slice of life I have ever seen, the characters are well written and attaching, the dialogues feel as real as you can get from a TV show, the emotions are so well translated that you may laugh and cry at various events. Honestly, I have never loved a drama as much as I loved this one.

Fight My Way: Slice of Life/Romance

7ShacDa.png

Do dreams always come true?

Ko Dong Man has always dreamed of becoming famous as a taekwondo athlete, his bickering longtime friend, Choi Ae Ra, aspires to become a television anchor and the gentle Baek Seol Hee always wanted to get married and have children. Can these friends achieve their individual dreams despite having "third-rate" qualifications? Follow them as they grow up and face adult life.

Note: Real life isn't easy and it's even harder if you want to achieve your dreams while not having the means to do it, this show portrays our everyday struggle in a realistic and heartwarming way.

Oh My Venus: Comedy/Romance

IxBoPlG.png

Kang Joo Eun was envied by every girl and desired by every boy in high school as the "Daejeon Venus" because of her pretty face and killer figure. At age 33, she has achieved her professional goals but let herself go over the years and is now overweight and often disregarded and overlooked by society and her coworkers.

Yeong Ho is a celebrity personal trainer who is involved in a scandal in the United States and forced to flee to Korea until things cool down. Can he overcome his childhood trauma and fulfill his family wishes? Or will he continue to run away from his responsibilities?

Note: You enjoy comedies? You enjoy a good fluffy romance? Give this drama a go. (As an aside the main actress started the dimple trend in Korean and now most celebrities created one)

List of highest-grossing films in South Korea:

The Admiral Roaring Currents: War/Drama

6dtTx6u.png

Movie depicts the Battle of Myeongryang which took place October 26, 1597. The battle involved Admiral Yi Sun-Shin, who had only 12 ships under his command, against the Japanese navy which had over a hundred ships.

Along with the Gods The Two Worlds: Action/Fantasy

xVOuLAo.png

Following a person's, a death, an Angel of Death escorts the deceased to the afterworld. There, the deceased person has 7 trials over a period of 49 days. At that time, the Angel of Death, who are not supposed to get involved in human affairs, unavoidably take part in human affairs.

Ode to My Father: Drama

5WJNUfN.png

During the Hungnam Evacuation of 1950 in the Korean War, when thousands of refugees in what would become North Korea were transported south by U.S. Navy boats,

Amid the time of Korean War, a young boy's vow to take care of his family marked the beginning of a lifelong promise spanning 60 years.

Well-received movies internationally:

Train to Busan: Action/Horror

NilXWR7.png

Train to Busan delivers a thrillingly unique -- and purely entertaining -- take on the zombie genre, with fully realized characters and plenty of social commentary to underscore the bursts of skillfully staged action.

The Handmaiden: Drama/Mystery

KdvgchN.png

The Handmaiden uses a Victorian crime novel as the loose inspiration for another visually sumptuous and absorbingly idiosyncratic outing.

A gripping and sensual tale of two women - a young Japanese Lady living on a secluded estate, and a Korean woman who is hired to serve as her new handmaiden, but is secretly plotting with a conman to defraud her of a large inheritance.

Personal recommendation:

As One: Drama/Sport/Real story

ES5tdtk.png

A month before the 1991 World Table Tennis Championships in Chiba, Japan, North Korea and South Korea make the unprecedented decision to form one team for the competition.

When the two teams meet up at the training camp in Chiba, the members clash in every way possible, including practice styles. The top player on the North Korean team, Lee Boon Hee, has no patience for Jung Hwa. Can the united Korean team learn to get along long enough to compete for the gold?

Don't new (aka not OT2/3/etc) OTs normally get posted in the main forum to gain traction first?

Either way, threads on my watch list now :)

Currently watching Let's Eat. Pretty good stuff.

Put it in main forum. Nice thread

Thank you :D

To answer you, I actually contacted PlanetSmasher who is a mod before posting this thread to ask on the where I should put it and it was confirmed that it is supposed to be in hangout.

Currently watching Let's Eat. Pretty good stuff.

I can certainly edit the thread and make the movies included in it, what do you think?

Speaking of horror movies, have you watched "The Wailing"? It was very enjoyable and somewhat inception-y.

I loved Goblin

mainly for the plot and character interactions, and also how it pulled at your emotions

what are some of y'alls recommendations for dramas like that, I am completely foreign to most K-Dramas

That's alright, hah. Did not mean to derail. :)

I loved the Wailing, quite a unique tone. But again, most of the K-horror has different gimmicks.

The closest drama to Goblin that I watched and can recommend is : While You Were Sleeping

I don't want to spoil the plot but here a short synopsis :
Hong-Joo lives with her mother and helps her run a pork restaurant. She is haunted by premonition dreams. What's worse is that she does not know when the tragedy is going to happen. One night, she dreams about the death of her own mother.

I am open to suggestions :) thus I just edited the OP and the second post to add movies!! Can you please change the title to "Korean dramas & movies |OT1| Attack of the dimples" ?

Just completed a viewing of the classic, Coffee Prince, and I was actually pretty shocked at how progressive it was, especially for 2007.

Now I'm going through I'm Not a Robot, which apparently did pretty poor in the Korean ratings but is actually pretty cute and fluffy. The concept is really out there, though!

Would we also be able to talk about k-variety in here, or would that need its own thread? Been addicted to a lot of shows on that end (especially Running Man), but I don't want to discuss them unless it's appropriate.

Done.

About k-drama. I really enjoyed The Craving and Schoolgirl Detectives on Netflix.

The Craving was really down to Earth and somewhat relateable. The latter was hilarious.

I finished "I'am not a robot" and it's a decent, funny and fluffy drama, I liked it and I am kinda surprised it didn't do well to be honest?! There are worst shows out there that became huge.

PS: Feel free to discuss variety shows, I personally don't mind :)

Thank you!

Schoolgirl Detectives have been in my backlog for a while (because I am not a big fan of high school settings), but perhaps it's time to give it a chance while waiting for the current dramas' season to pick-up.

I don't remember specific cases, but the girls have great chemistry. Was fun to see them playing off each other.

Goblin is amazing. All around amazing show. <3

As for something similar to it...I'll recommend It's Okay, That's Love and Master's Sun. Both shows pulled at my emotions very effectively and had some pretty damn amazing characters so I'm recommend them based on that than any similarities plot-wise. They evoked similar feelings in me and Master's Sun even has that supernatural angle going for it. Master's Sun even revived my interest in Kdramas after a lull of two years. It was easily my favorite drama of 2013.

Yoooo! I'm a KDrama vet. I've watched hundreds of them, even to the point where I would watch a few episodes daily...I stopped watching them as I felt they were too formulaic and predictable, even though I loved them. I'm sure there are many great current dramas, but I can't bring myself to watch them. I dunno, just rambling I guess.

I have to say that Bad Guyand IRISare some of my absolute favorite KDramas. I recommend them if you're into thriller/suspenseful dramas.

Depending on the genre you watch honestly, if it's oriented on romance then yes it is as formulaic as it can get, be it for K-dramas or western movies/shows and books.

However, crime, thrillers, slice of life and anything that don't have romance as the forefront are better suited for originality. They may certainly have a "happy" ending but what popular show doesn't (even game of thrones may end up with one)?

I can recommend reply 1988 and while the premise is akin to a deeper and more emotional "How I met your mother" kind of plot, it is not about the romance per se but more of a commentary of Koreans life in that era which is so much different than what we see nowadays.

Tunnel is a mystery/crime where a romance is just a footnote rather than the focus and is worth checking out.

If you want pure emotions with amazing characters than check out Reply 1988 (2016 N°1 most watched in Korea) too.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In other news, I watched "Because this is our first life" and was truck by the concept of going against the Korean's value regarding the expectations put on by your parents and in-laws regardless of how unreasonable they are.

However, it doesn't seem to have gained any traction and I noticed a sudden change in the direction taken regarding with the male lead, perhaps in hope to appeal to a larger audience?! Overall, the show would have benefited more from keeping up with their original ideas and a longer run but I still enjoyed.

Try Hwayugi. It has the fantasy elements, plus some good interactions with with characters. It's also based off of Journey to the West, if that helps (it doesn't help me since I don't know the book).

Yes, it's a good drama that deals with building yourself up after a tragedy and dealing with ptsd and survivor's guilt. It also outline a reality all too common of corporate favoring money over humans' life. The characters are lovable and very touching, especially the grandma.

However, I have never disliked a character like this one:
I absolutely resented/disliked the mother, OMG! She was terrible from the start! She mistreated her eldest by favoring her youngest and openly spoiling her, complementing her and giving her all her attention and favors. I honestly felt like she was the step-mom than MC's mom.

Don't get me started when the teen MC is injured, how the "mom" doesn't give a damn about her and shake her while she had head injury and worse yet blame her for her sister death. Not caring about her eldest emotions and well being.

If that wasn't enough the MC has to actually work to support her now alcoholic and somewhat suicidal mom while growing up and listen constantly to her mom lamenting a life without her precious favored daughter.

Basically psychological abuse, negligence, child labor and physical abuse (when she hit her).

And even after she saw "the light" and came to her senses by the end of the show, she still refused to let her daughter chose the man who made her happy rather than the one she approved of, as if she hasn't made her daughter suffer enough as it is.

The mom was the worst character in the show, if she truly learned from the loss of one daughter, she would have cherished the other one more and be thankful to at least have one of them surviving.

Yeah, I hated the mom too. Moon Soo should not have had to point out to her mom that if she had stayed with Yeon Soo, she would have been dead too. Or ask if her mom if she wished she had died instead. Because this is clearly how she has felt for years and probably fueled her survivor's guilt.

I disagree about her not letting Moon Soo chose the man who made her happy in the end. I think she had come around on Gang Doo or at least accepted that he was Moon Soo's choice. She did ask about him when Moon Soo visited her and didn't seem to be upset when the aunt said Moon Soo was all smiles around him. At least that's what I prefer to think.

She's not my most hated mom though. That still is strictly the mom from Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. That woman made me RAGE. [/QUOTE]

Anyway, I really liked JunHo in this so I kinda want to watch Chief Kim now. And I'll watch Won Jin Ah's next drama.

Oh yeah on the final episode (was it like 2 years later? IIRC) she was OK with him, I was more talking about until that point. Sorry I miscommunicated

Has anyone watched "Father Is Strange"? It has 52 episodes but it's surprisingly good for such a long show, I binged watched it and loved every minute of it.

I haven't watched Father is Strange.

I'm starting to get a little bored of A Korean Odyssey. It doesn't help that I don't really care about the main couple at all (I really hate the plot line with the bracelet). I still like all the other interactions though.

Misty remains fantastic, though I'm only on episode 4.

That's kinda shame when it happens, I haven't watched Misty yet but I definitely dropped some drama because the characters were just not likable even though they were supposed to.

I watched Mirror of the witch https://www.viki.com/tv/31011c-mirror-of-the-witch?locale=en and while I liked the premise, the story, the characters and the filmography, I felt like the show was went longer than necessary, some episodes felt repetitive and kinda fillerish. It's still good and I would recommend if you guys have nothing else to watch (I recommended way better shows on this OT so check them out first :p).

What I love about Misty is that all of the characters (with maybe the exception of Tae Wook, at least now) are very, very morally gray. It feels pretty unusual for a kdrama, and I really like that we have an almost "anti-hero" female main character.

Also the visuals are on point! It's so gorgeously shot and the clothing...
