Welcome to the Korean dramas & movies OT! This is an all-purpose thread for Korean dramas & movies discussion of past, present, and upcoming shows, as well as actors and actresses…etc.
New and confused? Here a little introduction:
Korean dramas or K-dramas are television dramas made in South Korea, they are popular worldwide, partially due to the spread of Korean popular culture (the "Korean Wave"), and are available through streaming services that offer multiple language subtitles. They have received adaptations throughout the world, and have had a cultural impact on other countries.
These are 2017 most watched shows in Korea:
Guardian: The Lonely and Great God: Fantasy/Drama
In ancient times, Kim Shin is an unbeatable general in wars cursed to become a goblin and remain immortal for hundreds of years unless he meets his bride. Ji Eun Tak is orphaned at a young age live with her abusive aunt and possess the power of seeing spirits, she accidentally summons the goblin and so their journey begin.
Strong Girl Bong-soon: Action/Comedy
Do Bong-soon was born with superhuman strength, her dream however is to create a video game with herself as the main character. Coincidently, she gets the job of a bodyguard to a rich heir Ahn Min-hyuk, the CEO of a gaming company who has recently received anonymous threats, blackmails, and even been stalked at an occasion.
Stranger: Crime/Drama
Hwang Shi-Mok is prosecutor who had brain surgery when he was a child, which caused him to lack emotion. He is also one of the only prosecutors not involved in corruption. A passionate and warm-hearted Police Lieutenant Han Yeo-Jin meet him at a murder crime scene and team up to eradicate corruption at the prosecutor's office and solve a serial murder case.
Tunnel: Thriller/Crime
In 1986, Detective Park Gwang-Ho desperately tries to catch a serial killer, he chases him through a tunnel and finds himself in the year 2017. The serial killer has resumed the killings that began 30 years ago.
These are my personal favorites, I strongly recommend you to give them a go. Trust me and you won't regret it.
Reply 1988 (2016 N°1 most watched in Korea): Family/Slice of life
Times may have been a little simpler, less technological, but still just as challenging to get through a typical day of life in the late 1980s. Five childhood friends, who all live in the same Ssangmundong neighborhood of Seoul, lean on each other to survive their challenging teen years and set a path for their futures.
Note: This is hands down the best & emotionally heavy Korean slice of life I have ever seen, the characters are well written and attaching, the dialogues feel as real as you can get from a TV show, the emotions are so well translated that you may laugh and cry at various events. Honestly, I have never loved a drama as much as I loved this one.
Fight My Way: Slice of Life/Romance
Do dreams always come true?
Ko Dong Man has always dreamed of becoming famous as a taekwondo athlete, his bickering longtime friend, Choi Ae Ra, aspires to become a television anchor and the gentle Baek Seol Hee always wanted to get married and have children. Can these friends achieve their individual dreams despite having "third-rate" qualifications? Follow them as they grow up and face adult life.
Note: Real life isn't easy and it's even harder if you want to achieve your dreams while not having the means to do it, this show portrays our everyday struggle in a realistic and heartwarming way.
Oh My Venus: Comedy/Romance
Kang Joo Eun was envied by every girl and desired by every boy in high school as the "Daejeon Venus" because of her pretty face and killer figure. At age 33, she has achieved her professional goals but let herself go over the years and is now overweight and often disregarded and overlooked by society and her coworkers.
Yeong Ho is a celebrity personal trainer who is involved in a scandal in the United States and forced to flee to Korea until things cool down. Can he overcome his childhood trauma and fulfill his family wishes? Or will he continue to run away from his responsibilities?
Note: You enjoy comedies? You enjoy a good fluffy romance? Give this drama a go. (As an aside the main actress started the dimple trend in Korean and now most celebrities created one)
