Online in Japan, fans are wondering why the mascot character and the official representative for the country's biggest game magazine Famitsuappear in Death Stranding.
Famitsu recently gave the game a perfect score—one of only twenty-six to get the coveted 40/40 in the publication's history.

Somewhere. I think.
Kotaku discovering that Famitsu scores mean jack shit? Well, that good ol' meme is still relevant then. Even user reviews on Metacritic for a game with pro-women/LGBT stuff are more relevant than majority of Famitsu 40/40 reviews, so... (granted, Famitsu reviews don't make you lose all hope in humanity, but you catch my drift).

Clearly they only gave it a perfect score because they were allowed to be in the game!!!!!

Let's just see what ELSE they gave a perfect score, MUAH HAHAHA

Metal Gear Solid V
Metal Gear Solid 4
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker

And THERE you have it, uncontestable proof that Kojima planned to allow the famitsu team to be in the game JUST to get a high score for Death Stranding and ALL these other titles.

For shame, for shame!

Lets be honest.
Even if Geoff does not simply give DS GOTY, he will make up a new award category just for DS.

Well, they gave perfect score to MGS V and PW but no MGS 2 and 3, pretty fishy to me

Oh dear.

Not a great look, and with the context about Hall of Fame as well in the game. Maybe more US reviewers needed cameos not for the game to fly over their heads, too.

I am, but will the stain of shame ever leave Kojima?

I think we can all agree there's no way it got full marks because they liked it, that's just... no!

Famitsu has too much careful consideration behind a game's quality to give it top marks like that out of nowhere.

Clearly they were bought off.

I didn't realize Nintendogs had a Famitsu cameo
it doesn't mean every game that gets a perfect score has a cameo, but when there's so many references it does bring into question their review.
not that it needed anything to be brought into question anyway. it's famitsu. their job is to hype up games.

I'm not sure that the best way to demonstrate that Kojima hasn't colluded with Famitsu to give his game a perfect score is to demonstrate that they keep giving him perfect scores when those scores are scarce.

Like, I don't hold modern Famitsu in any esteem and don't think this is a sign of anything special, but it might help if you think these things through. You're describing a pattern of action here. We went from 4% of the perfect scores we've given going to Death Stranding to 15% going to Kojima's games.

Wasn't there a similar controversy where there was Enterbrain/Famitsu stuff in Peace Walker?

The thing is, cameos and stuff from press outlets are fairly common for big publishers. I remember Monster Hunter had some Dengeki quests and items, and not just once. Hell, even Super Mario Maker had the Famitsu mascot as special character.

So yeah, funny that people are only discovering this.

Do people in Japan have... Reverence for Famitsu? I mean, can't they tell...?

Nah, nobody really cares for reviews from press outlets there (unless you have an agenda to push, I guess), and Famitsu is no exception.

don't know about that, but as mentioned in the article the editor-in-chief of famitsu who's now the president of the publishing company that publishes the magazine appeared in 428: shibuya scramble, and that game got a 40/40 too.

Yeah, but that game is amazing and deserves all the perfect scores in the world.

Play 428: Shibuya Scramble, lads.

Is Kotaku inferring that Famitsu is corrupt? Is the Japanese outrage real or is it one tweet by someone with 10 followers who feels outraged? (I'm not giving Kotaku a click after the child porn article)

Okay yeah, Famitsu has appeared in a bunch of Metal Gear games as product placement, especially Peace Walker's Japanese version where all magazine items were Famitsu issues, and the president of Famitsu's parent company was part of the game's ad campaign:

Not a great look.

Nor is it when Geoff Keighley says he has no influence in the GOTY process, yet proceeds to constantly tweet nothing but Death Stranding on some propaganda shit.

Oh there's no way it can win now, not after being so much more divisive than a lot of games this year, it would create a huge controversy and would tarnish The Game Awards permanently.

Had the game got glowing reviews then fine, but honestly I think it would be in their best interest to avoid giving it an award just for the bad optics alone.

it will win best ps4 exclusive and maybe some acting awards. doesn't even have to rig it in such a bad year.
