Kotaku: Playstation Now Will Offer Downloads Later This Year

Limited to PlayStation 4 games - at least in the beginning. Still, the plan is a huge step forward.

A rumour recently did the rounds suggesting that Sony's PlayStation Now service, which is basically an on-demand games library that can be streamed, would be getting offline functionality. An industry source was able to confirm to Kotaku UK that downloads are coming to Playstation Now, and add some detail.

The functionality is due to roll out in late September this year, but will be limited to PlayStation 4 games (at least initially).

The games you download will work in the same way that PlayStation Plus games do: that is, they'll work as long as you have an active PS Now subscription, and should be playable offline on your primary PS4. Much like other PlayStation content, the games can also be played on other accounts that share the same PS4.

It seems strange that Sony omitted this news from the company's E3 conference, where it may have added pizzazz to a rather by-the-numbers show. But there we are: for those of us who maybe aren't on the best connections, PS Now will get a lot more attractive later this year. Source

It depends if PlayStation are working on PS3 emulation. I get the feeling they are working on a range of service changes behind the scenes but are not ready to talk about them.

It could be cheaper, but I don't think it can be directly compared to Gamepass in terms of value since it has like 600+ games you can play.

Huge news. I'm all for this. This is a good option for people like me who don't even have the internet speeds to support streaming. This allows more people to give sony money. Hope they can bring it to PS3 as well (Even though they cut PSnow support on that system).

Maybe just have it where the title is added like a PS+ title. Where you can only download from your list of games if you're currently a PSnow sub.

Maybe Day 1 games? maybe not, but I will definitely be looking forward to this.

Probably, but if they manage to emulate PS3 games which is impossible imo, they actually offer a good price for 650+ games. I would probably subscribe base on the current line up, ps3 included ofc

I'd hope they lower the cost to be similar to Game Pass, but from Sony's end, this pricing could deter people from signing up for 1 month to play a game and beat it and then cancel their subscription.

Depending on what games are offered, and if they offer 1st party games quickly like Xbox does, $100/yr could be a steal considering Sony's exclusive lineup.

As of now, I'd never be interested in streaming games, since that doesn't work with my bad Brazilian connection. I could change my mind for PS NOW if they offer game downloads, though the PS4 selection right now is pretty bad, I can see them adding something to sweeten the deal.

We'll have to see. In an ideal world we'd have PS3 games playable on a PS4 without streaming but I don't think that'll be a thing.

That's not too bad and cheaper than gamepass which I guess is the reason this exists at all. Very interesting when the game selection also contains AAA games.

I really want to play RDR again. Mad I let a friend borrow my copy, else I'd just pop it in my PS3.

I picked up RDR on my local gamestop a couple months ago for 20 NOK (about €2).
Depending on your local conditions you might get lucky :)

Anyway, they should probably expand Now to other countries if they allow this as you will no longer be shafed by the ping.

Huh, interesting. The option to stream and/or download a game seems nice.

Wonder if PS5 will have ps3 back compat so you could download ps3/ps4/ps5 games onto it?
