I don't get why so many on this forum expect a 2019 release. Feels like everything has been pointing towards 2020

It's more wishful thinking than anything. 2020 has always seemed like the date that Sony and Microsoft have unspokenly agreed to go again but some people just want a brand new console regardless of the realities of the tech.

2020 makes sense. 2019 announce games that are coming anywhere up to before e3. Then in e3 2020 announce it for fall/winter, alongside any games on both gens.

Cyberpunk is almost guaranteed to be on both gens at this point.

2020 is just right .. 2019 would be way too soon especially factoring in the mid-gen consoles.

Not America
Makes sense. It allows the tech to mature for better cost of production for AMD and Sony as well as giving enough breathing room for PS4's end of generation block busters trio to come out and sell well.

Starfield as a launch title for Playstation and Xbox would be great. You know like Oblivion but not delayed this time.

Honestly have no idea what to expect with a PS5, aside my PS4 games not working on it. Can't say I'm all that excited.

Team 2019 wont take this lightly, they'll go down kicking and screaming....like they are in the E3 thread

Sony having their own show at their own time (or Sony Directs) instead of E3 doesn't by itself say anything about PS5 release timing as I see it.

The implication is if they miss E3, they either haven't got enough to show or they're too far out to reveal. If you don't reveal the PS5 by E3 then you basically miss the Christmas period and it'd be suicide to announce a new machine before the holidays.
The only thing that makes sense is if they're planning on revealing early 2020 to release by that winter.

Another 7 year cycle. Holy shit... it's been that long by then.
I don't really see the issue with it this time around. Last gen games were really struggling to run on consoles late in the gen. This gen it seems like the only console having any issues it the base Xbox and we have the option to upgrade this time around if it bothers us.

2020 still feels way too early. It feels like we only got out of the malaise that usually hangs over launch year around 2016 or so. Really feel like these systems could run into 2023 at least, if not 2025, especially with the Pro/X.

Yep. It's not coming next year.

2020 is all but locked in

That works out perfectly for the Switch to still get a few major third party ports (like NBA2K) through the main part of its life before the PS5 leaves it behind.

If the PS5 launches in 2020, then we will probably see cross-gen titles until 2022 like this generation. In 2022 the Switch is five years old, aka a normal generation.

The only question now is if Microsoft will try to jump the gun and start the generation early in 2019 to get a first mover advantage like it had with the 360. That could accelerate when we stop seeing cross-gen games.
