Should have signed Holly Holm.

Her views are pretty terrible if she still holds them. Sandy Hook truthers are fucking dangerous.

On top of that her performance is terrible.

WB is collecting all that usage data from everyone choosing Sonya's AI fighter... so they'll be shrugging off all these complaints and just point at the data.

Name recognition. Plus there's a lot of confluence between gamers and combat sports (MMA/Wrestling) fans. Just look at how huge our Wrasslin threads are.
I see, thank you. Poor choice from Warner Brothers though. I have not played the game, but I have watched the Story mode on Youtube, and indeed, she did a terrible job at voicing Sonya.

Still, I wish it didn't have to be queer folks speaking up. Where are our allies on this?
I mean, allies? These industry "allies" are probably the same people who didn't give enough of a fuck about a large game publisher doing an AMA on a child porn site visited by dangerous terrorists to cover it for more than a day. Yeah, sorry but the games press has shown itself for what it really is.

I mean, maybe if you're looking to downplay comments made by a piece of shit full of transphobia or white supremacist propaganda, you might be able to get some support from the games press there.

Kinda Funny is getting more flak for not going in on Notch and PDP in a youtube video than NRS for hiring a Sandy Hook truther and transphobe to promote Mortal Kombat.

I'm no fan (of the woman or her performance), but it makes sense for marketing reasons - particularly to the MMA/WWE crowd.

The problem is that they didn't really market her inclusion outside of the initial reveal. That happened and that was more or less it. I was expecting them to do a lot of cross promotion where Sonya might have a Ronda in-game costume or Ronda might wear some Sonya-inspired costume at a big WWE event (like Wrestlemania). But it never happened. Her inclusion makes no real sense. Even people who're unaware of her horrible views don't like her inclusion because she's by far the weakest link in the voice cast. And this sticks out in a big way because of all the characters, her role actually calls for the most range in emotions.

Yeah that's the thing, I didn't notice any marketing with her in it. All the TV ads I saw around launch didn't mention her

Actually I would have no idea she's in the game except for threads on ERA

Realistically, we know exactly who is involved in the buffoonery at KF games, and some of the involved have even responded in that thread.

People have been upset at Ronda since it was known. I don't think Ed Boon has commented on anything, we just have to kind of rail against a vague corporate entity right now. Ronda Rousey IS bullshit, but NRS or WB haven't fucked up any PR statements yet, because they haven't released any on the matter.

My friends it's time to read the article. or at least the OP

I didn't write anything sooner because I thought that maybe I wouldn't have to be the one writing this. As this piece was in the middle of being edited (I've been writing this over the course of two days) my peer Danielle Riendeau at Waypoint published an article about Rousey's involvement, which is heartening. Still, I wish it didn't have to be queer folks speaking up. Where are our allies on this?

She was announced as starring in MK11 on January 23rd. There was plenty of time for the big news sites to write this kind of article. It is very telling that they wait until after they receive their free review copies and post their review before posting an article like this.

If Netherealm Studios knew about this, shame on them. If not, they need to patch her out of the game pronto like Jontron.

Ctrl+f "domestic abuse". A shame this was left out of both the waypoint and kotaku articles. Ronda is trash.

But they didn't even use her for marketing purposes.

They absolutely have. The announcement was covered by a ton of WWE/MMA blogs in January. Those were outlets that weren't otherwise going to pay any attention to the game. Just because they aren't paid advertisements doesn't mean it's not marketing.

You know what I want to do? Play Mortal Kombat 11. But I would have to be wild to consider it. I'm not obligated to let bygones be bygones, and I'm just not going to. Rousey's presence in Mortal Kombat 11 is unacceptable. Sonya could have been played by any number of capable actresses, but instead, NetherRealm stunt casted someone whose very presence makes many of my friends feel completely uncomfortable playing Mortal Kombat 11.
Tl;DR, this sucks.

THE
ARTICLE

Also yes, it's super fucked up that it falls upon the queer community to have to speak out against a well documented celebrity's shittiness while everyone else spends their time being super excited about scorpion's new fatality.

One of the reasons I haven't picked the game up yet, she brings down the story mode with her awful voice acting and I'am surprised that NetherRealm put her in the game.

It's entirely possible they planned all of the above but scrapped it once they realized they fucked up with the casting.

She was noticeably bad in the game. Luckily for us, Sonya gets killed off really early in the story and I don't plan to play as her ever. The only time I'd hear her voice is in towers.

Clearly you didn't read the article.

Nothing in the article tells me why this article had to come out now and not 2-3 months ago. Waiting for other people to speak up before you do is not a good enough reason.

If the press spoke up about this sooner this could have been a bigger issue and potentially force Warner Bros to act and make changes. We certainly had threads speaking against this why didn't the press?

Somewhere
My main issue is that her voice acting was leagues below the rest of the cast. Terrible in comparison.

And, of course, Ronda Rousey is a piece of shit, so that doesn't help.

Some corporate dude thought
"Give her a shitload of money so we can use her for commercials"
and that was it. I bet my ass on that.

As if any of the devs thought they would need Ronda for this game or that her performance was any good.
Just pay a freaking good Voice Actor fair money and don't include an asshole like her

I mean, you know why the same way we all know why.

No one wanted to weather the heat of telling the gaming public that they shouldn't support a product due to the political ravings of someone voicing one of the characters. You've seen how that goes. Like you said, we had threads on it here, it was talked about at length, and even there, most people's attitude is "well it doesn't concern me so I don't care." Hell, in this very thread, the majority of people saying her casting was a mistake is due to her piss poor job rather than the fact that she's a Sandy Hook Truther and a domestic abuser.

You know why. Which is why it's fucked up that it falls upon the marginalized to talk about this on a large stage AGAIN.

We had a pretty sizable thread on it when it was announced. It's not like this article is the first time someone has brought it up.

You can't see why she might not want to be the first person to go "An actress in this game is a TERF/general piece of shit and it lowers the quality of the game"? Gaming culture has a shitty history with LGBT issues and given that she's trans on top of this, it just puts a target on her back.

I know, but in NRS's case it was more of 'isn't that fucked up?'compared to the personal call outs for accountability with Kinda Funny. I suppose it's a difference between a corporate entity and individuals who we can call out specifically. I don't see why NRS/WB can't be called out or held similarly accountable considering it's far more substantial and intentional.

Man MK11 is really getting beaten up

People on the left are mad because of Ronda and NRS' shitty labor practices

People on the right are mad that Jax ended slavery and the Women aren't sexy enough (I will let you decide which side has the more valid complaints)

Everyone is mad at the Krypt

Bravo netherrealm.

Shes in the game because the majority of people dont know the shit shes said or done. I had no idea. All i knew her from is ufc and wrestling. I dont know why people keep asking why they would put her in, its clearly publicity. Resetera doesnt make up the entire playerbase of games...i guarantee most people see her and dont know anything negative that shes done.

Rousey's inclusion in MK11 has severely damaged my opinion of NetherRealm, and the reports of the company's poor treatment of its employees isn't helping.
