These guys did every damn thing the right way, treated their people right, brought forward female representation in the medium and made some amazing works of art. I bonded with lots of people over Haruhi and the movie.

More incel rightwing terrorism.

How about wait for the final hearing before you jump to conclusions? Multiple reports still haven't investigating about his motive yet.

So incredibly heartbreaking. Folks just going about their lives and someone just decides to do this to them. Such an incredibly evil act. My heart goes out to their families.

get me banned if I'm proved wrong. I guess it could be an angry employee.
He's confirmed to never have been an employee either.
All we know is that apparently he screamed about getting "ripped off", which due to Japanese language can mean various things, including being plagiarized (which I think is the most used thanslation in the social media, but still is a guess).

The GoFundMe has surpassed $750K: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-kyoani-heal

I really hope they are sincere with regards to distributing that money properly. The logistics of which are sure to be quite complicated.

Woke up and the death toll has tripled... I feel like I'm going to cry. I can't even imagine how all their loved ones must feel.

It's senseless.

What a tragedy. So many lives lost for nothing. I really wanna know what the fucker's real 'motives' were.

Dude stop. Not of, HAVE. Should HAVE. Would HAVE. Could HAVE. Might HAVE. This is triggering me so hard. And yeah, the way you described it in your first post seemed a bit insensitive.

京都のアニメ制作会社の放火・火災事件だが、確保された41歳の男は関東在住で、現在意識不明の重体だという。
Newest news on suspect is his life is in critical condition

According to police investigation, suspect had transported 40L of gasoline into contailer onto a wheel barrel and wheel into the front door
Front desk was wondering what he was doing, when he spread the gasoline and using a long lighter igniting causing the first explosion, and becasue the staircase was near the entrance blocking the escape path.

So NHK TV explanation of the event

The fire was started near the entrance, where two body were discovered

2nd floor was 11 bodies, and the staircase between 2nd and 3rd floor was the 12th body, these are t he twelve body that was listed in heart/lung failure condition(Mistrsnlated as heart attack by some english new ssite)

3rd floor near the entrance to the roof was 11 body discovered, unsure whether unable to open the locked door or the smoke got to them.

Total 25 bodies in the building, 8 that was critical but was unmable to be save so total death so far is 33

Fire expert(Former Fire investigator) on the show explain that the lack of smoke damage to the first floor show there was an explosion(Confirming police report and witness stament)
And that due to the smoke and outwall suffer damage showing massive heat rising quickly.

Fire expert also say that an explosion fire is not the same as a regular fire and that smoke and other will come quickly, and that even expert fireman like him will have trouble figureing out correct action to take and that the smoke and dangerous gas will knock or disable a person very quickly.

Another reason for the lower security that day, there was a NHK show coming that day to interview and film KyoAni, and they also had a staff meeting planned, so preparing for those, fail to notice the person.

I wonder if he knew about the NHK thing and staff meeting , or if it was just coincidence.

I know it doesn't help or make it better, but I'd rather die from smoke intoxication than having my entire body covered in flames.

Read a few reports of critically wounded people who fled the building while on fire.

That's fucking harrowing and I can't even imagine how they could have felt. :(

Reminds me of a similar tragedy in my city, where drug ring enforcers burned a casino down with people inside and lots of them died because of intoxication. :(

It's so scary and unbelievable how you can die so fast. I presume due to smoke and fume inhalation? I dread being in an equal situation and totally lost what to do. RIP. Fuck the guy who did it.

It's been rough for us here in Osaka and Kyoto today. A lot of worry and sadness in the Kansai entertainment community.

One of my business partners lives in Kyoto near KyoAni and had to go to the hospital all day for some cardio testing (unrelated to the incident). He watched as the whole thing unfolded on TV in the waiting room, and then later found out (because of the news vans and police everywhere, and later news confirmation) that the perp was actually being held in the hospital he was in (naturally, victims were taken to a different, closer hospital for obvious reasons).

Just absolutely nuts.

I feel gutted.

This is like my worst nightmare but happening to other people.... and knowing it can happen to anyone because of some asshole wanting to kill...ughhhh
Killing half of one of my favorite anime studios...Burning them alive :( fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk and not just their lives but also all their hard work :(

You dont do this shit unless the intent was to kill as many people as possible.

Ugh some people are just evil. :|

I hope they will get to save that arsonist and bring him to court.

Based on SilentPanda's post, I guess the whole entrance area was burned, and the people upstairs were trapped; I'm curious as to why the victims on the 2nd floor couldn't go to the balcony and escape from there, maybe the fire/smoke got there too quick. The victims on the 3rd floor probably tried to get to the roof and it was either locked or the fire/smoke got them too :\

This is so heartbreaking and horrifying... Devastating tragedy.

When was the last time Japan had a mass killing larger than this? Have they in peace times? I know the Sagamihara stabbings took 26 lives (and had more vile intentionality behind every death), but 33 people killed is just... god.

I'm thinking about how scarily desensitized I've become to mass shootings because they happen so so often in the states. I hate that. I hate hate hate that I'm not as absolutely gutted every time several innocent people are murdered in cold blood, because I know conservatives will do everything in their power to prevent any change. It's just become, like, a fact of life.

"Oh yeah, every once in a while someone opens a gun on a public place and indiscriminately murders a bunch of innocent people. It's just something that happens sometimes that nobody does anything about. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ "

But hearing about this, in a country that rarely ever sees violence on this scale, I remembered how deeply gutting it still is. Imagining that sense of daily peace being absolutely shattered for everyone out of nowhere, at the hands of one angry man.

They said he ran away from the building towards a nearby train station after the fire started but fell to the ground. Some reports said he was pursued by employees of Kyoto Animation.

"A person with singed hair was lying down and there were bloody footprints," a 59-year-old woman living nearby told news agency Kyodo.

"He seemed to be in pain, irritated and suffering, but also angry as if he was resentful. I heard him saying something like 'you copied it'," a neighbour said.

The Asahi Shimbun newspaper quoted a 61-year-old neighbour as saying she clearly heard the man shout : "You ripped me off."

This is THE largest mass murder death toll since WWII. Saren gas attacks injured some 5000 people, but 14 people died.

Well, he is in critical condition and hospital is not sure if they can save him at this time.

Sentiment of online seem to be that his live should be saved and be put in court and find his reasoning for this crime.
Sorry, I did not hear about the attacker being in critical condition himself. If he does survive then he should be severely punished.

I, for one, hope he survives so that he can rot in jail while waiting for the death penalty.
