In the fifth episode of the last season of Netflix's "Orange Is the New Black," the character Maritza, who has been languishing in an immigrant detention center, finds out about a toll-free hotline she can call to get a free lawyer.

As she's rejoicing, another character, Gloria, cuts her off.
Gloria warns Maritza: "You have to be careful, though. Apparently if they figure out that you're using the hotline, Big Brother shuts it down."

That's exactly what happened, advocates say. Immigration and Customs Enforcement shut down a real hotline for detained immigrants run by the California group Freedom for Immigrantsless than two weeks after it was prominently featured on the show.

ICE spokesman Shawn Neudauer did not respond to a list of specific questions about the termination of the Freedom for Immigrants hotline. But he said detainees are allowed to make free calls to legal service providers on the ICE-approved list "for the purpose of obtaining initial legal representation."

"Pro bono organizations found to be violating these rules may be removed from the platform," he said.

Why would Netflix and the people working on the show put that in when they even acknowledged that it could get shut down if they found out?

Fascism is in the US, and less people are able to stay willingly blind about it as time proceeds

Sadly, I think the opposite is happening. At least in the conservative sphere of America. More and more are having their eyes opened and celebrating that it's happening. It's like, holy crap America, why did you even fight Hitler in WWII?

A lot of Americans held rallies in celebration of Hilter's ideology before America entered the war.

And those people when nowhere after the war was over.

Damn, that's really fucked up. I find it hard to believe that ice didnt know about this hotline before the netflix show. The wording of the ice response makes it sound like they shut these sorts of hotlines down all the time.

Why the hell are people acting like this is Netflix's fault? One of the people behind this group appeared on the Friday episode of MSNBC's The Beat with Ari Melber and it sounds like Netflix had their full support to feature the service or something like it in their episode. Big brother shutting it down was a joke in a comedy/drama show that has, unfortunately, turned dark. Netflix raised awareness of an essential service for those who find themselves swept up in ICE's hands and ICE retaliated. The blame is ENTIRELY on ICE's fascist hands.

The group is going to sue ICE if they don't restore it to working order.

Many of us felt that a terrible box was opened on Election Night 2016. I don't think it's something that can be put back. The bullies and horrible people are emboldened and as cocky as ever. I don't see these scum going away, even if Trump loses in 2020.

Judge orders immigration detention hotline restored

The group alleged officials yanked the line in August after it was featured on the Netflix show "Orange Is the New Black." The judge ruled that the nonprofit's speech "was a substantial and motivating factor" behind the shutdown.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to restore a free hotline that lets detained immigrants report concerns about custody conditions, which was cut after being featured on the show "Orange Is the New Black."
U.S. District Court Judge André Birotte Jr. on Tuesday issued a preliminary injunction ordering officials to restore the hotline that had been run by the nonprofit Freedom for Immigrants since 2013.
Freedom for Immigrants alleged that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement yanked the line in August after it was featured on the Netflix show, which drew attention to the group's criticism of immigration detention conditions.
Birotte ruled that the nonprofit's speech "was a substantial and motivating factor" behind the shutdown, and the move forced immigrants to pay $1 a minute to call the group on a line that is now monitored by the government.
-------------------
It was not immediately clear when the line would be restored. A message sent to ICE seeking comment was not immediately returned.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement previously said the nonprofit had misused the hotline by using three-way calling to let immigration detainees speak with family. The line was not monitored or recorded, the agency said, so immigrants could find and speak with lawyers about their cases.
The nonprofit also runs visitation programs at immigration detention facilities across the country.
The hotline received between 600 and 14,500 calls per month, according to the lawsuit.
