Whew. WHEW. This game is REALLY bad. The jank hits hard in all the most incredible (bad) ways. Not only is it an unpolished game with some really wonky controls, poor responsiveness, and hilariously bad enemy AI, but it is a SUPER HARD game. It's unforgiving in ways that don't seem fun. There isn't really a learning curve but it throws you into a scenario and expects you to just tough it out. Except the tools you have are incredibly inefficient. It's a sadistic sort of game design concept based on making the player try and try again, replaying boring stretches of the game over and over just because of an accidental death. It's incredibly difficult to recover from a bad position - if you get spotted and you're in a crappy spot you're basically dead. The gunplay is terrible, nothing feels cool to pull off, your headshots feel like they're bouncing off because enemies all have full helmets.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew. I knew what I was getting into and it's still jankier than I was expecting. It honestly doesn't feel like they bothered to respond to playtesting for the game at all, because I can't see how anyone play tested this and not said "well, maybe erm, it's just not fun?"

Hahahahaha wow.

That's what I was afraid of.

Do you think there is a chance that SE gets around to fix it and is it fixable?

Between The Quiet Man and Left Alive, I get the feeling Square-Enix is trying to carve out a nice kusoge niche.

Square was so smart releasing this right before DMC5, Division 2, and Sekiro. They ensured a quiet burial with no youtube montages to make fun of it.

I will echo those impressions thus far. Yes this game has some pretty bad jank. Sometimes it is not too bad but there are other times it can get you flat out killed. The AI is stupidly smart and dumb at the same time. They can sometimes see straight through solid cover and in a stealth game like this it means game over. I am playing on Light because I heard this game was hard. Even on that difficulty there are some scenarios that in any other game you would think you are playing on hard or higher. The gadgets that are core to this game are quite weak, they should of tuned up their effectiveness and strength. The enemies have way too much health for their own good.

Still the weird thing is I am enjoying it because the world itself is great. I will probably finish it because I hope in further chapters you are given better tools and weapons. For anybody on the fence I would probably wait till it is cheaper.

I think I will restart the game on Light. Standard is a bit too much effort for me to invest into given how bad the controls, responsiveness, and scenario design is.

I finished Chapter 1 and got to Chapter 2. So I think what they were going for with the first chapter is that you're a rookie soldier up against an elite invading force and just barely making it out. Nothing wrong with the intent. Everything wrong with the execution. Even the big "set piece" that ends the chapter is embarrassing. You finally get to pilot a Wanzer, but it's a damaged one with non-functional legs. So you're sort of in this shooting gallery scene where you can't move around but can rotate the body and use the weapons. Enemy troops and tanks come at you, and you easily dispatch them. Except every time a tank blows up or someone shoots a rocket at you, there's this huge full screen explosion that feels low-res and oh so cheap. And you see that over and over again in this sequence. Just like how you hear "caution the enemy is approaching" over and over again every moment of the game on foot. Repetition is a thing in the game. And not a good thing.

In Chapter 2 you play as the lady cop. At first it starts promising - you are investigating a series of disappearances. Maybe less janky combat and some cool janky adventure game elements? Not quite. You walk around a small area, with a really awkward run animation, "investigating" by talking to people and getting crappy one-liners, until you find a little girl who is a lead in the crime. Then the war starts and well, it's back to bad stealthing around a HUGE village area... cool...... wait.... there are actual survivors now.... that you can..... lead to.... shelters.... wait..... escort.....? Noooooooooooo.

Also, the story in the game is honestly pretty disjointed and bad considering how "serious" it wants to be. Characters just show up and say stuff for the sake of it. Early on in Chapter 2, you find a survivor in a house somewhere, and before he even introduces himself, he asks if you're a cop and then proceeds to confess that he was involved in kidnapping children for the doctor you're looking for. He does this for seemingly no reason at all, because I thought he was some dude living there, and would have been happy to help him, but eh, yeah, I guess he wanted to fill me in on the PLOT immediately. Weird!

This game looks like a train wreck yet i'm really tempted to buy it off the PSN store. Is it really that awful or should I just get it physical so I can recoup some of the money if it's as bad as i'm expecting?

Probably get Physical, but even then as I said if you are on the fence you should probably wait till it gets cheaper which I feel won't be that long till it does.

I've been reading up on some interviews Nabeshima has done and looking at some of the gameplay mechanics, it kind of gives me a sense that what he was trying to go for was "Last of Us set in warzone in Front Mission universe".
He emphasize that this is a survival game and not stealth, avoiding enemies rather than confronting them, crafting to help your way through, multiple routes and player choices, story-driven gameplay, etc.
Shame it didn't work out like he intended, whether it was budget issue or perhaps he just isn't a very good director or something.

There's no regional pricing on Steam for Singapore! Haha!
It costs SGD$79.90, which is roughly USD$58.90.

After what they pulled with Nier Automata, why am I even surprised...

I definitely was not expecting it to be that bad. I was expecting like a 65-73 Metacritic but tbh it'll probably be in the high 40's/low 50's

Glad I held off on getting the digital version I would've had ÂŁ50 down the drain. I'll still pick this up but after a significant price drop.

I don't think time is the issue here. Even with a year more of work, the core design of the game seems fundamentally flawed, and nothing about it has ever looked good.

I would argue if they had more time and budget, it would get better. As a programmer myself, I can only imagine some of these issues I'm reading about is due to them not having amble time.

I don't doubt that the game would be less buggy and overall more polished given more time, but the art direction, level design, game design, etc. all seem flawed. The issues seem to stem from the pre-production and design phases. I'd argue that if the design and concept was great the lack of polish would be bearable by many, but the core seems rotten in this case.

Guess I am returning my $40 copy. Maybe some patches will make things better and I can pick it up down the line.

Although I wouldn't be surprised if the print run was super low and it never gets a re-print.
