Discussion thread for the bizarre progressive corner of Youtube. Many of these folks produce great content but aren't large enough to have received their own thread. They're a pretty important group, as for the last many years Youtube has been outright dominated by disingenuous centrists and far-right extremists, which is extra unfortunate since this platform is immensely popular among kids. But now we have a bunch of excellent content producers and they're gaining a lot of traction, hopefully in the next year we'll see them overtake the "sceptic sphere."

This topic will provide a space for discussion on the newest videos, debates or Twitter drama. But it could also be used for debate between users or discussion on the "sceptic community," to make fun of Ian Miles Cheong's tweets, or to laugh at the newest Sargon content, etc.

Bellow is a list of Youtubers suggested by ResetEra members, but that does not mean they are the sole focus. It would be awesome to increase this list to more content producers. So if there is a Youtuber that you like, please recommend them and ideally type out a little blurb to explain why others should check them out.

Content Warning: Many of these videos are criticising or responding to some very hateful people, as a result some of the content features clips of misogyny, homophobia, racism and transphobia.
If you're going to recommend a video, ideally let users know if it may include vile content. I marked some channels that feature clips of hateful people with this icon:

"Previously the Nostalgia Chick way back when, Lindsay is now on YouTube producing amazing, long-form video essays focusing on all aspects of film and more or less anything Disney (and Michael Bay. Don't question it). She brings incredible insight into the reading of a movie, and doesn't shy away from examining it through the social context under which it was created. She's funny, sarcastic, and never afraid to get real. If you want a different, incredibly thorough take on film that's a bit different from other channels, Lindsay's the one to check out. Youtube's #1 commulist. Hbomb is not only hilarious, but he was also one of the first progressive content producers who began responding to far right trash like Sargon. Most of his videos analyse and respond to current trends or talking points in the anti-feminist or skeptic community. "Broadly his work probably focuses on four major, overlapping areas:

-Narrative and ludonarrative design within video games and how narratives within games engage with interactivity.
-Broader musings on the nature of art and storytelling and their interaction with human cognition (his absolute best video is this frankly phenomenal examination of The Beginners Guide)
-Dissection of the alt-right and reactionary activity, especially on the internet, with a focus on examining structure and especially rhetorical techniques. He is less concerned with debunking or mocking their ideas and more with putting their tools of engagement under a microscope so we know how to fight them. If you've heard of his work before, its probably for his project about Angry Jack which he put out during the throes of Gamergate, and which he is following up on now with a new series called The Alt-Right Playbook
-As well as some wider projects concerned with the very nature of internet communities, internet fame, and how relationships between people change in the digital age. His other video you'd probably be familiar with would be This is Phil Fish"

Yea, I haven't seen Lindsay since back when she was making nostalgia videos. Though I hear her new stuff is good.

Dan though, he's great. Loved a lot of his recent content. I'll definitely write up a thingy for Dan.

Wait whats this about, I noticed he was winding down on political videos. Was this on him not being a good allie in that previous event, I never really researched into what was going on. Or the previous Metokur site affiliation?

"The recent controversy" is probably related to the stuff that happened like 6-7 months a'go? Accusations he gaslit someone. https://www.reddit.com/r/LateStageC...left_mods_response_to_hbomberguy_revelations/

annoying that gaf was the only way I could find that link for sure.

I think in a recent Q&A as well he said he was still going to do political stuff he just wanted to do fewer "Measured Response" videos since he was essentially doing the same thing the people he was critiquing were doing (low hanging fruit etc).

ContraPoints is amazing. Great thread; I wish I had more to offer here but as noted in the OP there's not a whole lot of noteworthy original leftist youtube content out there. Nice to see it's a growing field, though.

Mostly if I want political content I look for lectures or interviews by established thinkers, as that stuff is plentiful.

Pretty good idea for a thread! I'll have to look into the couple of YTers that I haven't had a chance to check out yet.

And for fans of ContraPoints, I recommend watching her two interviews with Michael Brooks here and here. Both are thoughtful in their talks, and it makes me really wish they did a podcast together; they have great chemistry. Or, at least that Natalie had her own podcast. Either way, at the end of the second interview they allude to either having something in the works, or her at least being a consistent guest on the show.

I'd actually recommend both The Majority Report and The Michael Brooks Show (a sub-show of TMR) as well, although they're more political commentary with a leftist perspective than lefty commentaries. Think TYT but with actual brains and common sense. They have a specific POV, but don't blindly seek out stories and narratives that back their views up (*cough* Jimmy Dore *cough*).

Yea, I know he's a fervent capitalist. I was more looking at people who are socially left.

Nice. A thread about some of our side's most persuasive debaters. I like it.

I also have to +1 on that Recommendation for Sam Seder, Michael Brooks, and Each of their two shows. They are perhaps the most underrated progressive talk show hosts who are willing to call out Dems on their shit but don't go don't down the rabbit hole of deflecting the Russia story and spewing dumbass conspiracies the way Jimmy Dore and Michael Tracey do. I'm not sure that people like Destiny are leftists, but the idea behind the thread is good!

Definitely wouldn't say Destiny is a leftist; dude is a firm believer in and frequently endorses capitalism; However he's leaps and bounds ahead of any prominent youtube skeptic or alt-right moron, he can actually talk to them on there level and does a great job of generally getting through to them in environments where they wouldn't come across a left-ish voice.

I sometimes go on pol out of morbid curiosity and to try and spot any fucked up memes in advance before they come out on the mainstream and since polsters like to put themselves on blast I'm happy to eavesdrop, but every so often I'll see someone will post a link to a Destiny video where people will argue with each other about whether or not he makes good points, the fact that he even pops up in what is essentially the shit pit of the internet and can cause some cognitive dissonance in the people there is an invaluable skill. I don't agree with all of his politics he definitely deserves a mention on the list.

Shaun's videos are so hard to watch sometimes when it comes to the people he talks about---ugh, I think the one with TL;DR talking about Anita Sarkeesian is one of the worst. Just, like, it's like bizarro land when it comes to the dude's reactions to what she's saying. Speaking of Anita, no FemFreq listed?

Also that new "Angry Atheist" video makes me fucking hate the Angry Atheist, can't believe I remember people once were into him---I'm glad I never subscribed to his brand of "intelligence".

But +1 for Lindsay Ellis, I've not really gone and watched her older stuff because, well, Channel Awesome left a bad taste in my mouth once I came of a certain age, but her new stuff is top-notch. It's not necessarily politically motivated but her Loose Canon videos are a very neat idea.

He's described himself as left-leaning as long as I've been watching him (since the JonTron fiasco). He's definitely on the left as far as US politics are concerned. I don't think he advocates for any policy you wouldn't hear from a mainstream Democrat.

A leftist OT is awesome. I have been following Destiny and Contrapoint for some time now , and I just subbed to Shaun and started checking out his videos.

Another leftist I want to recommend is Richard Coughlan I've been following him for almost 10 years. He is a standup comedian, friend with Contrapoints and has been making videos against the alt-right/nazis/conservatives since he started his channel. Some of his stuff is also hilarious like Nationalism in 2 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKUPFiICPHM

His Channel is:

Alright, so I've added Dan Olson and Lindsay Ellis to the OP, since both were being cited quite a bit. Someone has to type up a blurb for Lindsay, I really do not know anything about her.

I also added Anita as I already knew her videos, but uh she honestly kind of stands out among the other content producers. I dunno.

Very interested in checking these out and further channels added to this thread. I'm no leftist but I always like hearing different schools of thought. Cheers.

Glad to hear you're checking out the other side's content. Curious to hear if you like any of these particular Youtubers.
