I recommend Xros Wars, it is a lot of fun. I think the show really hits its stride by the third or so area the characters reach. After a few story arcs, they show really ramps up. I think the lead character and Shoutmon are consistently a lot of fun, too.
Yeah I just checked out about ten episodes and I'm really enjoying it. Taiki is a generic hero for sure but he's pretty smart which is nice, and Shoutmon is leagues and bounds ahead of every Partner Digimon basically in terms of personality.

Also the show has a fun premise but it's kind of dark...I mean there's no explanation about Digimon being revived yet like in other canon, so at the moment Taiki is presumably killing the bad guys. Also I feel like this is the most violence I've seen inflicted towards the human characters too. Kind of a dark show despite it's silliness.

Music is STRONG. Only issue is I think the transformation scenes are a bit too lengthy.

I was one of those kids that was too cool for Pokemon so I watched Digimon instead, and yeah, liked it a lot back in the day. It was really cool how the story progressed and got pretty serious. I do distinctly remember getting upset about how the English dub made the final Adventure boss a joke; I suppose I was online enough at the time to know the dub was making changes.

I didn't like 02 as much. I watched through the DarkWarGreymon arc at least, but I definitely didn't watch the final episodes, only hearing about what happened after. Now I do remember that Fox Kids for some reason heavily pushed this one western-themed episode, with a "The Good, the Bad, and the Digi Marathon" or something. What caught my attention in the promo was Sora in a tennis skirt, which made my preteen / early teen self go
eyes_1f440.png
.

I came back for Tamers, which I found interesting. I think I missed a chunk in the middle, but I was there for the ending arc.

Frontier changed networks, I think. In any case, I mostly stopped watching by this point, since I wasn't interested in the new characters or premise. No Digimon partners, no go, basically. I caught some bits of the second half, where the two leads were doing everything but still getting their asses kicked and the other leads just stood by. I also remember a sequence where everyone's destroying these cages using the first-level evolution, but the girl can't so she goes to the second level, and that was a pretty ugh moment even at that age.

Haven't watched anything else Digimon, until the first two episodes of Tri, and I stopped after that.

I was there for the gen 1 stuff and I was crazy into it. I remember getting up at like 630 or 7 am on a Sunday just to catch the new episode on tv as a 12 yr old. Got one of those tamagochi like things and later on a Digivice. Also collected those holographic cards that we got from chips here in Australia. I have fond memories of the first movie too. Very good times.

Yep, that's where I stand with it as well.
The dub is absolutely fantastic, and way, way better than most dubbed anime of the time. I'd much sooner have a funnier, localized dub than a poorly translated one that sticks to the source material.

I loved the first Western series and Tamers as a kid. Have never watched it since when it aired in the UK and have never played a Digimon game.

Might rewatch them all and play the Cyber Sleuth games at the same time soon, that would be lit

Cyber Sleuth is legit. Like, it's kinda better than it has any right to be, and it's one of the rare 'anime games' that I don't feel you'd even need to be a fan of the franchise to enjoy.

The first 3 series released on DVD in the UK in the last year or two, so they're like ÂŁ15 each on Amazon.

Thanks a lot for this! I only ever watched Adventure 1 and 2 , Tamers and the movie. Is anything after that worth watching? I'll be getting a massive nostalgia hit from those 3 but am open to anything new too if it's comparable quality or better.

Sorry, I'm in the same boat as you in terms of later stuff.
I did see the Tamers movie with Locomon, but that's about it.

I've watched most materials related to the IP and enjoyed most of them, with the exception of Young Hunters.

Adventure will be something I adore forever, mostly by force of nostalagia. Though that adoration has migrated from the Dutch to the English and eventually the Japanese version over the years.
Tamers is a legit great show that I would even recommend to people who've never seen anything Digimon related.

The recent games have all been very good and I hope they keep it up in the future. Really looking forward to Survive and the next Story game.

I own way more Digimon figurines than I'm willing to admit, they went the high quality route with many of them catering to their older audiences and I completely fell for it.

Lastly, put Agumon in Smash.

The first movie's soundtrack was a banger and Data Squad was the peak of the franchise. Come at me

The only Digimon series I ever liked was the one where they turn into Digimon. I remember sort of getting the impression awhile back that it was the most hated one lol.

I don't get the hype for Cyber Sleuth to be honest.

I say this as someone who is currently 40 hours into Hacker's Memory but the game is filled with some cringy anime tropes, and I've pretty much gone the whole game on autopilot. There's a decent plot to be sure deep down but so much of it is filler.

If not for the Digimon I probably would rank it pretty low...but getting Digimon makes the grind fun and it's so mindless I can relax while doing so.

The World series is far more ambitious and unique, not really much like everything else whereas the Story games are pretty basic RPGs. World New Order was a bit too easy for my taste and the plot was indecipherable but I'd much see them expand on that formula.

I'm still a big fan of Adventure, and rewatch it every few years. I appreciate the slow burn of getting to know the characters more, and the eventual arcs they all go through. They all grow and end up in such a different place than when they started. As a kid it felt epic. As an adult it's a good coming-of-age tale. The dub has it's obvious issues, but the heart is there.

The fact that Adventure 02 dropped the ball with everyone not named Ken, and to a lesser extent Davis, was pretty disheartening.

I'm actually very happy about going back to Digimon. I recently watched Tri, and I absolutely loved it. I cried so much, though. I was a big fan of Digimon growing up, but I only got to watch the first 4 seasons - after that, it's all a blur, and never really cared much about the art direction either (very fucking ugly, if you ask me). So Tri was great, because it's also super pleasant to watch. My favorite season is, of course, Tamers but Tri is a close second.

As for games, I had only played that one Digimon game on PS1 when I was very young. I kinda liked it, but never got around to actually play it properly. It felt as a Tamagotchi game, for some reason (but it was actually an RPG? Dunno). I recently bought the Cybersleuth collection for Switch and am looking forward to Digimon Survive (which will probably make me cry as well, lol).

One of the highlights of my childhood. I'm glad they are doing a modern retelling of Adventure and so pray it's good.

Wrote a fanfic that I was very proud, even if it was flawed, and a RPG campaign about the Dark Ocean that I regret not seeing it completed.

You're the first person I've seen who has said anything positive about Tri.

Frontiers lost me as a kid. Thought it was weird that the humans were now also digimon and i didn't understand it.
Kids are dumb :P

But I love the series and grew up on the first three shows. Had to tape most of the Myotismon arc on VHS so I could watch it and learned what happened.

Where I'm at is that Tamers was legit good, not just "good for a digimon series."

Adventure and 2 were both good with the former being better but the latter not being the worst.

frontier was there

Savers was surprisingly rad. Punching Digimon was a gimmick that should've gotten old but didn't.

Never paid attention to it because it was quite clearly a ripoff.
My fangirl nature will not let this slide! Fun facts time!

Digimon was created as boy's Tamagotchi (as in, it is literally a Tamagotchi with battling and American comic inspired designs to bring in the boy demographic that Tamagotchi was missing). It was originally called "Capsule Zaurus", most likely a follow-up/reference to an older Bandai property "Pocket Zaurus". It had a capsule motif instead of the cage motif that they ended up going with for the original V-Pet.

Since the name and motif were considered too similar to this new hit game called "Pocket Monster", they changed it to a digital aesthetic and went with the name Digital Monster to set it apart (yeah, I don't know why they thought that name was better).

I got into it during Adventure's original FOX run. I actually liked it more than Pokémon and it captivated me for much longer. I also had a massive crush on Tai, and even more so in 02 when he was older than me.

I absolutely loved Digimon World despite being terrible at it. I still played it long after I grew out of the series. Digimon World 2 was a big disappointment to me, and it's far too grindy for its own good. Also has none of the charm of World 1.

Today, I still prefer Digimon over Pokémon as I think it's far more interesting. I'd love to rewatch Tamers through the subbed version if someone could get on that.

Adventure was awesome, then 02 destroyed my heart with that Sora "and" Tai episode. Never wanted to watchh it again and never did lol
Tamers was ok, but after frontier I stopped watching anything Digimon related.

I played for the first time a couple years ago and had a blast with it. I've only had World 2, 3 and Card Battle as a kid. Though I did abuse speed up on emulator which made it a lot more enjoyable.
It's fun but obtuse and one of those games that's punishing when you mess up...also yeah painfully slow at parts

World Next Order makes it far easier to keep stat progress when your Digimon dies but I felt you max out way too fast.

Getting an Ultimate in World 1 that wasn't Monzaemon was an achievement.

Don't sleep on Savers people. I hate Agumons nose like everybody else but everything after episode 12 (or 13?) is a blast. You're not missing anything in between episode 3-12, just the usual, first time champion level, kick the evil Digimon's ass, go back report to the boss story. Best supporting cast in all seasons.

I almost always got Phoenixmon, kinda annoying but still, an ultimate is an ultimate.

Midgar, With Love
I watched Adventure as a kid. I started watching Adventure 02 when it debuted but those were tumultuous years for me growing up and I lost access to it and never retried. In 2005, I dated someone who played a ton of Digimon World and I got to kind of reconnect with the franchise a little bit through her. But it wasn't until 2011 that a buddy of mine decided we would sit down and watch everything we missed -- for me it was anything beyond the first season and for him it was anything beyond the second.

We began with a rewatch of Adventure and we both still liked it a lot. We thought Adventure 02 was relatively decent in its first half but rather fell apart for much of its second; we weren't big fans. Tamers blew us away by the time it had ended. Frontier was OK. The show that will stick with us the most, however, is Savers. (Or "Data Squad" as the dub decrees.) We loved it even more than Tamers. Between the terrific protagonist and terrifically detestable antagonist, we were all in and binged the last, like, fifteen episodes in a single day. We even went back and rewatched it again a few years ago. We checked out the Xros stuff later on when it became availabe. Xros was alright, though fairly improved in its second season. The Boy Hunters was fine, though we had watched most things dubbed so having to switch to subbed was a bit off-putting after all that time.

I still haven't seen the newer fare, including Tri. I started watching Tri as it released but kept hearing such awful things about it that I kind of lost interest. I ought to correct that. And I own Cyber Sleuth for PS4 as a showing of support for the localization but I've yet to crack it open. Need to get on that too.

Working on that also.
Watched 01 through Savers but didn't finish Savers cause I was in high school and thought I was to "old" for Digimon (hilarious I know). I should finish Savers at some point. Anyway I'll watch the adventure remake but they should make a sequel to Tamers damnit.
