Let's talk about the creature design in the upcoming film, Detective Pikachu.

Jigglypuff is still nightmare fuel. Mr. Mime's design is good at being Mr. Mime, but for all of us who hate Mr. Mime, it's tough lol

They look great. Cute overall, menacing when needed, all of them are really expressive.

That casting trailer showed lots of subtle movements Pikachu has; really convey what he's trying to say. All while looking good. Unlike Sonic :v

Great job at selling creatures from an alternate world.

Also, someone mentioned in the Sonic thread how well DP's characters blend into environments due to lighting. I don't know much, but it really shows... Again, unlike Sonic :v

It's amazing what you can do when you're not embarrassed by, and think you're better than, the material you're adapting.

I think they look amazing! They certainly don’t disappoint the child in me that was playing with them 20 years ago!

My issue is that what they did with the pokemon is basically this -

Yeah that looks like a realistic artstyle mario alright, and it looks godawful
Mario is a human so going one to one like that is going to make him look like a monster.

Pokémon are animals/monsters, how else do you translate them over, straight up Roger Rabbit them as cartoons?

They look like Pokemon so mission accomplished. They look a little too much like toys or animatronic robots you'd see at theme parks for my liking.

This "slapping textures on these designs" thing is extremely dismissive and simplifying the amount of work that went into those live action designs. Charizard alone is insanely detailed not simply for being rendered believably but for how faithfully they recreated aspects of his drawn design (example, someone mentioned though he looks more fierce he retains the cartoony round belly that even wobbles as he moves, rather than making him "edgier" or more "real life" looking).

Look at Torterra

You're really just dismissing that as "slapping a texture on"?
I don't think I'm being dismissive when that's most of what I'm seeing in the OP. The vast majority look exactly like what I described. High resolution textures and fancier shaderwork, while keeping the proportions intact. Hence the HD Mario/Homer comparison.

I did mention though that some work better than others though. Pikachu, Pangoro and Slaking look ok, and it seems like Torterra seems fine as well. Its level of detail is much expanded in the design itself, has a more natural looking palette, and clearly embraces the real world materials that it is composed of. The shot you posted also benefits from having its eyes covered in shadows, since the translation of the anime eyes into live action is usually where the illusion breaks the most easily.

I think another thing that I appreciate is that they took the time to make a lot of Pokemon for the movie, which makes truly believable that this is a pokemon world rather than our world with a Pikachu. That's what makes it work for me. Seeing an Octillery as a cook or Charmander burning a stove just adds to the illusion that this is its own world.

Compared that to Sonic which is the same tired "let's place a character in our world and call it a day". There's clearly effort here.

I think most of them look awful. Really don't undestand how people like these while shitting on something like Sonic.
Because like the designs or not, there's clearly an effort to make this a Pokemon world while Sonic is a tired "your favorite character is now in the REAL WORLD" trope.

Some of the designs I don’t like, but overall I’ve loved it. Torterra is just stellar. Don’t like Ludicolo because I always saw his body’s as a different material.

80% of the DP designs work well and look really great. It's almost LOTR like where you can really see how the individual designs fit an overall look within the fantasy world they are supposed to live in.

I can see where people are coming from with the other 20%, but I think in general it works and even those few designs that are misses aren't totally out of place either.

They really did an amazing job making most of the designs work in a real world setting. I love that they kind of just combined the qualities of real world plants/animals with the Pokemon creatures, and somehow it works! Well, most of them anyway

The biggest difference between the designs in DP and Sonic is that in DP, the silhouettes stayed almost exactly the same as they are for the videogame versions, thus making them easily recognizable.

Put a silhouette on the movie version Torterra and I could still tell you it's Torterra.

Put a silhouette on the new Sonic and I couldn't tell you whether it's meant to be a disfigured Sonic character or a new DragonBall character.

I always saw its poncho as a cloth or something. But I'll admit that it being shaggy fur makes waaaay more sense.
I always imagined it more straw like, not hair like. Sucks for me because he is one of my favorite Pokemon and I don't really like him in the movie. But hey thats what happens when the designs have that abstraction.

All the credit in the world to the Detective Pikachu team for making the designs more photo realistic but not losing any of the charm.

That Sonic design is just a straight up abortion and like a text book example of what not to do.

Let me be clear here... They don't look really anymore realistic (as in something I could truly believe were real and could see in the real world) than the cartoony designs. That said, despite my not liking the artstyle, it's important that it's at least consistent which is more than can be said for a lot of CGI. Overall though, I think what makes them work is how brilliantly they are animated. How they move, how they emote, etc THAT is where these designs work.

They don't look like real creatures, but they act and move like what I always imagined Pokemon would. That is what sells me on this and why I'm so excited to see it.

Only thing I dislike about the majority of the Pokemon is that they all look too gritty (besides Pikachu and a few others).

That and sometimes the texture of the scales and skin might feel too thick/pronounced. Like look at Mario's model in Mario Oddessy and the amount of detail in the stitching of his clothes, but he still stays true to his Cartoon design. Some of these designs need that.

Man I dig that design to the right so much, it's all I'd ever want from a live action Sonic movie. Now we just got another meme to put into the huge dumpster like of Sonic memes.

Even if we cant get the Sonic to the right for a movie, can the future games take that style? It looks phenomenal.

Pretty sure there's a reason why Aipom looks creepier than usual due to a plot point from the game.

Some mixed results, but at least they nailed THE mascot of the franchise. Pikachu looks and animates soooo good.

Agree with OP. Part of the joy of this movie is going to see all of the Pokemon done in this style.

I have a prediction that this is going to be a pretty big sensation when it comes out.

They did a really good job!

People online have been correcting the Sonic model and making it look tons better. Currently, it looks like a tossed out Chuck-e-Cheese costume and that's sad!

Yeah, I'm not usually a fan of these fan tweaks for stuff like this for various reasons but this is undeniably better. The original looks like someone in a furry costume. Why go so cartoony and camp with all these other elements of the movie and then try to make the main character as human looking as possible?

They look SO good.

This is what happens when filmmakers actually care about the source material they're adapting. Also, even if Gen 1 is hogging the spotlight for the most part, they even bothered to include quite a few Pokemon from Gen 3 onwards, which makes me so fucking happy.

Personally, I would have been okay with the "edgy" realistic interpretations. But TPC cares a lot about maintaining their image, so Detective Pikachu's redesigns are probably the best they could've been.

I was scared it would be like Pokemon Go in terms of "just yanking game assets and putting them IRL", so I'm glad it's at least higher effort than that.

Super looking forward to the movie!

It helps that the Pokemon are very good designs on the cards and in the anime. So it's easier to translate them to the screen

Torterra is great, like they actually get what the design could be.

The rest, specially that rendered hair on most of them, looks awful. Not that far from that Sonic model. But they'll get a pass because this is pokemon, an IP where fans consume anything regardless of quality.

I wouldn't call the realistic designs edgy so much as I would think that aesthetic wouldn't blend well with the battling aspect of the series. I feel like if they look too much like real creatures that we can relate to, the battling will seem much more cruel, like cockfighting. Having the creatures look more exaggerated, animated and somewhat goofy will lend itself well to seeming less serious when you see them battling. I'm reminded of the animated movie about Trainer Red, where the Squirtle bites the shit out of Charmander and you can hear him screaming in agony for an uncomfortable amount of time.

All that being said, I actually do like the realistic takes. Arvalis is extremely talented, it's awesome to see he was hired on to help with the designs in this movie.

It's pretty telling that no one has been able to make a "fixed" Pikachu, yet that "fixed" Sonic was up within a couple of hours. Pikachu looks amazing.
