It still cracks me up the reason they gave for the game not being on the Wii U
Holy shit, this game was released already? I totally forgot about it, and from the sound of it, so did everyone else.

Unfortunately no. I was really excited for it before it released and I made the mistake of pre-purchasing. Played it for about 2 hours and was not impressed at all
Game Freak said they were working on games that would surpass Pokémon in popularity so they must really want this game to take off
without nintendo, it would probably have died after the first game

i mean, they are for millions of people. and i'm not saying they're amazing games, but GF's last couple of non pokemon games have been kinda drinkers (this, giga wrecker)
There are no non-boss enemies in the game, so it's kind of the point that the battles are very long. But yeah, it sounds like they completely bungled the execution.

They are only tied down to Nintendo exclusivity for Pokemon games
game freak is not a nintendo developer, and they have made several games for non-nintendo platforms in the past.
I mean outside of Drilldozer, Card Jockey, Harmonight and Voltman. But I guess it's cool to hate everything GF does .

I don't think they said anything about popularity. They said they wanted to create something more "exciting" (Source).
Either way Pokemon is their only truly successful venture and it's largely thanks to its great formula, a formula their publisher guided them towards. Their original pitch for Pokemon was not very exciting, to say the least.
They didn't put the Wii u on the pitch because they forgot or whatever.

Sounds like the relationship between the two companies is a bit strained.

whether it is or isn't, that's not a fight Game Freak can win. they might own a third of Pokemon, but Nintendo owns all the trademarks. and GF has nothing else to their name. like it or not, they need Nintendo
Yep and it seems they don't like it, hence strained. But it certainly also seems like they've benefited a lot from Nintendo's help too, so I'm not sure why they're so eager to look for success elsewhere.
Perhaps they're tired of making Pokemon.
Oh God, I did the exact same thing a few minutes ago because I had no idea that used to be on iOS. So yeah... disappointed.
I get why. that's the reason they started putting out more games. but I think their own size (and lack of desire to grow) is putting a damper on their self-publishing ambitions. they simply don't have the bandwidth to do multiple pokemon games, DLC for those games, and their own titles at the size they are
Update for those interested (disclosure: this is my story): NIS America isn't bringing the PS4 version westbound. At least right now.
