Okay just finished the whole series. Overall I would not say I'm in
love with it but I did enjoy it a lot and I will be excited for season 2. It was cool. Every one of the main characters feels like they have something to contribute which is great. The way they maneuvered the plot to get all the right players on the board by the end of the season, insteading of just cramming them all together right at the start, was satisfying. They built a lot of solid tension each episode and by the finale it feels like a hard fought journey on an alien world. Exactly what it should feel like. Dr. Smith is way more fucked up than I expected but that made her pretty interesting. However her plot thread got a little too slow at times like they didnt know what to do with her, not keeping pace with the rest of the writing around her.
I was excited to see the robot beginning to grow more of a personality in the second half but it was only a small taste so I'm not really satisfied with that. Disappointed at the unclaimed potential there. Until they get a dynamic going as satisfying as the original trinity of Will/Smith/Robot, it's
never going to measure up. That's the key trifecta everybody is waiting for and it deflates my balloon to know that I gotta wait for season 2 to possibly see it. When teams make things under the assumption that they're getting a sequel, their attitude often ends up hurting their actual chances of getting one. In this case they're thinking, "No worries, we can get to that in season 2." And yet by neglecting it now, it actually lessens peoples enthusiasm for season 1. Chickens haven't hatched yet, dudes. An entire season without that means you fucked something up.
Soooo not without complaints but overall I had fun and waiting happily for season 2. Mina Sundwall is the highlight of the entire season.
Eagerly awaiting the moment when the robot shows up and announces himself to everyone as
Golden Boy!
...okay maybe not.
