Firstly, opening shortcuts is one of the most important parts of exploring the level. If you find a door or gate that doesn't open from the side you're on, that is a shortcut you should focus on opening up. In the first level, you might be tempted to fight every enemy you come across. Don't. Focus on getting items (the shiny things on the ground) and opening shortcuts. It's okay to run past enemies until you are able to level up, which is not available in the beginning.

Secondly, don't be afraid to be aggressive, but don't be greedy. The game is designed with offense in mind. If you get hit, your health bar will have a little orange bar where your health was depleted. While the bar is still there, you can regain health by attacking an enemy. Most of the time, you can regain most of the life you lost. Also, don't stop swinging once the enemy goes limp. You can still regain life after they die while they fall to the ground. If you play too passively, you won't be able to take advantage of the regain system, and the game will be a lot harder. However, retreating to heal is a good option if you are near death or surrounded by enemies.

Thirdly, don't be afraid to buy blood vials with extra blood echoes before you warp out of the Hunter's Dream. Even if it's just a few, you'll save yourself some grinding in the long run.

Fourth, don't get too discouraged. We all struggled at first, and a hunter is never alone.

4. Instead of directly farming Blood Vials when you run out, it's usually better to farm echoes and use those to buy vials in the Hunter's Dream.
Early on in the game, the set of three brick trolls and two werewolves near the Central Yharnam lamp isn't actually a terrible spot to do both. You can build up a good early collection of echoes while also getting about 10 or so vials a run.
