I've been playing the complete edition for a few weeks now. Initially my goal was to do every quest but each subsequent main quest so that I could 100% the game by the time I finished it, but after 25 hours of playing, I no longer can do it. I'm a few main quests away from completing the game, having just escaped the Sun Pit with that other dude whose name I can't remember.

I didn't initially have the complaints I do now but that's because I expected some things to get better. The game is visually stunning and the foliage, when in the thick of it, can be mesmerizing. Other than that, however, the game is not very fun to experience.

-The transition between gameplay and cut-scene is jarring and unprompted. Unlike other games that require you to be in the vicinity of where a cut-scene takes place before starting it, this game abruptly begins one as soon as you kill the last human or robot required, even if you are meters away.
-Melee combat is extremely clunky. Even if needed as a last resort, I prefer my character just die so I can start anew.
-Voice acting ranges anywhere from mediocre to bad outside of Aloy and the other dude who helps you later in the game.
-Side-quests explore nothing interesting and only serve as fetch-quests that yield nothing of value.
-Never played a game up until this one that had a skill tree with not a single skill I wanted to have.
-Dialogue choices that really feel inconsequential due to the limited number of conversations with them.
-A villain so unimaginative you forget he exists even if you only ever do the main quests and plow through the story.
-The AI is clunky and dumb, not sure how else to put it.

And a few others I can't think of at the moment.

However despite these complaints, the over all biggest pitfall this game has is that it feels incomplete in almost every way outside of its visual presentation. It has a skill tree that feels like it could develop into something more meaningful, but it never quite gets there. It gives the impression of being an ARPG with leveling up, the aforementioned skill tree, and modifying weapons, but none of these things feel like they matter. It has side-quests that feel like they're going to lead to a startling discovery, only to be squandered with insignificance.

And by far the worst feeling I have in a game like this is that after 25 hours my character feels no more empowered now than when I started. I'm happy for those who really enjoy this game because I can see why it is that you do - after all, fighting the robots and dismantling them piece-by-piece can be pretty fun - but this gets old for someone like me very quickly if there's no incentive for continuing to do it outside of harvesting resources.

I'll be finishing the game soon as I have only a few hours left, but I am not looking forward to it. A shame since I went into this game not having read a single impression with the intention of making it my first open-world game I devoted all my time to completing entirely. Now I've discovered even completing the main quests are a chore.

I'm surprised you didn't find a single unlockable ability appealing. I love several of them so damn much.

Sorry you weren't a big fan, OP! You certainly gave it a fair shot. It's my favorite new IP of the generation, but no game is for everyone.

This makes no sense whatsoever. Aloy's abilities improve drastically over the course of the game.

I suppose the game is not for everyone. But I enjoyed it and it's world immensely. It wasn't perfect, but it was fun.

The difficulty curve of this game is pretty great for me. It is very much relying on how you understand the enemies and the type of weapon you use, not the rarity or level of the weapon.
The gameplay is so great and I believe most people don't care to chase weapon with "more damage".

Disagree with nearly every point, and most of all about feeling no more empowered then when you started. By the end of the game I felt like a god and could easily take down big robots with ease even on hard.

Honestly, after finishing it I couldn't understand why it was nominated for the GOTY in 2017 over other games. It's not bad, but Jesus the middle part is boring. The only thing I don't agree with you is the combat, I loved it as long as it was against machones (seriously, human enemies are the worst here. They're just boring).

The DLC is a LOT better though. At least the story and cutscenes aren't like seeing a girl play with Barbies.

I really didn't enjoy the melee combat. Human enemies were terrible to fight and running from one point to another was poor imo.

I did enjoy my time overall with it but I really don't understand the praise it gets.

On paper they improve but it feels no better to play than when she starts. Yes dismantling may come easier and you may be able to notch up to three hours with one of the skills, that much is true. But I articulated that despite all these skills and weapon modifications, they all feel insignificant and leave me feeling no stronger than when I started, even if I am technically stronger by the end.

Honestly you should be able to do away with most machines with melee, at least ones without any long range attack by the 25hr mark, especially if you've been upgrading Aloy's abilities. The beauty of the game is that you don't have to play with any one particular weapon because they are all potent. But hey, everything isn't for everybody.

Yeah, if you are feeling weak it's because you're not exploring the different weapon/ammo types appropriately and learning what is good against what. Some of the fights just felt unfair (in my favor) by the end of the game.

I like the combat using bows. I was only referring to melee combat.

Eh...I disagree. The combat, weapons, and skills were varied and left so much opportunity for doing or trying so many things. Kind of like MGSV where there is tons of variety but you have to actively seek it out and experiment or your not going to get the most out of it.

Only the melee hit and focus slow-motion are actually abilities that make differences. Those stealth abilities could be given at the begin of the game, imo.

This is a complain you can also make against other games which are more suited to stealth based game play, like both Origins and Odyssey. Those games also give you more perks and enhancements to stealth options after unlocking.

Other concerns might be subjective but the skill tree one is weird. The game has all the 'standard' skill tree upgrades you would expect from a game like this.

I strongly disagree with nearly everything you said.

The melee combat is def a little clunky though, and it's a minor part of the combat by design. This game is a third person shooter at its core. Hopefully they expand on the melee in the sequel. Also, human combat is incredibly easy and definitely the weakest part of the game.

That's certainly not how I felt blowing up some of the larger machines in the late game, especially when I started expanding the weapons I was using.

Only time I've ever experienced a skill-tree where I didn't care for a single one. Not exaggerating. I would go over each skill I had yet to unlock with the hope of having misread what they do and each time I said, "wow, I don't care for any particular direction I take my skill tree because none of these interest me."

That's certainly not how I felt blowing up some of the larger machines in the late game, especially when I started expanding the weapons I was using.

Okay, cool, and I've done the same, which means we disagree in how the game feels to each of us. You feel empowered playing it, I feel no different throughout. Maybe I'm not articulating what I mean to say eloquently enough. I'd also say it doesn't have the satisfaction I expect to feel toward the end of the game even as I am taking down larger robots. That visceral empowered feeling is completely absent.

Well if you pound through the game and don't do any of the quests that allow your character to advance. The game is going to get cumbersome.

You didn't want to unlock slow motion when aiming or firing multiple arrows at once in the skill tree? Or even if you are in mid air and you aim down sights the game goes in slow motion.

No, I didn't. Truthfully I always enjoyed these very same skills in other games but this game generates no excitement to unlock the same skills. I can't put my finger on it.

Yes,
I totally don't care about those downsides from the Aloy upgrades.
If all open world games were just stripped off the character upgrade in term of "number going up", Horizon would be the king of how satisfying to play. I know that is a huge assumption and all of heavy rpgs are all about numbers and stats.

This game in term of open world combat encounter is in its own league, imo.

You never discovered the wonders of freeze + 3 precision arrows = 6x the damage. All from the skill tree my friend.

I really liked throwing a sticky bomb on one of the bigger robot enemies and then just before it explodes you go into slow motion. Really cool to see all those different pieces and weapons fall off!

I disagree. Had the coolest story for an open world game. Most openwormd games i just cant get attached to the story cause it goes all over the place. This one had a really cool story and characters. Also, beating those robots was really really fun and they are more versatile then you might think

Not really sure what you're looking for as you're stating it here, I can only say how I felt.

There was IMO a nice sense of escalation going through the game encounters but with Alloy keeping pace. Maybe it's my plac in the skill curve making some encounters risky engagements that I later breezed through. Not sure.

I agree on a lot of points , especially the voice acting. Outside of Aloy and Lance Reddick's character, everybody seems to talk in this weird, sleepy, blissed-out half-whisper. It's like the voice actors were required to shoot up immediately before recording their lines.

My biggest beef with Horizon was how long it took to pick up loot. By the 5th time, I got tired of the item pickup animation. Why cant I just press a button and just pick up loot as I'm running or riding past it? It really messed up my flow.

I started to love shooting 3 arrows together in Ultra hard play-through and Frozen wilds. It is sublime :)
Set up multiple line traps in the same spot. Multiple of those balloon bombs. Proximity grenades etc all in the same area. Lure one of those monsters with the big green sack on their necks.

Oh that said, OP, I actually do disagree with a lot of what you say. While I am not a fan of Horizon much, I think I was a fan of exploring the world because of how well the lore contextualized everything, and because finding things like Cauldrons was always fun. The combat was great, and I think in the end, I felt pretty powerful, because of the various skills I ended up unlocking. I loved how combat encounters felt like Monster Hunter in the game.

That said, I hated the melee combat, hated the dialog tree, the voice acting, the jump cuts, the stilted cutscenes, I hated Aloy flat out not shutting up, hated how limited the mobility in the world felt as well as the sense of invisible walls everywhere, and how irrelevant the game felt as an RPG (it was more action adventure).

Good game, but loads to improve in the sequel.

The lore of the game is what I enjoyed the most. I didn't really care at all about the story with Aloy and the bad guy (forgot his name) but I loved the missions exploring the ruins of humanity and discovering what happened to them.

That was the strategy I used a lot in first play through. :D
The weapon design in the game is so cool. Trip-caster and rope-caster are very innovative.

Some of the worst voice acting in any AAA game.

Almost none of the 'actors' (including Aloy) feel like they really belong in or understand many of the scenes they are in. Their accent, intonation, and emotions conveyed almost never seem correct for the situation. Completely takes me out of the game.

It felt like they just brought in people from around the office to voice the lines.
