Welcome to the Multiverse!

Magic: the Gathering is a Trading Card Game, the first of its kind, developed by Richard Garfield and his playtesters for the gaming company Wizards of the Coast in 1993. The game quickly became a hit, and it is currently bigger than it has ever been. You and your opponents play the role of dueling planeswalkers, wizards able to travel between dimensions known as planes to gather unique magic. Using customized decks made up of your spells, the creatures you can summon, your mana bonds with lands, and even other planeswalkers you can call in to help out, you try to defeat your foes.

For Magic's 25th Anniversary, we return to the world that started it all, Dominaria! Richard Garfield has returned as part of the design team, too! This set is history themed, showcasing major events in the world's past and its many modern legends. In the story, the now buff Jace attempts to meet up with the rest of the Gatewatch on Dominaria, but first they'll have to team up with planeswalkers of old to take down the resurgent Cabal.

Note that the majority of discussion happens on Discord now, but we'll be available for any questions here.

Now... wait, the prerelease date is April 21? This seems early for card reveals.

... Oh, there was a leak. This time, it was Wizards' own fault, accidentally publishing the release notes early. They decided to go with it and release some articles for the set this week. They initially announced plans for Monday and Tuesday, but changed them, and we don't know what they'll do from there.

As such, about 2/3 of the set is out there, albeit without pictures. You can see card mockups here.

Anyway, Dominaria brings about some major changes to how cards are formatted. Let's take this guy as an example.
omjzug2g5krbx3gzarjh.png

  • First of all, note that there's a line separating the rules text and flavor text.
  • Secondly, they have switched from using "he or she" and "his or her" to "they" and "their", which has caused some dumb people to throw fits, as you'd expect.
en_lFPAzZE7YH.png

  • Cards no longer spell out that mana goes to the mana pool. Llanowar Elves' ability now simply reads, "Add G."
en_5rr5fxKPqv.png

  • Legendary cards other than planeswalkers now have design flourishes in the title bar.
en_YrNCWaPq2F.png

  • And the big functional change for last. Planeswalker damage redirection is no longer a thing! This rule said that if you dealt noncombat damage to a player, you could redirect it to a planeswalker they controlled. Instead, over 700 cards have gotten errata to spell out when they can deal damage to planeswalkers. Cards like Lightning Bolt used to read, "Lightning Bolt deals 3 damage to target creature or player," but now read, "Lightning Bolt deals 3 damage to any target." Confusingly, they have printed some new cards in this set that deal damage to target creature or player, and they actually do just deal damage to creatures and players. Here's the full list of how cards have been changed.
    • Abilities that read "target creature or player" have been changed to "any target."
    • Abilities that read "target player" have been changed to "target player or planeswalker." However, if the amount of damage is calculated by using information about that player or objects they control, the ability remains unchanged and can now damage only the player.
    • Abilities that read "target opponent" have been changed to "target opponent or planeswalker" with the same exception listed above. These spells and abilities can target a planeswalker you control.
    • Abilities that deal damage but don't call for a target haven't received errata, with one exception (Vial Smasher the Fierce).
GETTING STARTED
Official guide to starting Magic

To see what a game is like, check out Geek and Sundry's Spellslinger series (now discontinued), where Day[9] battled various geek celebrities, often losing, using simple and easy to follow decks.

Though it's now discontinued in light of the upcoming Magic Arena, Magic Duels is still available to download for a single player Magic experience, and it can help a lot for figuring out the rules.

For the physical card game, there are many ways to get on board. If you go to a local game store (LGS), the owner will give you a simple Welcome Deck for free, after demonstrating how to play the game. Planeswalker Decks are pre-constructed decks with four brand new cards, including unique planeswalker cards, and two additional booster packs, going for an MSRP of $14.99. While not particularly strong, they will allow you to actually play casual games. If you want to build your own deck, a Deckbuilder's Toolkit will give you a decent starting collection of cards for an MSRP of $19.99, including 125 semi-random cards, basic lands, four booster packs, and perhaps most importantly, a good box for your cards. When they are released in April, Challenger Decks will allow you to compete in Standard tournaments for an MSRP of $29.99, and the total card values (before release) are far beyond that.

Game stores will hold Magic Open House events specifically meant for new players, with people there to give you Welcome Decks and play teaching games. Experienced players are also encouraged to participate and help beginners, and everyone will get a promotional card for attending.

The big thing to look forward to, however, is the Prerelease event held for every set. You play in the Sealed format, where every player is given a box with six booster packs and a random additional rare card. From this pool of cards, all of which you keep, each player builds a deck of 40 cards and participates in a Swiss-system tournament. This is a fun and casual event, where everyone is still trying to figure out the set, so don't worry about messing up. In addition to normal duels, there are also Two-Headed Giant events, where you pair up with another player and face off against another team.

Magic Open House events will be on April 14-15, 2018. Prerelease events will be held on April 21-22, 2018. Call your local game store a few days ahead of time to register for the Prerelease, or they might just run out of room. Find local game stores here.

Mechanics

Dominaria has a legendary spell and history theme.

This set is legend... (wait for it)
Legendary Sorcery
en_MGyWRtstQ5.png
en_D68h3RMW52.png
en_Kboi7iP8ek.png
en_NyZ0CO4NxC.png

There are tons of legendary creatures and every booster pack is guaranteed to have at least one. But there are also legendary noncreature permanents, and as a new addition, legendary sorceries. These spells can only be cast if you control a legendary creature or planeswalker--the idea is that they're the ones casting it. Each of these spells reflects a significant moment in Dominaria's history.

en_eRcto9SHj0.png

Saga enchantments tell a story over time, such as the events of the Ice Age. When they enter the battlefield and at the start of your first main phase, you put a lore counter on it, and the chapter ability tied to that number of counters happens. At the end, you sacrifice the enchantment. Historic refers to any Saga, legendary, or artifact card. Artifacts because it's right in the name. Various cards care about historic cards.

And here's the kicker

en_hqqYXC5KfI.png
en_AaJEzwYZJK.png
en_nHAlgk2nWb.png

Kicker returns, appropriate for a set celebrating history. This is by far one of the most versatile mechanics in Magic: if a card has a kicker cost, you can pay that as an additional cost when casting it to get another effect.

Haven't looked at anything about this besides what is in the OP, but so far the set isn't really getting me to want to play. Hope there is something else in there that draws me to it.

Also find it kind of funny that they are going with the theme of the least liked set in Modern magic, Kamigawa.

It would be a pretty good time. They've been making getting into the game easier, and the upcoming Challenger Decks especially will help a lot for getting into the tournament scene.

I was never big on the tournament scene even in my biggest days playing (which were like, mid-90s), but I do kind of miss the social aspect. My only encounters with the game for ages have been the Duels games.

Listen to old Maro podcasts and it was clear he loved the concept of Legendary but hated how its been implemented in Magic forever as essentially only being a drawback mechanic. Kamigawa's legends were a failure because all of them were at rare and you wouldn't even notice it was a theme unless you ripped through an entire box. Now theres 1 per pack and there are reasons to actually want a card to be a legendary.

I dig the set, its like a watered down Time Spiral in terms of mechanic complexity but theres a lot going on with the cards and its still got that nostalgia feel to it. Honestly do wonder how much of this stuff even matters to newer players though

Does this take place in the furthest timeline in Dominaria? I fell off the lore since Apocalypse
This takes place in the present day. Currently, they have a consistent set of main character planeswalkers known as the Gatewatch. A couple sets ago, they got their shit kicked in by Nicol Bolas, and they're in the process of regrouping.

These days the story is an ongoing thing that flows from set to set chronologically. The current story is approximately 60 years after the events of the last time we went to Dominaria (Time Spiral block), which I believe was immediately after Apocalypse.

It's also interesting that all the tribes in Ixalan are represented by at least one card. Don't think the vampires are that interesting for Standard but one of the merfolk is interesting and Territorial Allosaurus seems like it could be more consistent value than something like Ripjaw Raptor.

Stated for the record: I am excited for Dominaria.

The cards look sweet. It's been too long since we've been back there. I have high hopes this set will play well, and I hope some of the cards end up making an eternal splash.

I'm super hyped for Dominaria. Mainly for what looks to be a very fun draft environment. Also really interested in seeing what this new format is. Apparently they have been showing it to store owners here (Seattle) and I have been told it's pretty cool.

My EDH playgroup is super hyped for all the new legendary creatures. Can't wait to make an Aryel knight tribal deck.

From first glance, it's easily the set I like the best in a long time. Need to see the draft in action, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

This feels like a better celebration of Magic than the Masters 25 or Iconic Masters, but that's because I've been playing since the 90s and all of my Magic Nostalgia is rooted in that era. I'm going to be really curious to see how players that started, with, say, Return to Ravnica take to this set

And one of those reasons is Legendary Sorceries, but... that's using Legendary as a much bigger drawback. Seriously not looking forward to staring at the Legendary Sorcery in my hand that's a stone blank until I find a dude to cast it for me.

I'm also not a big fan of a supertype meaning two completely different things, depending on what kind of type it's applied to. Seems clunky.

Which is not to say I'm not in on Day 1, of course. WotC owns me already.

Absolutely love what I've seen so far. I'm a little cold on tribal being a big theme so soon after Ixalan but wizards seems so cool that I'll forgive them.

From my experience, brand new players are psyched about all the cool legendaries. But I have no idea about veteran players who started in the long gap between Time Spiral and Dominaria. I personally started back in Odyssey, but most of my exposure to Magic's story was in retrospect (reading the Artifact cycle and the other books because I was getting into the story with Kamigawa).

Forgot Garfield was on this, makes me excited again. Probably not fair to give him all the credit, but haven't been upset with a set he has been on.

I dunno. I'd like to think they felt the 25 momentum dying and pushed this.

But, it was probably a fuckup.
It was a fuck up. Every time shit leaks the Magic threads go over this and bring up NPH and Judgement god books negatively effecting sales. Don't always agree with their marketing/hype style, but it works for them and it does suck for the players that do want to be surprised and hyped by WotC.

Well if you like the sagas then you can give him credit because that was the mechanic he came up with.

I love 'em conceptually, in terms of flavor. They're also the thing I'm most worried about being a potential misfire in terms of actual format play.

I really need to see a pre-prerelease of this, do they have LRR set for the 14th?

Jesus, a portion of magic's community has to be pretty toxic for singular they to be any sort of issue. Pokemon switched recently and nobody noticed or cared. Looks like the switch happened during the first set of the Sun Moon era which came out a year ago.

It's not catastrophic, they still have plenty of cards left to spoil and personally I'm excited to see what they do with the art.

do they distribute the legendary creatures within a box so that there aren't too many of the same one (for draft purposes)?

don't really want to run too many of the same legend, but need lots of legends so that one of them will stick around long enough to let me cast a legendary sorcery

Granny Chandra? wtf.

I take it not all art is finalized or revealed for this deck yet? I was wondering the other day what the next set would be about and we got this thread, thanks for making it.

Isn't that a different character?

I'm sure there will be enough different legendaries if one is in every pack.

Absolutely love what I've seen so far. I'm a little cold on tribal being a big theme so soon after Ixalan but wizards seems so cool that I'll forgive them.

I don't think the Wizards are as big of a theme as they may appear. As I understand it one of the new general rules is to have all new expansions feature one tribe with some synergies. Tribal blocks like Ixalan do several tribes, but Dominaria's Wizards are more in line with Amonkhet's Zombies: there might be one Wizard deck in a given draft pod, but it's still just a subtheme.

There are sizable knight and goblin themes as well.

Finally UR artifacts gets an EDH commander in Jhoira. I enjoyed her character in the old Urza books, but I never really wanted to build around her old card, because it seemed so obnoxious.
