This is getting closer and closer to a South Korean kind of identification on the Web. Where we have to use our SSN's or Registered Phone Numbers to log-in.

Being anonymous isn't working at all anymore and it leads to more problems than good.

I think you should replace the "(NZ)" in the thread title with "(city in New Zealand)".

Many Americans probably don't know what "NZ" stands for, let alone that Christchurch is a city there. They might just read the thread title and think the shooting happened in a Christian church, not a mosque.
Are you seriously trying to dunk on Americans right now?

The problem with the manifesto is that the media and politicians are completely unequipped to see what's real and what's not. They still have this naivety that everything posted on the Internet is real and sincere.
For all we know, the guy was parodying a left-winger pretending to be alt-right in order to give credence to the inevitable false-flag narrative that will start popping online. Let's not pretend that these white supremacists actually like Candace Owen unironically and take what she says seriously. She's just their useful idiot.

What this says though is that corporations and authorities can no longer pretend that 8chan, The_D, etc. is just inoffensive trolling. Close them all.

At least Swedish media are calling it a terrorist attack, just like it is.

The German mdeia I checked out in the morning did as well.

My main problem was the terror expert who said you can't do anything about people that self radicalize. Which to me is insane. The sites this shit happens on are no secret. Moderate and deplatform. That's how that works.

When I see a story like this, I'm scared to death for my muslim family members who go to Friday prayer every week. Shit like this is how terrorists win. I shouldn't have fear like this, but I can't help it.

And what's worse is that there's no doubt that there are other crazy dudes like the shooter who are just on edge probably ready to snap.

Ah.

Apparently, the fucker seem to have been radicalized in France in 2017, got "desperate" when Macron won over LePen and "cried" when seing the endless white gravestones of the D-Day cemeteries.

WHAT.

THE.

FUCK.

Arresting someone for posting on a site is not that extreme?

Doing absolutely nothing as you propose would be horrific. Or equating doing anything to the shit they do, is just....the fuck duder?

As I stated, these people are happy about terrorism. Stuff like this is what they WANT to have happen. 8chan itself is one of the biggest internet hotbeds for the alt-right. It's where Gamergate was formed and many of their defenses and attack campaigns were thought up. It's where many far-right wing fuckwits meet to determine how to convert people via "innocent memeing". It's literally a haven for child porn. It's etc. etc. etc. etc.
Come on. Something very much should be done about how the right-wing operates online. It's one of the biggest threats to the world at large. It infects politics and inspires people to commit terrorist acts.

Yeah, it's extremely disheartening. One of the boardmembers at our mosque is so scared that she texted me this morning if I knew anyone that can guard the building. Since I used to work security and hospitals around town years ago, she thought I might know security companies. We leave the gates wide open for people to come in...

I mean you would hope that any place of worship would be able to keep it's doors open for people that need it :(

I dunno, 8 Chan isn't just a regular site. While OBVIOUSLY the physical act of posting anything on line should never be illegal...the odds that said content posted on 8Chan would be illegal (child porn, terrorist threats) arent' exactly minute.

Like if I had 'kiddierape.com' filled with solely child porn and someone posted into it many wouldn't have an issue with an investigation happening on said poster. But because a site throws that stuff in there along with JoJo memes, somehow we are just supposed to focus on the JoJo stuff, lol.

Arresting someone is extreme, but if someone was an avid poster on a jihadist recruitment site most wouldn't have a problem...I don't know how suddenly a site that just dabbles on jihadist murder calls but has really good manga images suddenly would get a green light

i get you though, if more people treated each other as human beings we wouldn't be in this mess. Instead we have this stupid "us" vs "them".

You got it. Unfortunately it's the "us" vs "them" narrative that hateful people love to use because they believe it justifies their shittiness and no matter what they're good and others are bad

This should be a government initiative at this point to fund security at Mosques and other religious buildings world wide. Governments allow online platforms to radicalize the youth, promote hate and xenophobia , Islamophobia, etc..I fear is is only the beginning.

I am NOT here to defend the cesspool that is 8chan.

So I won't, this is just a discussion board and people are rightfully heated about this shit, this isn't the legislature where anything of consequence gets done. Y'all do y'all.

Truly sickening. This is the only option at this point. Beef up security at Mosques because its not even safe for people to pray in peace anymore.

I can remember having armed security at every Synagogue I have attended since the 1970s. It's an unfortunate reality of the world we live in.

I think it's my kids being so innocent beside me stirring me up.

Yeah it hits extra hard when you realize this is the world your kids are going to inhabit.

So, to be fair, all the reports I have read have labeled this a terrorist attack, since that is how NZ's prime minister has called it. Any news outlet not calling this terrorism will immediately be added to my black list of news sites.

This is the top of the r/worldnews.

I'm sorry I got a bit blinded by anger. I just hate to see people using this catastrophic event for whatever political gain they seek. Over 40 people died. Over 40 families lost loved ones. Friday in Muslim countries is like a holiday where families gather. I can't imagine. May Allah ease their pain.

I can't speak for everyone else but as a muslim I'm more than fine if white folks just left me the fuck alone. Love? Compassion? Nah I'm good, just leave me be. Sadly even that seems too much to ask for :/

i get you though, if more people treated each other as human beings we wouldn't be in this mess. Instead we have this stupid "us" vs "them".

Honestly this is really what heaven is. Leaving people the fuck alone.

This is a fucking disgrace. 49 people dead, 8chan still up promoting bullshit and no one taking action to put a stop to it.

Religious studies should be fucking mandatory at this point for elementary curriculum and higher. The only way we can even begin to erode the hatred is to educate children on the different beliefs in the world so they can be better than us.

"No one is asking you to like _______, or convert. We're just asking that you understand and respect."

This is the first thing said at all classes at my university for Religious studies.
I went to a Sunday school where we studied about most major Religions. I think it's important as well. It helps children learn to not de-humanize people of other faiths because their other elders/parents feed them some bullshit.

The first order of business is shutting down vile shit like 8chan and 4chan, and calling out anyone who uses those sites. I'd rather we not get any sources of information from there sites posted on this forum. Fuck spreading their bullshit hate.

So you don't get why 8chan in particular is a danger. Nor why far-right wing terrorism is a threat to the world at large. Got it.

Who said all that? You alright?

I said, arresting people for posting on a website is extreme.

Now if you were telling me we should shutdown 8chan I'd be all for that. Don't put words in my mouth just cause you don't have a salient point.

I know it's heated and trust me, I don't wanna be on some 'GOTCHA BITCH, YOUSE A RACIST TERRORIST'.

My bigger point is that it's not binary of where X = Y and there's plenty of grey areas we need to look into. Because I think its getting more and more obvious that the current way we deal things is just exacerbating the problem. While I understand the slippery slope of it all can hurt everyone, it feels we are way to 'everything will sort itself out' about what's bubbling beneath the ground (hell, as a black dude in NYC feels like I get all the negatives of a police state with the NYPD, but none of the positives, lol).

There's gotta be a way to draw the line where freedoms are protected AND its not so easy to use it as a shield for pure evil

just have her call the local cops and they should be able to send a cruiser.

my local mosque has always had a cop parked outside who typically shows up early and helps guide traffic after prayer. i think its a good detterant.

I just... don't wanna get into the nuances of who posts on 8chan and why they choose to do so. That ain't going to do anyone any good rn.

There's ways to deal with the problem of radicalization that aren't "arrest all potential radicals!"

We used to do that, now local PD's saying they can't send out one officer alone, has to be at least two, and no less than 4 hours. And it's just unaffordable right now.

This past week I've been working on a speech in regards to hate speech laws in Sweden. As I was looking up information I couldn't help but think how lax the punishment for it is, and how inconsistent the verdicts are. A politician for the third biggest party in the country wrote a highly Islamophobic post on their facebook page and yet the courts decided it was not hate speech because it was part of a political discussion. How many people have to die because of this bigoted rhetoric before the world realizes that unlimited free speech and the internet are a dangerous combination?
