Not the biggest soccer fan but this seems like a crazy harsh punishment. They must have really fucked up. I assume Pep will be leaving them.

It's a fake ban. Once City appeals it, the ban will get lessened to a fine.

Manchester City banned from Champions League for two seasons

Manchester City have been banned from the Champions League for two seasons, from 2020-21, and fined €30m by Uefa

Manchester City have been banned from the Champions League for the next two seasons by Uefa and fined €30m (£25m) after they were found to have seriously misled European football's governing body and broken financial fair play rules.

City were found guilty by Uefa's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) of having falsely inflated their sponsorship revenues, when they made submissions for the FFP compliance process. The guilty finding follows an investigation sparked by the publication of "leaked" emails and documents by the German magazine Der Spiegel in November 2018.

The "leaked" emails and documents appeared to show that City's owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the Abu Dhabi ruling family, was mostly funding the huge, £67.5m annual sponsorship of the City shirt, stadium and academy by his country's airline, Etihad. One of the leaked emails suggested that only £8m of that sponsorship in 2015-16 was funded directly by Etihad, and the rest was coming from Mansour's own company vehicle for the ownership of City, the Abu Dhabi United Group.

The severity of the ban from both of Uefa's elite club competitions, and the scale of the fine, reflects how seriously Uefa's FFP compliance bodies consider the club to have breached the rules and code of conduct.

Crazy harsh punishment? They broke financial fair play. They sponsor their own training ground, they move money between accounts, they fabricate ticket sales. It's not harsh. Outside of football they are human rights abusers. They shouldn't be involved in football full stop.

It's absolutely fair, given the complete and utter disregard they showed for Financial Fair Play..

I bet they go and win it this season now though, which - subject to the outcome of the inevitable appeal - will lead to loads of tiresome think-pieces about the competition's legitimacy in their absence.

Never expected that to happen.

100% thought UEFA and City would find a way to weasel out again

I didnt mean harsh in comparison to what they deserve. Just saying the penalty in general is. I'm not really familiar enough with the back office of soccer teams to say what they deserve.

Is this a football court? Because if it is then 'Football Court' sounds like a sketch on SNL

That said knowing UEFA I'm guessing "appeal" means "donation of a few million to a certain bank account"

The constant denial and pr put out by the club is typical of a regime which they run. They are used to not answering to anyone, they aren't governed and anytime they are questioned those individuals are silenced and the abu dhabi pr machine goes into over drive. This is sportswashing at the highest level but when something doesn't go their way the mask slips.

Hmm, with the evidence they have about money dumping, they are not in a good spot. Now do PSG. And check Barcelona and Real Madri too.

Meanwhile the Houston Astros literally got caught cheating and they got fined $5 million.

i hope this gets picked up by baseball writers and radio.
