ITT, predict for the NPD March 2019 retail period (March 3-April 6, 2019) for U.S. hardware sales.

What is NPD?: NPD is one of the main retail tracking firms in the U.S., and also about the only one who specifically goes into detail on video games sales. This thread is to predict what the NPD hardware sales will be for the most recent month. NPD months are defined by the National Retail Federation (find calendar links here).
What do I win?: Bragging rights. We also keep track of predictions over the year and have an annual contest using "points." Still just bragging rights, but SalesEra followers have fun seeing how well we can do with it. See here for details on the point calculations.
Why are there still predictions when official NPD numbers are not released?
Trust me said:
To have fun? To share thoughts and speculation with a like mined group of people? To be able to communicate directly with individuals who study this industry for a living?

Since 2010 I guess we don't get official numbers anymore... that doesn't mean we don't get the numbers.

The ranking and results are based in real numbers.

What would be affecting the sales of the other consoles? Maybe he's talking about the digital only Xbox? But he's saying in March and April so idk.

One way to look at it is either tax season affected sales of consoles in general (with slightly cheaper pricing and more economical viability helping lessen market impact of the PS4 more than the Switch), or an underlaying market hype for the Days Gone release where PS4 sales could close the gap while April having no marquee title for the Switch lessens sales after Yoshi.

It really is not worth it, just ignore. Every once in a while my ignore list grows, and that's what it's for, things that annoy you so much that they lessen your enjoyment of reading/participating.

Maybe the same thing that happened in Japan happened in the US - instead of going up vs the previous week, Switch sales actually were the lowest this year the week Yoshi came out. Then again in Japan, even with that, the Switch is still well in the lead in weekly console sales, so this part may be different in the US.

I wouildn't be surprised if things were closer than expected right now. Switch hasn't had a big original release in 4 months and Yoshi isn't exactly a hardware driver. PS4 has had a decent amount this year and Sekiro seemed to have a fair bit of buzz. Thankfully in a few months the train begins to really roll for original software releases on Switch.

Well no, from the looks of it, Switch still easily takes March as well as it did previous months.

It's April that Benji is looking that that could provide a closer margin.

On the March potential slowdown for Switch, seems like other analysts have been predicting slowing sales, too. The new formats are supposed to pick sales back up. Short-term, price cuts are often used, but Nintendo is very hesitant to do that outside of GameCube. With Super Mario Maker 2 in June, Fire Emblem in July, that should help over the Summer. It's probably not so much that PS4 will roar back on top as that Switch may slide back behind it some. *shrugs* Doesn't matter really long-term. Don't have to dominate everyone else for your own system to sell well.

donny2112 in march there were deals on switch games ($30 off on digital games, 1 week) and xbox consoles ($100 off on xbx fallout bundle I think the whole month and $50 off on some xb1 bundles not sure about the period, welfare should know)

...if enthusiasts almost forget about these rumors, why would a majority of the purchasing public consider them all of a sudden into April.
Nah, there is plenty of awareness about new rumored Switch versions even in the public eye - i wouldnt underestimate it.

Nintendo hasnt really changed their core setup of the console in over two years - no aggressive price drops or new version - everyone (retailers, 3rd partys and customers) are expecting a refresh soon.

System is obviously still able to sell enough hardware to top the charts, but its not selling to its fullest potential with the latest rumors predicted new versions by summer.

Hey Benji, are the Call of Duty & Red Dead Ps4 bundles still available? They seem to be sold out online, is it the same in store. Also have you heard anything about a Days Gone Bundle or any other upcoming bundles. Thanks

I would more credit a possible downturn in sales into April from tax season than rumors flying. May would be when those sort of talkings affect customer willingness to put down money now instead of later.

Benji just posted his video:

His main point on Switch: sales late March and early April were down more percentage-wise than PS4/XB1. He gives a good reason for that imo: Mario day promotions ending. If that is indeed the main reason, then I would expect the downward movement to be temporary in response to the end of price reductions.

I think you are underestimating what type of information even casual users have access nowadays. A quick google search or just asking a person with a bit knowledge in your family will likely result in a - wait a couple weeks/months for the revisions to be unveiled. Even last year alot of people stated they were just gonna wait it out for new Switch versions and with every passing month people are going to get more wary about jumping in at this point.

Especially people that already own other systems are more than willing to wait for the revision and are in no rush to get the console. I honestly think the wait till is the only reason why Switch wouldnt be able to be the Top HW seller every month this year.

Notes
In terms of total sales, March is one of the bigger non holiday months of the year, but is also when sales start to slow down as we go into spring and summer. Even with an additional week, total month sales are almost always below February.

Xbox
The Xbox One always has something big in March, be it bundles or price drops (or both). The effect these have can range to pretty good at holding sales or no effect.

2014 had the Titanfall bundle at $499
2015 had the Halo MCC bundle at $349
2016 had the Division 1TB bundle at $399 and a $50 price cut
2017 had the Minecraft bundle at $249 for a week and a free game deal
2018 had the Sea of Thieves bundle at $299, 2 weeks of free games with the One X, and a $50 price cut on the One S

2019 has the continued, fairly drastic, price cut of the Fallout 76 Xbox One X Bundle to $399, two The Division 2 bundles, and a $300 trade in deal to most One X bundles at GameStop

Removing March 2014 as that year was doesn't wholly represent the whole generation, the Xbox One has so far averaged a decrease of -22%, with a minimum of -9% (2017) and a maximum of -34% (2015).

Playstation
PS4 has a pretty clear outlier in 2014 as there were stock shortages for holiday 2013 and early 2014. March 2014 is when PS4 got a hefty supply replenishment this month and was able to get supply over demand.

Besides that, it performs decent in March compared to February. Nothing major besides software releases for PS4 in March and 2019 is no different.

Removing 2014, the PS4 has so far averaged a decrease of -25%, with a minimum of -20% (2017) and a maximum of -35% (2016).

Nintendo
Removing 2015 as that was the launch of the New 3DS XL the 3DS averaged a decrease of -18%, with a minimum of -3% (2013) and a maximum of -32% (2012). With 2015, 3DS averages a -24%

Switch had a great week long sale that bundled a Mario game of your choice for $330. Yoshi is also there, but it should have a similar impact to what Kirby: Star Allies had.

Recap
March is down from February both in weekly sales average and total month sales (almost all of the time).

The biggest March ever recorded back in the 7th gen was the Wii with 721K back in 2008. Second biggest? Wii again with 601K in 2009.

The biggest March ever recorded in the 8th gen is the PS4 with 397K in 2017. Second biggest? PS4 again with 371K in 2014.

Overall switch is likely to be year best seller, but that does not means other consoles wont have the usual spike when a games comes out.

will still be interesting to see how it will pan out as March was the best month last year of the last Quarter for Switch

Looking at the UK for a reference point none of those games were what I'd call "huge". Esp DMC, is there some sort of joke I'm missing out on?

Could be that they outperformed in the US tho of course.

Depends on what you consider huge, but the game sold 2 millions in 2 weeks. That's pretty significant.

Also Benji said he expect the game to have the best launch month sales for a DMC game in NA so that's pretty good and goes against what we saw in other countries (launch week numbers for UK/Japan was like half of DMC4 iirc).

We have digital sales included in US, not in UK. Digital is big nowadays, particularly on online games, but also single player like Sekiro.

Are you sure you want to use the UK as a reference point for a baseball game? Not to mention, character action games have always been far more popular in the US than they are in Europe.

Not surprised Switch sales are slowing. I expect PS4 to lead in both April in May. Nintendo completely dropped the ball during the first half of this year. Fortunately, their late 2018 momentum carried them through the first three months of the year.
