Nice post here...

Thank you again for gathering all of this MetalLord!

I'll add this image of concept art from Nintendo's 2018 employee handbook.

Also bonus 3D World art that I wanted to share!

Nintendo's company handbooks are the best for showing off game concept art.

It's interesting to learn that the Mario franchise is the 5th highest-grossing media franchise, right behind the following: Pokemon, Hello Kitty, Star Wars and Mickey Mouse, assuming that the list is up-to-date. The gap between Mickey Mouse and Mario is also rather substantial, compared to the gap between Mario and the next one on the list, Harry Potter. It's interesting mainly because unlike the other items in the list, Mario is mostly about video games, which goes to show how profitable Mario is on this field. I can see why Nintendo seeks to expand Mario's reach even further, including licensing out for a new animated film. It's so strange that despite Mario's popularity, his online forum presence is way more limited compared to even Pokemon or Sonic.

It had never occurred to me that Nabbit is inspired by the Ninji, if this image is of any indication.

Thank you for reading.

I've got the Encyclopaedia pre-ordered (since March!) and will be crossing my fingers for a translation of the Odyssey book... though I may just import it now.

Have there been any other notable Mario books?
Art books or otherwise?

In terms of encyclopedias there is also 'The Great Character Mario Encyclopedia', Japanese only from 1994.

There's a few art/colouring books from the 90's and 2000's from the US.

Interestingly, the 'Play Nintendo' website from NOA has some nice art/colouring pictures that you can print.

Cool, thanks a lot for the info :)

You know, it's odd that there's such a lack of Mario materials. Zelda has a seemingly endless supply of books, I figured Mario would've been getting at least art books since the Galaxy days.
The games don't even get special editions.
I guess 'it's Mario' and so it doesn't need this stuff, but still...

That Mario and the bird artwork is adorable

I've always loved this art style, I wish we'd get a 2D Mario that looked exactly like this

I believe the Donkey Kong and Wario ones are taken directly from their Super Mario amiibo art.

Meanwhile, many characters have new ones, including Mario, Bowser, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Waluigi, Koopa Troopa, Bowser Jr., Toadette and Kamek. Several are reused artwork.

Thank you for reading.

Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch. First released as an ultra rare 'Crystal Screen' version that had a see-through LCD screen. 1986

8c44ff25aacb0b2215fac67cf0176a78.jpg

Then re-released as a Wide Screen Game & Watch in 1988 with better graphics, same gameplay. (I own this).

MarioGW.png

And an even more limited than the crystal screen version, 1987, only 10,000 units made Japan only, competition winners only (never available at retail).

This is nice. The release of Mario Open Golf (1991) on the Nintendo Online Service reminds us where Mario got his stars & stripes outfit from in Super Mario Odyssey.
