This song gets so much love yet people sleep on Japanese Prince himself Toshiki Kadomatsu
Step Into the Light is legit one of the greatest songs I have ever heard.

This made me happy.
Also an excuse to post one of my favorite covers
Some? She will. She is still active and her albums all did well.God I hate the "short version" bullshit.
Hopefully Mariya Takeuchi gets some money from this, though.
Ohnuki the queen <3In the realm of algorithm friendly 80's jpop, 4AM is still the queen.
Plastic Love is great, but Sparkle has surpassed it for me.
Absolute BOP.
I hope Tokyo Fantasy from Alessandra Mussolini is next
Yep, in the 80's, Benito Mussolini's granddaughter, before starting her own political career in Italy, made a city pop album, singing in japanese. Reality is weirder than fiction.
Japan being Japan with their dumb releases to get people buy the single / DVD.
This guy has the right idea.Telegraph me when we get a music video for 4:00 AM by Ohnuki plz
It's up there. I'm partial to some tracks on the first Moonriders album, Hinotama Boy, because of how they buck City Pop trends while advancing the genre. But the best tracks by Ohnuki, Yamashita, and others are important. This guy has the right idea.
4:00 AM is the secret best City Pop song.
I prefer Big Wave as an album as an interesting hybrid of then current pop sound and the beach boys (one of the songs is a cover, in fact)Plastic Love is great, but Sparkle has surpassed it for me.
Absolute BOP.
My friend informed me that the 'short version' is actually the original version that appears on the album. After listening to the long version for well over a year I now prefer the short version as it sounds like how the song would have been originally composed.
The longer version is fanmade or something.
This the full original version:

Oh sorry, I was referring to another thread about her where I learned that she had other occupations and media appearances before her current one. Didn't mean to derail.
I was expecting more....? Was hoping for references to Bubble Economy Japan, huge phones, cash being waved around everywhere, huge hairstyles etc... I got a slightly better filmed karaoke backing video.
I hate this term. As far as I can tell it was just something someone on 4chan came up with to describe 80s pop from Japan. It feels weird to me to ascribe a subgenre to something that is, well, just Jpop from the 80s. I've never seen anyone actually able to trace it back to anything credible.Tried to get into Citypop after this went viral but it's mostly pretty wack imo, love this song tho
It's one of the few times Youtube algorithms did something good.lol it's a pretty catchy song and I'm still baffled how it became so popular
Mai Yamane is another one of the great artists in the genre though her music tends to be a bit more on the dramatic side:
If her voice sounds familiar to you, it's because she voiced for the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack and made a few tracks including one of my favorites:
That's all for now, don't want to flood the thread with recommendations that most people probably won't appreciate :P
I saw her live with the Seatbelts in Paris in 2003. The Real Folk Blues, Blue, and Rain made everyone cry lol
Best concert memory for me
Aside from being at the right place at the right time, YouTube likes when videos have long watch times. It's a pretty relatively long track. Why does the YT algo love this song so much. I see it so often but have not checked it out yet.
