Prolific filmmaker Martin Scorsese says Marvel movies are "not cinema" and compares superhero fare to theme parks. Speaking to Empire Magazine ahead of the release of Netflix original movie The Irishman, reuniting him with his Goodfellas and Casino stars Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, the Taxi Driver and The Departed director was asked about the proliferation of the superhero genre and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Scorsese then admitted he tried and failed to get into Marvel movies, which he sees as more play pretend than genuine human drama.

"I don't see them. I tried, you know? But that's not cinema," Scorsese told Empire. "Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn't the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being."

So ERA, can MCU movies be considered kino?

Mostly agree. The comparison to a theme park is actually a really good one in my mind.

These movies are fun, but aren't that good.

Well, you can argue about what counts as cinema, but I think he's clearly right that they're not really about genuine human drama or emotional, psychological experiences.

He says they are well made, but they don't convey much in terms of drama and human connection. He is right on that regard, but I think his definition of "cinema" isn't exactly "a motion picture you see in a theatre". He considers them cinema just not cinema.

It isn't true cinema unless it's about a sympathetic old white guy committing violent crimes because we live in a society or something

I like his films but I would never see them in a theater so to me the quote is just ironic.

Let me be the first here to disagree then.

How is he defining cinema here and how are the rest of you doing so because that response does not make sense to me.

Why do people continuously trash these movies

Can't we just fucking watch them and have fun

Artists always have discussion about the medium they chose to perform in. Like, discussing art is almost a bigger part of the whole thing than the art itself.

Yeah, I think debating what is "cinema" is dumb gatekeeping, but I agree with his thoughts of what those movies are. I think people here will be upset that it's specifically about "Marvel" movies, but I honestly think it's not about any specific brand exclusively.

Don't think we need a poll for this one. they absolutely lack the emotional depth and complexity. I felt more watching bicycle thieves then any marvel movie combined.

I agree with this. The discussion about it being cinema is useless. But the points he makes about the movies being dumb and fun but not meaningful is true.

I've been more emotionally invested in MCU movies than any Scorsese movie. Maybe I'm just immature and too into kids stuff. Or this is a lame take from an old guy, who can say.

I have watched all the Marvel movies and enjoyed most of them.

But the gulf between the Marvel movies and something like the new JOKER movie is colossal so he has something of a point even though I think it is unfair to say they aren't cinema.

Good thing he doesn't get to decide what qualifies as "cinema".

Pretty shitty thing to say IMO.

I won't really disagree. I'm not going to say a Marvel film is up there with Citizen Kane or something, despite liking most of them.

They're fantastic popcorn flicks though.

This is like saying Vulfpeck doesnt make music because their songs lack the peaks and valleys that more traditional songcrafting generally has.

Theyre well made and do their own thing. It doesn't diminish the quality of the medium in any regard.

Absolutely true and I agree with him.

He didn't watch them though so in that sense you're 100% better qualified to comment and he has no factual basis upon which to agree with.

I can't stand that. I think it's a fine comparison but if he hasn't bothered to watch them then his opinion is at best a coincidence and at worst disrespectful.
