If people are interested in checking out Mike Carey's awesome run, Marvel just released a Complete Collection a few months ago called X-Men Marauders. Its got probably my all time favorite X-Men roster. After that he started X-Men Legacy, and a fun little Alt U mini event called Age of X.

Praying for an X-Men sale while the CMXU 50% off is still going lol.

This was during the dark ages for me when I stopped reading. I'll catch up with this.

Marvel is doing a cool history of X-Men comics documentary for their youtube:

looks like Hickman is involved too!

Thanks for this! I had no idea where to start with his run. Added it to my wishlist, and will be waiting for some kind of sale.

New Hickman Interview!

He doesn't say much about the books, but I do like his comments on process and he hard confirms the story is not about an alt-universe nor is it time travel.

What's really interesting and relevant though is the preview pages...

POWEROFX2019001-preview-2.jpg

So we have Moira (during what I'm guessing is the 1960s, going by the clothing) reading Tarot cards and then looking pensively at someone (Charles, I would guess.) Ots interesting that a geneticist would be interested in divination, eh?

The two major characters from that first teaser are on the cards, as you see. The lady has a fleur de lis as the symbol on hers, and that can and does represent all kinds of stuff in history/Catholicism. Speaking of flowers...

HOUSEOFX2019001-preview-2.jpg

We see Storm, Colossus, Iceman, and Armor planting/picking what I still think are Stargazer lilies or a fictional version Hickman came up with for this story.

Exciting times!

Ditto to X-Men Marauders. Mike Carey had the second longest consecutive run on the X-books after Claremont and it's gone criminally under appreciated in recent years.

In an interview earlier this week, Hickman gave that run high praise and said it was one of his favorites. Elements of the run like the Children of the Vault, The Corridor, and Angelfire Project that Carey came up with sound like something Hickman is going to echo in a way as he's mentioned things like the Kardashev scale.

Pretty sure that's nightcrawler and not iceman. Look at the fingers, blue pants, and posture. Plus nightcrawler could get to the moon a lot easier then iceman could.

I like how that interview is mostly them trying to get spoilers from Hickman. Those questions are not very good.

Of course he refers to Mike Carey (my favorite writer, check out his Felix Castor novels and The Unwritten, truly awesome stuff), Supernovas was such a great run.

Man my penis can get just so erect, bring me this book already!

Finished Well's New Mutants - what an amazing run.

Going through the first 30 or so issues of David's X-Factor and then will do a quick re-read of Supernovas.

That feels like some substantial x-catch up before Hickman.

Very much interested in this. Hype's rising. This new run will probably be the first time I've read X-Men comics since the 90s. Well, besides some X-Force and Deadpool. Some very interesting concepts in those preview pages, and I love the art.

So I started reading the Mike Carey stuff. At least X-Men Legacy, never read that before.
How is it so far? I know it starts out more focused on Prof. X, but then switches to a team book with Rogue as the leader.

Ive always wanted to read X-Men Legacy, just havent gotten around to it. I did read the crossover that takes place around the middle of Legacy and loved it.

I'm liking it a lot and see why Hickman likes it, lots of secret history/recontexualize the past Along with a healthy dose of Sinister.

It seems like they cancel and re-launch the x-men on a biyearly basis at this point
Now that they own fox (and the movie rights to X-men), I hope that this is the last time- we get "normal" books like Uncanny X-men back, and they let them run for a few years before they decide they need to re-launch everything again
can't they make universes that would last a decade or two?I like planned writingj so if I had to choose I would rather have a reboot once every decade than once every two years.

What do we expect this is? I mean, I guess without captions it's pretty impossible to guess heh, but I had even non-readers reaching out to me (as their resident comic reader) asking me what this is, so I guess people are interested.

We have no idea. Probably something to do with the nature of the x-gene, but even that is a total guess.

I don't have much experience with Hickman. He wrote 3/4s of a really great arc for the Ultimates back when that universe was still a thing, but he got pulled off the book and I never read anything else he did. I've also missed pretty much everything that's happened to the x-men since House of M. I only know that there was some really terrible event with the Inhumans.

Is there any books or storylines that would be considered must reads before this run comes out?

I'm not sure - he says you can go in cold.

Having said that, I am reading books featuring mutants Hickman likes:

Claremont & Wells' New Mutants

David X-Factor

and this will probably follow the threads he laid in Ultimate Fantastic Four, his amazing Fantastic Four/F4 run, Avengers/New Avengers

After so many people recommending this I'm going to get a Marvel Unlimited subscription to check it out, hope it's as good as you all say it is. :)

You're in for an incredible ride, but if I may suggest:

Skip Secret Warriors
Skip SHIELD

Start with Dark Reign: Fantastic Four and move forward from there. F4 through Secret Wars will blow your mind.

Any specific reasons why I should skip them? I figured they are included on the list for a reason?

There is a pretty clear narrative line from F4 -> Secret Wars, with those two being kind of the odd books out. They are non-essential for the larger tale being told.

Moreover, the whole list is a LOT of comics to read. Any chance to trim a bit of the fat off will help you stay on board for reading it all. It's a big undertaking, even without those two books.

Hey, I know it was just recommended that you skip Secret Warriors and SHIELD, but please don't do that. Read them too, in the order they are on the list. You will be extremely happy you did.

Secret Warriors is amazing so I wouldn't skip that at all. If you are going all in on that reading list you might as well read it all. Some of the best Marvel comics ever released.

Really wonder what's going on with the Azazel/Nightcrawler/Gambit and Magik/Colossus/Shadowcat/Moonstar characters. Also I haven't read X-Men comics in ages and all those links on CBR about preceding stories has my head spinning.

Don't listen to this awful take. Secret Warriors and SHIELD are both fantastic. If anything is skippable it's the Ultimate Universe stuff, but even that has some good bits.
